Theatre for Development
Opis:
Rape and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are societal malaises that have bedeviled our local communities especially in Ekiti State, Nigeria, for quite a while. In most parts of Nigeria, while the former is a relatively new evil frowned at and condemned by every sane individual though without any legal action taken against the culprit most times, the latter is an age-long cherished practice actively and openly carried out with the full conviction that it is to the advantage of the girl child. Based on the above, TfD tools were deployed to two communities (Ijurin and Kajola) in Ekiti state, Nigeria, to educate, and re-orientate the people on these issues. At the end of the TfD intervention, rapists realized the legal consequences of their actions and rape victims became fully informed of their legal rights against rapists. In the same vein, supporters and die-hards of female genital mutilation became genuinely convinced of the enormous physical, medical and psychological damage, ignorantly done to the girl child through the act, that is, if it does not lead to death. Also, the people appreciated the fact that rape victims who became pregnant as a result of the act can still realize their dreams if shown love, understanding and encouragement. The research concluded that, with examples of TfD interventions at Ijurin and Kajola, it is obvious that many communities are living in ignorance and are ingrained in archaic and backward traditions that have led to the death of many innocent souls. It is equally ascertained that such obnoxious traditions have negative impact on the lives of the girl child and women. The research therefore recommends the TfD praxis for government, parastatals, and NGOs that are genuinely interested in the expected change and development that is highly needed in the local communities of Africa. A synergy could be created between those bodies and Applied Theatre practitioners to intervene in the desired orientation, conscientization, change and development for the local communities.

This study examined the career considerations in journalism among female mass communication students of Taraba State University. The study adopted the survey research method with questionnaire as the instrument. 125 questionnaires were distributed and 100 were dully filled and retrieved. Data were coded and analyzed with SPSS version 22 and presented in pie charts for clearer understanding. The study is anchored on social cognitive theory. The findings of the study revealed that female mass communication students of Taraba State University have the wish of practicing journalism upon graduation and prefer advertising and news casting against reporting and other forms of journalism. Findings also revealed that gender discrimination is the major factor that dissuades female students from taking up journalism as a career upon graduation. In reversing this trend, the study recommends among other things that institutions of learning should imbibe on female journalism students the need to take up journalism as a career upon graduation. Families, religions, cultures and the society at large should also desist from the discriminating female journalist.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a story where women’s rights have been revoked, and thus women are back in gender roles taken to the extreme, with no rights, no opinions, and no cosmetics or beauty products of any kind. A once independent woman is turned into an object, a ‘vessel’ whose sole purpose is to bear children to save the population. It is a dystopian nightmare which subjugates and subdues women to the point of sexual slavery, language impacts and indoctrinates them in a psychologically-damaging manner, and denies them the basic freedoms which most women in Western civilization take for granted (Porfert 1). The aim of this paper is to arguing the representation of feminist dystopia and the issues related to female predicament, their submissiveness to men in the novels. It will draw a final picture of women’s struggle for freedom. It has been asserted that woman's identity is pushed aside and even erased in the patriarchal social structure of theocratic states.

The majority of female immigrants have children and this paper gives a numerical analysis of the data received from female immigrants from countries of the former USSR in Turkey. The data concerning their children was collected during this research. The sample consisted of more than 400 female immigrants from countries of the former USSR. The data has been analyzed by age, gender, religion, the percentage of children born in Turkey and the different relationships existing between female immigrant mothers and their children.

Opis:
Emotions in humans are subjective conscious experience characterized by psycho-physiological expressions and behavioral reactions. It may act as tool, if positively identified by complementing and enriching job performance but if negatively understood can ruin feelings and be a disaster. Emotions in healthcare organizations are important to be taken care of because in the service exchange process emotions of both the service provider and the receiver are directly involved. Although caring and curing patient by these employees is a professional activity but still, the empathetic and sympathetic behavior shown by these professionals influences their performance and success in hospital industry. Moreover, the behavior shown by these employees in the workplace is often discriminated on the basis of their gender as it influences the performance of health professionals. Based on above backdrop, the objective of the current study is to assess whether there exist difference in emotional intelligence of healthcare employees in hospitals with respect to their gender. A standardized questionnaire was used to conduct the study among 300 employees in hospitals with the help of scale developed by Hyde, Pethe and Dhar (2002). Data was analyzed through SPSS and results indicated that the level of emotional intelligence among females is higher than male employees.

Opis:
Objectification theory, sexual objectification of women, and female self-objectification are new trends in gender studies. When a woman is observed only through her body parts, i.e. as an instrument, she is believed to be sexually objectified. Likewise, when a woman exploits her sexuality, either through wearing revealing clothing or displaying lustful behavior, she is engaged in self-objectification. This paper focuses its attention on the female characters in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire based on the female objectification theory. It examines Blanche’s past and present behavior and argues that Blanche has undergone sexual objectification and consequently self-objectification. She unconsciously suffers from psychological repercussions resulting from her objectification, namely, her drinking problem and her immersion in a false sense of reality. Furthermore, this paper narrows its scope of analysis down to Stanley’s character as an agent of violence and women subordination and examines his relationship with women objectification.

In the present study, reproductive stimuli and fertility effect of raw extract of Clitoria ternatea (RECT) was administered orally at the doses of 250 mg/kg body weight of female rat for a period of 30 days and normal clean water (Normal slain 0.9%, 0.5 ml/kg per day) to control groups. There were no significance changes in the body weight of RECT treated group when compared to control group. RECT treated female rat group vigorously mated with male when allowed on estrus phase of female rat observed in vaginal smears. The serum estradiol level was increased (P < 0.05) significantly. Administered the RECT showed no significant change in the biochemical parameters and hematological parameters of RBC, WBC count when compared to control group. It is concluded that the test of RECT could be due to its reproductive effect in female rat.

Opis:
Maximizing athletic performance often leads to eating disorders. Women are more vulnerable than men. The interaction of three disorders (nutrition, menstruation, bone decalcification) is defined as the triad of female athletes. The cause of menstrual disorders results from too little supply of energy in the diet. Eating disorders also apply to men. RED-S syndrome refers to a physiological disorder caused by a shortage of energy and involves the release of metabolism disorders, menstrual disorders, musculoskeletal system, reduction of the activity of the immune system, the release of protein synthesis, disorders of the nervous system, poorer recovery and cardiovascular disorders. The etiology of the RED-S syndrome is a result of a relatively low availability of energy, as in the triad. Among the causes of these phenomena we can enumerate psychological, biological and social interactions. To assess the condition ,especially in sport, questionnaires are most commonly used and they include questions about height, weight, exercise time, perception, eating disorders and menstrual cycle (women). The nutritional education is very important in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. It suggests the need for an athlete to increase the energy intake and / or decrease exercise expenditure to treat the condition. This paper presents an analysis of the current state of knowledge of the etymology, incidence and effects of eating disorders in athletes based on the available literature.
