Opis:
Theology of penance, the deed, was shaped by theologians and legislation, which mainly, in the first epoch, led to punishment. The nature of foreseen reward was (relatively) exactly defined by the quantity and quality. Obligatory resolutions where defined to current law and community, therefore undertaken resolutions were not necessarily in the scope of defined requirements, that is why, in general, rarely obligated the church. Resolutions of two synods taken place in Elwir and Ancyr, introduced in the first part of the article, deemed to have the most severe requirements, without references from synods from other provinces. The second part of the article shows decisions, undertaken by synods in concrete uses, in chosen fields of life and individual states. Over the centuries, formulated sanctions, as an example, showed a progressive appeasement of penitential achievement, even if such process was not at a uniform rate.

Opis:
The paper relates to the information contained in the Early Christian inscriptions from Rome (IC V R v. 1 - 1 0 ), from the fourth to sixth century, concerning boys below 8 years of age and referred to in the epitaphs by the term puer. The age was selected so that the information concerned children and not teenagers when the overtone of such expression could have sexual connotations. There are only 38 such epitaphs for 1962 children in the above mentioned age (1.9% ). More than a half of them (20) are very modest containing only name, age and sometimes the simplest epithet and motto (bm, in pace). The rest however include the information typical of other children’s epitaphs, posthumous descriptions, baptism details and allusions to the social background. The founders of the tomb stones are parents (10) and then the term puer is additional, even tender but also anonymous people (28) when the term could signify a slave (only one sure case) or a foster child, a boy who knew the faith (puer in fide). In my opinion they must have been orphans brought up by the community, sometimes assigned to serve in the Church (especially boys called puer nomine X ).

Opis:
The subject of this article deals with Persian Christians in the period of the persecution of Shapur II. The ruler derived from the Sassanid dynasty had governed the Persian Empire since 309 to 379 and on that time of his reign Sassanid Empire saw its first golden era. The three source accounts were analysed: Demonstrations of Aphrahat, The History of the Hermias Sozomenus and Chronica Seertensis – nestorianical source dated from the IX or X century. Each of analysed reports concerning the persecution of the Persian Christians appears to be interesting and noteworthy. In his Church History Hermias accepted the role of external factors in origin and turn of events of Church persecution in Persia in the IV century (magicians and Jews). Nestorian author of Chronica Seertensis has also made observations of these groups in forming the antichristian politics of the Persian ruler but besides that he even expands theological reflection: the persecution should be interpreted as the time of trial, strengthening the faith and calling on to convert. The Aphrahat in his Demonstrations, particularly in his Synodical Letter had briefed the similar historical-redemptive conception in the martyr theology but judging the posture of Simeon negatively.

Opis:
The article shows the model of the perfect Christian depicted by the Bishop of Carthage, St. Cyprian. This model is particularly interesting since it was formed during the persecution, which had a major impact on shaping the image of the perfect Christian. This paper consists of three main parts: the first - St. bishop Cyprian of Carthage and his time – in which the circumstances of his pastoral work and his works are given, the other - Perfection for all - shows a model of perfection that St. Cyprian proposed to all believers, and in the third part, the martyrs - „a fruit a hundredfold” of perfection - are portrayed. To them Cyprian admitted the highest degree of Christian perfection. For bishop Cyprian the Christian-martyrs, who perfectly fulfilled God’s commandments in everyday life and in the most perfect way they united themself with Christ in the suffering and in the death, were primarily a perfect model of the Christians. And this model of perfect Christianmartyr for decades after Cyprian - till the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great - was the main model of a perfect Christian.

Early Christian attitude to the spectacles
ancient public spectacles
early Christian alternative spectacles
Opis:
The Church Fathers presented a decidedly negative stance toward all public spectacles of their time, which they generally accused of being immoral and idolatrous in nature. For this reason, the ancient Church, although it has inherited many spectacular elements (especially in the area of liturgy – processions and acclamations, among others; and in the sphere of the language – many terms, expressions and comparisons), has never created its own drama. Many authors of that time, especially those concerned with pastoral implications, noticed that this definitely negative attitude was failing in practice, because many Christians, even though they had renounced the spectacular splendor of the devil at baptism, often attended spectacles, because it was very difficult to eradicate their desire to watch performances, which they treated as a public pleasure they are entitled to (voluptates). In response to this situation, many early Christian writers renounced efforts to uproot people’s desire for viewing pleasure, and proposed to change the subject being viewed. Instead of harmful public spectacles, they suggested watching Christian substitute performances, which included beautiful scenery of nature (as was already suggested by some stoics), but most often more expressive biblical scenes or events. The author of the article selects and presents five early Christian writers – Tertullian, Novatian, St. John Chrysostom, St. Augustine and Quodvultdeus, who openly wrote about such substitute Christian performances.

Opis:
Isidore of Seville (560-636) is rightly considered to be one of the most important teachers of the medieval Europe. He wrote numerous didactic works on catholic doctrine, biblical exegesis, history, grammar, natural sciences etc. Isidore was neither a scientist nor an independent thinker, but indeed he was a genius of compilation. He spent his youth in the famous library of the bishops of Seville, where he stored knowledge by studying Holy Scriptures and works of classic and Christian authors. This library was destroyed, but we could strive to recreate its catalogue reading the books written by Isidore. In his Versus in bibliotheca Isidore tells us about authors he knew. We find among them Christian poets – Prudentius, Iuvencus, Sedulius, Avitus Viennensis. In Etymologiae Isidore presents to the reader Dracontius, and in De viris illustribus he admires talents of the centonist Proba. Isidore’s knowledge of Christian epics and the high regard he had for them tell us a lot not only about literary tastes of the well-educated bishop, but about the culture of reading of inhabitants of Visigothic Spain in the seventh century as well.

The article is a summary of Christian itineraria, documents and letters from a trip to the Holy Land; from Meliton of Sardis letter’s in the second century, to description of the holy places in Greek Epiphanius of Jerusalem in the eighth century. The author touches the theme of evolution in the approach to the pilgrimage over seven centuries. At the beginning the journey to Jerusalem was sightseeing, historical and descriptive. From the fourth century, pilgrimage becomes the religious and spiritual journey. In the sixth century it is great phenomenon of religion (the cult of the Holy Wood of the Cross, the cult of relics, eulogia) but also political. From the beginning was associated with the ascetic and monastic ideals. Due to the invasion of Islam in the seventh and eighth centuries, itineraria were mostly copies of previous or notation of experiences of other people.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to arouse a discussion about the originality of the design of Roman Christian basilica. The author deals with the form of basilica Constantiniana and strives to reconstruct its architectonic and functional programme. Formal borrowings from forum basilicas and imperial audience halls have been indicated. The formal adoption from those objects has been justified in two ways. The idea of acquiring the scale and inside arrangement from forum basilicas stemmed from the similarity of function. In turn, hierarchical order of the interior was achieved due to an apse moved to the shorter side with the entrances on the opposite one; such a compositional solution was taken from imperial basilicas. It was aimed to focus an attention of the faithful at actions which were taking place against the apse as well as at the bishop himself. The apse’s symbolic significance raised the rank of a building, thus granting a bishop the emperor’s authority. The development of Roman Christian basilica – understood as such process – turned this object into original architectonic creation. It joined ingeniously the function of gathering the faithful (procedure unknown to the prior Roman cult architecture) with the visualisation of the symbolism of power – of a bishop, in this case – emanating from the form of the apse and from the structure of the building, both derived from imperial basilicas.

Since the discovery of the substantial corpus of Manichaean writings, especially the Kephalaia (editio princeps Polotsky-Böhlig, 1934-1940), the Cologne Mani Codex (= CMC), and the hitherto incompletely published library from Dachla (Ian Gardner, 2000), there can be no doubt as to the activities of the missionaries of the great Persian gnostic Mani in the Southern Nile Valley and Red Sea regions. This fact not only confirms the views of J. Helderman “that the Manichaean missionaries entered Egypt from the South-East, i.e. initially to Upper Egypt” (‘Manichäische Züge im Thomasevangelium’, 483f., note 42), but also the historical observations concerning the origins and development of monasticism. The latter was not without Manichaean influence, not merely in Egypt, but also in Nubia and Ethiopia. A mosaic, seemingly depicting Mani (from the collection of Elie Borowski), testifies to the pictorial needs of the Manichaeans as do the mural paintings from Pachoras/Faras depicting the likeness of Onophrios. These demonstrate the popularity of the crinite ascetic”, a figure also found in the CMC. It is imperative to recall the decisive importance of the southern kingdoms along the Red Sea during the Axial Age (Karl Jaspers), in order to kindle historical awareness in Europe of this currently overlooked region on the eve of its islamicisation – something which for decades I have noted the importance of in numerous publications (cf. foot-note 40). Here, local Christianity (viewed anachronistically) was marked by a heretical-gnostic diversity from the very beginning, which in turn weakened the spread of Christian teaching in the region. Islam was initially seen here by some as a Christian heresy (as pointed out by A. v. Harnack) and which even became accepted (e.g. in Ethiopia or Nubia, as noted by H. Jansen, Muhammed [German ed.: Münich 2008], 141). Thus, the local doctrinal pluriformity of Christianity during the jāhiliyya prepared the way for the later Islamic expansion. Manichaeism belongs unequivocally to the “periphery cultures of the Christian world” (Pogranicza chrześcijaństwa) as well as constituting a part of expanding Christianity in the Late Antique world. Manichaeism still holds many secrets, but at the same time their answers, as illustrated by this article. Hence, the gnostic element of Early Christianity is worthy of continued intensive study, something which unfortunately in Poland is still quite inadequate.
