    The author presents two directions of interpreting the Biblical relations of miracles which are represented by great figures of the past, namely St. Augustin and St. Thomas, as well as two directions which clearly marked their existence in our contemporary times. These are the interpretation based on depth psychology (Drewermann) and the interpretation of miracles as images and signs of hope (Theissen, Langner, Metz).

    Opis:
    Sulpicius Severus (c. 360-420) was interested in various cases of human death. Although he do not deny that Christ is the one who alone can save man from death, he does not emphasize this truth either. He is mainly interested in wonders, extraordinary events linked mostly with St. Martin of Tours who was his friend. These miracles performed by Martin had their source in God’s power, but the way they are described places Martin in the centre and presents him as the main character. In this way, Sulpicius brings in a new style of writing, hagiographic literature where though God is the most important, the reader gets the impression that the central figure is a saint. Even though miracles happen by the power of God, one gets the impression that they are the result of the holy man’s efforts and merits. Sulpicius Severus considers death, caused by various ways and experienced for different reasons, is the greatest misfortune of man. He describes many examples related to the phenomenon of death. He talks about the death penalty. Although he mentions death as turning away from God, he does not mean eternal death, but rather its temporal consequences such as deprivation of freedom and falling into a state of slavery.

    Tekst biblijny niewątpliwie ukształtował treść kazań Piotra Chryzologa. Wygłaszał on homilie także o Ewangelii św. Łukasza. Refleksja na temat uzdrowienia człowieka chorego na wodną puchlinę (Łk 14,2-4) pojawia się w Sermo 99 bis. Kazanie ma wydźwięk polemiczny, lecz dotyczy sytuacji opisanej w tekście ewangelicznym. Jest dopracowane pod względem oratorskim i teologicznym. Chryzolog podkreślał moralne i symboliczne znaczenie choroby. Mówca zastosował odpowiednie środki, by wywołać właściwą reakcję słuchaczy i przekazać naukę moralno-duchową. Jego homilia, podobnie jak inne mowy, obfitowały w figury stylistyczne i realistyczne porównania.
    The biblical texts indubitably shaped the content of the sermons of Peter Chrysologus. He delivered sermons on the Gospel of St. Luke. The lecture on the healing of the man with dropsy (Luke 14:2-4) appears in Sermo 99 bis. The homily has a polemical resonance, but it concerns the situation described in the evangelic text. It is elaborated under a rhetorical and theological aspect. The bishop of Ravenna emphasized the symbolic and moral value of illness. The preacher used the appropriate means to arouse the desired response from the audience and to transmit the spiritual and moral teaching. The homily in question, like other speeches, abandoned rhetorical figures and realistic comparisons.
