St. Augustine did not write any text dedicated to the ceremony of confirmation. Nevertheless, in the Bishop of Hippo’s texts, it is possible to find some loose statements or allusions to that ceremony. There appeared mainly the terminology which was used to present the activities related to that sacrament dispensing. This article attempts to collect these statements, and basing on that, to reconstruct the ceremony itself and also its interpretation made by St. Augustine. The collected materials allow to make cautious conclusions. There is no doubt that confirmation was applied in the Hippo Church. However, it appears that St. Augustine’s cautiousness in confirmation-related statements was result of the disciplina arcani practice. Referring to that sacrament, he emphasised the presentation of the theological contents instead of the ceremony itself.

The biblical story of creation, and subsequently the sin of Eve, was frequently analized by many Church Fathers. These analysis conclusions were ones of the crucial elements which shaped the vision of woman in the Early Christian times. St. Augustine was within this trend. He analized and referred to the Genesis’ texts related to Eve in the numerous of his works. He read this story either literally or alegorically. From the biblical texts which were interpreted literally, he derived his view about human sexuality and its purposefulness. He also eagerly emphasized the issue of woman’s nature. Indeed, he acknowledged that Eve was equal to Adam as human, as well as woman was equal to male at all. Nevertheless, he was sure of woman’s nature weakness and affirmed her dependence on male in the social life. St. Augustine used the alegorical interpretation conclusions to explain the relationship between the body and spirit within a man. In this perspective, the woman’s position is especially weak because, as a representant of body, she should be totally dependent on male who symbolizes the spiritual sphere within a man. The article only fragmentalically presents the St. Augusine’s view on the woman question because it is limited only to the conclusions of one biblical text exegesis.

The Constantine breakthrough was the beginning of changes in the whole Roman Empire state system. In Roman Law that process meant the introduction of Christian elements into legislation. The process of Roman Law Christianization was started by the Emperor Constantine the Great and was proceeded by his successors. The scope of those changes is difficult to determine. It is even more difficult to determine those changes mechanism of introduction. It is sure that Church was not the initiator of them. Even priests not always had been satisfied with those changes. Simplifying, those changes could be reduced to three areas: law and rules regarding the Christian cult; respecting the Christian spirit laws, and, finally, to, so called, privileges which were bestowed to the Catholic Church. It seems to be that this process did not open the way to introduction of confessional state but strengthened its tolerant – in religious case – character. This article is a systematization attempt of these issues, especially in the face of the numerous appearing allegations.

Explanation of Creed, known also as Symbolum, was an essential part of ca-techumen’s preparing for baptism in the ancient Church. Catechesis in the last weeks of the Lent were dedicated to that question. These catechesis were related to the solemn rites of traditio Symboli and redditio Symboli. Catechumens were obliged to remember Symbol but they could have neither put it down nor discussed it, nor even recited it. Some bishops forbade even to discuss about the catechesis. Catechumens were very often reminded to keep the secret, and this question was emphasized. In this article the duty of keeping the secret is analyzed in the context of disciplina aracni which was practiced in catechesis of 4th and 5th century.

The theme of old age is presented only occasionally by Latin authors who wrote their works in Gallia in the 5th and 6th centuries after Christ. The term „old man” is first and foremost a man of advanced age. Nowhere, however, a limit of old age is defined. Usually one can find a reference to a man still vital, though bearing the hallmarks of loss of strength and fitness. Old age is sometimes linked up with infirmity. Nowhere, however, one talks about any special care that these old people or the old with symptoms of old age need. In a positive sense old age means a person who has experience and authority. People of the Church who enjoy respect are often described in this way. Reaching old age understood in this sense was seen as an expression of God`s blessing.

Nelle catechesi di Giovanni Crisostomo viene usato il concetto delle „nozze spirituali” per approfondire il tema del battesimo. Alcuni particolari delle nozze scelti da Crisostomo gli servono a far vedere i diversi aspetti del mistero battesimale. In modo particolare nei catechesi viene sviluppata la relazione tra lo sposo e la sposa che nella visione di Cristosomo diventa l’imagine del Cristo e l’anima umana. Molto interessante è il modo in cui l’autore delle catechesi tratta i costumi nuziali. Di solito Crisostomo biasima questi costumi, ma mostrando le „nozze spirituali” si ferma sugli aspetti positivi. Parlando del senso figurativo delle nozze Crisostomo ci permette di conoscere diversi costumi nuziali del suo tempo. Il presbitero d’Antiochia dimostra assai grande conoscenza della materia. Dopo la lectura delle catechesi battesimali nasce la domanda perché Crisostomo presenta il battesimo come le „nozze spirituali”. Ma una risposta soddisfacente finora non troviamo.

Nel Particolo vengono indicati alcuni comportamenti eucharistici (per es. digiuno eucharistico) ed interes- santi aspetti del Pinsegnamento dei Padri della Chiesa riguardanti la Comunione (Pobligo della santita personale, il dovere della penitenza, ecc).

Preparation for participating in the Eucharist took place in the fourth and fifth centuries as part of pre-baptismal catechesis, and to a more degree as part of mystagogical catechesis which took place after baptism. A few of such catecheses have been preserved after saint Augustine. He preached them at Easter. In these catecheses he tried to make neophytes aware of the real presence of Christ in Bread and Wine. He justified it using biblical texts especially Christ’s statements about „the living bread”. The main task and duty of Christians was to wake up in the faith and receive the Eucharist worthily.

Dalla storia ci sono noti assai bene le prominenti figure della Galia tardoantica (IV-V secolo d.C.): Paolino di Nola, Sulplicio Severo, Eucherio di Lione, Salviano di Marsiglia, ecc. Tutti quanti appartenenti alla classe della nobiltà d’allora, ben educati, sposati, in un certo momento della loro vita hanno abbandonato vita monadana e si sono dedicati all’ascezi ed agli ideali monastici. Si parla della „seconda conversione” dopo il battesimo. Nell’articolo viene presentato il fenomeno e si domanda sulla sua natura. Un’analisi dei casi esaminati ci peremette a dare i conclusioni. Anzitutto posiamo dire di un crescente desiderio della vita più vicina a Dio nel mondo già cristianisato ma poco esigente.
