Opis:
Introduction. Nematodes of Toxocara genus are common parasites of dogs and cats. These animals are the main source of dangerous zoonoses. The main source of toxocarosis among children are sandpits which are contaminated with dog and cat faeces. We examined the contamination of playgrounds with parasite eggs in Gdańsk city, and frequency of infections of dogs and cats in the area under study. Material and methods. Samples of sand were taken from a surface of sandpits (to depth about 3 cm). All samples were collected in amount of 100 g. Samples of faeces were taken from various places of the playgrounds. Two methods were applied: flotation and decantation by Fülleborn−Willis in modification by Wójcik. Results. Out of 162 sand samples examined 21 (13%) were positive. Out of 54 faeces samples examined 23 (42.6%) were positive. We observed some differences in the degree of parasite species occurrence. The most dominated were Toxocara spp. (6.2% in sand samples and 11% in faeces samples) and Toxascaris leonina (11% in faeces). Eggs of Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma canimum, as well as proglotides of Dipylidium caninum were found sporadically.

Opis:
The main source of many zoonoses is soil contaminated with feline and canine faeces. The aim of this study was to examine the degree of soil contamination with geohelminth eggs in the area of Wrocław. Within 2006–2007 a total of 185 soil samples (parks, backyards, playgrounds and city squares) from area were collected and then examined using flotation technique in saturated sodium nitrate. The helminth eggs were found in 37 (20%) samples. The highest rate of contamination was in the city squares (38.2%). The eggs were also found in 29.1% of backyards. Parks and playgrounds with sandpits were free of any contamination. The prevalence of helminth eggs in positive samples was as follows: Toxocara spp. 3.2%, Uncinaria stenocephala 7.0%, Ancylostoma caninum 4.9% and Trichuris vulpis 4.9%.

Opis:
The aim of the studies was to compare the degree of soil contamination with Toxocara canis and T. cati eggs in rural and urban areas depending on time of sampling and type of places examined. Material and methods. Over 2000−2005 a total of 538 soil samples from 3 villages and 368 from Poznań city (Poland) areas were examined for Toxocara spp. eggs. In spring 418 samples in rural areas and 184 samples in urban areas were collected and in autumn 120 and 184 respectively. The samples were examined using flotation technique in saturated sodium nitrate. The discrimination of T. canis and T. cati eggs was based on the size of eggs and transparency of shell layers. Results. The contamination of soil with Toxocara eggs was higher in the urban areas (19.8% positive samples) than in the rural ones (15.6% positive samples) and city or village−backyards were most heavily contaminated. Both, in the villages and in the city, the degree of soil contamination with eggs in spring and autumn was similar (17.6 and 14.8% positive samples respectively). T. cati eggs were much more prevalent in urban areas (97% of all eggs recovered) while T. canis in rural areas (84% of all recovered eggs). The share of T. canis and T. cati eggs in soil contamination did not depend on the time of sampling.

Opis:
Sand and soil were experimentally contaminated with eggs of Ascaris suum and oncosphercs of Hymenolepis diminuta in three doses: 500, 3000 and 5000 eggs (oncospheres) per 50 g of the ground. Numbers of recovered eggs were compared with the use of the two following methods: the method of flotation and Spindler's method, modified by Vasilkova and Ivančuk. The ground samples were investigated the following day and on the 14th day after the contamination. The samples were stored in 20°C and in 4°C. The Spindler's modified method turned out to be better for the studies of outdoor samples, because it enabled us to detect eggs in slightly infected samples, and in different temperatures.

Opis:
The distribution of geohelminth eggs on the appertment backyards of Wrocław city after flood disaster was studied. Out of 100 soil samples examined 17% were positive. Toxocara spp.eggs were present in 6% samples examined, Aacaris spp. in 2% and other eggs (Capilaria sp. and Trichuris vulpis) in 9% samples examined. Soil contamination of Wrocław area was much less than in other cities of Poland and Europe. The prevalence of geohelminth eggs on flooded areas was very similar to that on the not-flooded areas although the number of eggs recovered was twice as high on flooded areas.
