Opis:
The phytoplankton abundance and physico-chemical parameters of Ifewara Reservoir, Southwestern Nigeria was studied for four months (February to December, 2015). Four sampling stations (designated Stations 1-4) were established along the horizontal axis of the reservoir - from inflow region to the dam site end. At each station, net plankton samples were collected by sieving 30 litres of water through a plankton net of 50 µm mesh size into 30 ml concentrate volume. These were then preserved in 5% formalin solution and later treated with Lugol’s solution and reduced to 3 ml for microscope observation. The results of the physico-chemical parameters showed that some were above recommended limits of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agencies (NESREA) for drinking water and aquatic life. Sixty-nine (69) species of phytoplankton were recorded from the four investigated sampling stations. The abundance of phytoplankton was in the following order; Bacillariophyceae (90.84%) > Chlorophyceae (44.67%) > Cyanophyceae (10.69%) > Charophyceae (0.31%) > Euglenophyceae (0.12%) > Dinophyceae (0.06%) > Chrysophyceae (0.03%). The most abundant phytoplankton species was Fragilaria aceania, accounting for 74.28% of the total, followed by Cosmarium quadrum (13.04%), Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum (11.97%) and Oscillatoria tenuis (8.03%). With regard to the horizontal pattern of variation along the reservoir, the highest phytoplankton abundance was recorded at the inflow basin and the lowest abundance at the dam site. Almost all the phytoplankton groups also had their highest mean abundance during the rainy season rather then during the dry season.

Opis:
Studies was undertaken to derive information on the abundance, as well as the distribution of African elephants in the Sambisa-Amshaka Game Reserve. For the purposes of the study, the reserve was divided into zones that were then compared. The results reveal that Sambisa-Amshaka Game Reserve holds an ample population of both resident and migratory elephant throughout the year. A total number of 132 elephant groups were sighted during a drive of 29350 m. There is, therefore, a 95% certainty that the true population size lies between 60 and 70 confidence limits, and there is no significant difference P>0.05 between the zones in both elephant composition and distribution. In addition, 190 species woody plants were found browsed by elephant in the study area. Other grasses and forbs were also browsed. The problem facing elephants in the study area includes farming activities during the dry season that block the route the migratory elephants pass through, and also the drying up of rivers. We conclude that if the elephant herd is maintained in the reserve, eco-tourism based on elephant watching will yield economic benefits to the game reserve, the state and the Nation at large. Adequate protection of the elephant species in the reserve is therefore recommended.

Opis:
Butterflies are very sensitive insects for climate change, environmental pollution. Butterflies are model for most of the studies which focus on the effect of climate change on the species richness, change in abundance, species distribution, population size; it is also because of butterflies are umbrella species,. The conservation programme of butterflies will surely help to conserve other species from plants to microscopic organisms. In this study an attempt was made to evaluate the change in butterfly population dynamics through different seasons of the year. According to the observation made during research period it is clear that species richness was the highest from August to November (Monsoon and Early Monsoon) followed by Winter. The lowest were in Hot Summer and Summer that is from February to May. This study is an example for the impact of climate change on the diversity of butterflies from semi-arid geographical region of India; revealed the impact of climate on the species composition, species richness and abundance of butterflies. Such studies are very much important to show that the effects of climate change whether it is natural or human induced change the species composition of species directly and indirectly effecting the ecosystem balance.

Opis:
Marine debris has emerged as a global issue that poses risk to environment systems. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of marine debris in Savu Sea Marine National Park, particularly in Kupang City, Rote Island, and Ndana Island (which are transboundary islands in the Australian and the Indian Ocean). Six beaches were assessed on this study, which comprised of total 12 transects. Debris collected from sampling sites weighed 52.14 kg, with abundance 4.447 ± 1.131 kg/m2 and 215.417 ± 35.609 item/m2. Most debris pieces were accumulated on high tide line and the area that many residents passed through. In terms of type, food wrapper and plastic bag dominated the debris composition due to their occurrence in every transect. It is strongly suggested that beached debris in Kupang and Rote was sourced from the population activities, whereas in Ndana was transported from other places via ocean currents.

Opis:
Sea urchin is one of the key biota of coral reef stability. Research on the abundance and distribution of urchins was carried out from January-August 2019 and field data retrieval occurred in March 2019 on Latondu Island, Taka Bonerate. This study aims to determine the relationship between sea urchin abundance with coral reef conditions and sea urchin distribution patterns in the waters of Latondu Island, Taka Bonerate. Observation of coral reefs and sea urchins was carried out at 3 stations with different criteria of coral reef conditions. Retrieval of coral reef data was done using the Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method, while sea urchin observation came about via a transect belt method. The results showed that in the waters of the island of Latondu, there were 133 sea urchins from 7 species of the Echinoidea class, namely Diadema setosum, Diadema antillarum, Echinometra mathaei, Echinotrix calamaris, Mespillia globulus, Heterocentrotus mammillatus and Echinotrix diadema. The largest abundance of sea urchins was found in Station 3 on the southern part of Latondu Island with 12 ind / 50m2, while Station 1 in the northeast and Station 2 in the northwest part showed 5 ind / 50m2. Sea urchin distribution at Station 1 with a value of 0.79 was uniform, Station 2 with a value of 0.80 was also uniform and Station 3 with a value of 0.91 was uniform as well. The relationship between Sea urchin and coral reef was 0.56, which meant the relationship was moderate and directly proportional.
