Opis:
Theology of penance, the deed, was shaped by theologians and legislation, which mainly, in the first epoch, led to punishment. The nature of foreseen reward was (relatively) exactly defined by the quantity and quality. Obligatory resolutions where defined to current law and community, therefore undertaken resolutions were not necessarily in the scope of defined requirements, that is why, in general, rarely obligated the church. Resolutions of two synods taken place in Elwir and Ancyr, introduced in the first part of the article, deemed to have the most severe requirements, without references from synods from other provinces. The second part of the article shows decisions, undertaken by synods in concrete uses, in chosen fields of life and individual states. Over the centuries, formulated sanctions, as an example, showed a progressive appeasement of penitential achievement, even if such process was not at a uniform rate.

Opis:
Pilgriming is generally understood as a kind of motivational, religious mowing to “saint places” revived by the atonement intention (to rarely thankful) for God given goodness, which is subjectively believed to be meaningful. In thereby interpretation, only visible aspect comes to the foreground, without getting into its theological proof. In hereby elaboration, however, the topic of theological issue is touched upon, not in a sense of a detailed meaning of the notion, but by showing the historical determinations conditioning the way of understanding the notion. In Christian bastion of the discussed phenomenon is the Middle East, from where the solutions have been transferred to the West, in somewhat different categories. The transfer, both in theory and in practice, could be possible only due to people’s engagement, who were fascinated with the eastern spirituality. Some of the famous names, who could be distinguished are Jerome, John Cassian or Melania the Elder, the most active figures. The idea of pilgrimage transferred to the west, hasn’t been, clearly, intact in its form, but exposed to, based on different local accents, evolutionary changes. It is shown in interpretation changes applied, in reference to the notion of peregrinatio, inland and in the British Isles.

Opis:
Homilia Anastazego Synaity na temat Psalmu VI utrzymana jest w konwencji pedagogiki chrześcijańskiej. Kaznodzieja przypomina słuchaczom o grzechu, zachęca do nawrócenia. Temu procesowi towarzyszy świadoma praca nad wadami, często łzy żalu oraz poprawa życia i naprawa zerwanych relacji z Bogiem i ludźmi. Owocem tak rozumianego wysiłku duchowego jest całkowite nawrócenie grzesznika, odpuszczenie grzechów i przygotowanie do śmierci, która jest nieuchronnym etapem ku życiu wiecznemu.
Anastasius of Synai's homily on Psalm VI is maintained in the convention of Christian pedagogy. The preacher reminds his listeners of sin, encourages them to repent. This process is accompanied by conscious work on flaws, often tears of regret and improvement of life and repair of broken relationships with God and people. The fruit of spiritual effort understood in this way is the complete conversion of the sinner, forgiveness of sins and preparation for death, which is an inevitable stage towards eternal life.

Opis:
The article discusses the most important premises which deal with Christian penance from the VI to the XI century. The main sources for the above article are the Penitential Books (Libri Poenitentiales), published as part of the series of Źródła Myśli Teologicznej (ŻMT 58), collected and edited by A. Baron and H. Pietras in 2011. The article consists of three parts. The first part examines the meaning of penance in the life of Christians as a medicine for sin which is an illness of the soul and the body. The second part presents the teaching of penitentials on the twelve ways of absolving from sins. The third part provides practical suggestions for confessors and penitents. The Penitential Books, as a witness to the development of penitential practices, confirm the role of individual spiritual therapy in the life of the Christian. This process of regaining of one’s spiritual health takes place, on one hand, through the grace of God’s Mercy, and, on the other hand, through penitential practices whose aim was internal conversion and outward change in one’s way of life.

Opis:
St. Ambrose’s letters are a unique example of bishop’s concern for pastoral, social and political issues relating to the city, the diocese, the Empire and the Church. They have been a special way of his pastoral influence and work. He included in them a number of moral, legal and dogmatic instructions, among which he described a model of the Christian sage. It was based on the statements of the Stoic philosophy, but finally the Christian character arising from Scripture, and especially from the teaching of St. Paul the Apostle, was added to Ambrose’s model of a sage. According to Ambrose, the basic feature of the sage is freedom, but it also provides a number of other features – such as submission to God, love for the neighbours, the spirit of repentance, knowledge of God’s Law – which constitute the perfect sage, and ultimately – the perfect Christian.

Opis:
In his Letter to Decentius, Bishop of Gubbio, Pope Innocent I discusses some liturgical questions and specifies the competences of the representatives of the clergy of the time in this regard. First of all, however, he demonstrates the particular link of the community of Rome with the figure of St Peter, which gives rise to the very special role of the Bishop of Rome in relation to other communities, especially in the West. He then concentrates especially on the duties and rights of bishops (episcopi), the principal shepherds and administrators of the divine gifts; on the basis of Sacred Scripture and Tradition he places them at the head of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Presbyters (presbyteri) are then considered; to them the author of the Letter attributes a significant role especially in teaching and in the celebration of the Eucharist and Baptism. Confirmation is celebrated by the bishop; presbyters, even though they are priests (sacerdotes), do not possess the fullness of the priesthood. The term sacerdos is usually used in reference to bishops and presbyters; however, at times it is reserved to bishops, as, for example, in the discussion on the theme of the beginning of public penance and the admission of the repentant Christian to the community on Holy Thursday.
