Opis:
The gravid proglottids of Taenia saginata from human infection before and after treatment of patient with niclosamide (Yomesan) were used for studies on oncosphere envelope ultrastructure. The envelopes examined were intact after drug treatment. The samples from niclosamide-treated and untreated patients were similar with respect to number and kinds of the protective structures surrounding the oncospheres inside gravid proglottids. Their morphology was generally similar to this described earlier for other taeniid species. Details of the ultrastructure of oncospheral envelopes from niclosamide-treated patients are presented in the paper. Contamination of the environment with eggs from treated patients, particularly in poor sanitary conditions, is discussed.

Opis:
Recent epidemiological reports have shown an increasing risk of E. multilocularis infection among red foxes and humans in Poland. The aims of the study were: (1) to improve the early detection of alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in humans by implementation of clinical, imaging, immunodiagnostic, ultrastructural and molecular methods, (ii) to realize the parasitological verification of registered cases suspected of alveococcosis by the specialized, parasitological centres, and (iii) to standardize diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for this severe parasitic disease. Since 1993, eight cases of AE were registered in the Poznań centre. The final diagnosis was based on PAS-positive staining of lesions by histopathology or a detection of the parasite’s DNA in liver sections. Collaboration with physicians of various medical specialities is crucial for an early and more effective recognition of AE. Alveococcosis should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of space-occupying lesions in the liver suggesting slow-growing cancer.

Trichomonas hominis
Opis:
The flagellate Trichomonas hominis is often identified in human diarrheic stools. Because of the fecal-oral transmission rout, infection with 7. hominis is more frequently reported in children than in adults. Although infections with the trichomonads in some world regions are as often as with Giardia, no prevention and optimal treatment are defined. The purpose of our in vitro studies was to examine susceptibility of T. hominis to a newly synthesized imidazole derivative — 1-metylo-2-(2,4-dinitrobenzylotio)-1H-imidazol — P27; in order to make a comparison between this new and previously known compounds, chlorhexidine and metronidazole were used. The protozoans derived from the diarrheic stool of adult patient were grown on the liquid Pahm medium and subcultured twice a week. Assays of trichomonad cultures were incubated with one of the following substances: chlorhexidine, metronidazole or P27. For each compound, two different concentrations were applied. After 24h exposition, an antitrichomonal effect of the above substances was assessed, namely a quantity of the surviving trichomonads was microscopically determined and compared with that observed in control cultures. The protozoans showed different susceptibility, depending on kind and concentration of tested compound. In comparison to the control cultures, the reduction in number of surviving protozoans appeared in the assays with metronidazole, chlorhexidine and P27 (to 63%, 52% and 8.7%, respectively). The highest in vitro susceptibility of 7. hominis was revealed to a new imidazole derivative P27. The obtained results allow us to suppose that the further studies in this field will be very helpful for explaining the mechanisms of the antitrichomonal activity of the tested compounds as well as for assessment of the influence of various abiotic factors.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to examine oral cavity condition, identify microorganisms and evaluate interrelation between protozoans, bacteria and fungi occurring in mouths of insuline treated diabetics. 30 men and women, 25-60 years old, were clinically assessed for their oral cavity condition including pH range. Fifteen of them were the insuline treated diabetics. Swabs taken of different sites of periodontium, dental plaques and dental pockets collected from each patients were used for detection and identification of protozoans, bacteria and fungi. Mucosal inflammation, dental caries, loose teeth, periodontitis were observed in the diabetic patients, whereas the oral cavities were generally in better condition in the control patients. Prevalence of the protozoan parasites Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax was higher in the control patients than in the diabetics (26.6% and 13.3%, respectively). Fecal bacteria Enterococcus fecalis, E. faecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae occurred with significantly higher frequency in the insuline treated patients (60%) than in the control (6.6%). Various Candida albicans strains were more often found in the diabetic (53.2%) than in the control patients (13.3%). The results of our studies show a clear interrelation between alteration of oral health and the occurrence of microorganisms in the insuline treated diabetics. Metabolic disease that causes serious multi-organ disturbances as well as insulinotherapy are the very important factors changing oral cavity ecology of the persons with diabetes mellitus; decresed pH (the average 5.5) may inhibit development of infection with protozoans in the oral cavity of these patients and favour subclinical infections with other microorganisms. Thus, in the insuline treated diabetics, examination of mouths with regard to the occurrence of opportunistic fecal bacteria and fungi, particularly before a therapy with antibiotics is strongly recommended.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to study clinical changes and microorganisms in mouths of three patient groups: with congenital disorders (Cd), dialyzed (D) and control (C). Fifty five patients, 20 to 62 years old were assessed. Swabs and samples of periodontal tissue were used for microscopical study to detect of protozoans and for bacterial and fungal cultures. E. Gingivalis and T. tenax were found in all groups. Three out of Cd patients were infected with Acanthamoeba sp. Fecal bacteria were more often found in D than Cd. In all 30-40 years old D patients, fecal bacteria and various strains of C. albicans occurred. We found that systemie diseases favour instabilities in mouths changing interrelations between protozoa, bacteria and fungi. It may increase risk of clinical complications.
