Opis:
Jurassic rocks in the central Tulsequah map area include conglomerates and interbedded fossiliferous finer clastics of the Takwahoni Formation (Laberge Group) which unconformably overlie Triassic rocks. Ammonite collections document the Pliensbachian, Toarcian and Bajocian stages. We refine the age and provenance of episodes of coarse clastic input and confirm the progressive change of dominant clast lithology from reworked sedimentary rocks above the Triassic-Jurassic unconformity to volcanic, plutonic and then metamorphic clasts in the Upper Toarcian. The uppermost coarse clastic unit is a Bajocian chert-pebble conglomerate which, along with the immediately underlying black mudstone, we include in the Bowser Lake Group. Together with regional correlations, this confirms that the age of the basal part of the Bowser Lake Group is diachronous, younging southwards into Stikinia. Sandstone petrofacies trends and changes in conglomerate clast composition indicate arc uplift and dissection followed by Middle Jurassic orogen recycling. The isotopic ages of detrital zircons and granite clasts compared with the biochronologically constrained ages of the enclosing strata suggests that processes of intrusion, arc uplift, unroofing, and clastic deposition during the Early Jurassic occurred over intervals of significantly less than five million years.

The fossil assemblages of the Bajocian of Normandy are affected by taphonomic condensation, and the use of these assemblages for biostratigraphy must be carried out with great care because of the taphonomic reworking (reelaboration) of most of them. Nevertheless such beautiful fossils, ammonites in particular, retain their value at least as taxonomic references if their relative stratigraphic position is recognized. Such a goal has been achieved in the Bretteville section, where the "Oolithe Ferrugineuse de Bayeux" Formation (OFB), consisting of 14 beds contained within 170 cm of strata, is exposed. Each bed contains a condensed ammonite assemblage in which the overall chronologic interval represented by fossils is longer than the time of sedimentation of the bed, and no ammonites can be defined as contemporaneous with the enclosing matrix, except for the topmost two beds. The timing of biologic and sedimentary events in this Fe-oolitic succession must thus be established in an indirect way, through a stratigraphy of fossils based on their taphonomically delayed first occurrence. In particular, we can only define the maximum age of each layer, constrained by the youngest recorded fossil. On the basis of this approach, the lower part of the OFB is shown to fall within the middle to upper part of the Bajocian Stage (Humphriesianum to Parkinsoni chrons), whereas the uppermost OFB can be referred to as the uppermost Bajocian (latest Parkinsoni Chron). We conclude that, at Bretteville and in general for the Fe-oolites of Normandy, fossiliferous horizons with condensed assemblages have no value for definition of the biostratigraphic standard scale, and that indirect biostratigraphy is useful to assign minimal chronologic values to taxa when (1) their stratigraphical range has not yet been established in expanded successions, (2) they are new taxa, and (3) they are present only in a condensed succession that suffered from the same taphonomic constraints as the Bajocian of Normandy.

Jurassic tetrapod fossils are known from all of the continents, and their distribution documents a critical paleobiogeographic juncture in tetrapod evolution – the change from cosmopolitan Pangean tetrapod faunas to the provincialized faunas that characterize the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Two global tetrapod biochronological units (faunachrons) have been named for the Early Jurassic – Wassonian and Dawan – and reflect some Early Jurassic tetrapod cosmopolitanism. However, after the Dawan, a scattered and poorly-dated Middle Jurassic tetrapod record and a much better understood Upper Jurassic tetrapod record indicate that significant provincialization of the global tetrapod fauna had begun. Middle Jurassic tetrapod assemblages include distinct local genera of sauropod dinosaurs, which are large, mobile terrestrial tetrapods, and this suggests marked provinciality by Bajocian time. The obvious provincialism of well known Chinese Middle-Upper Jurassic dinosaur faunas also documents the end of tetrapod cosmopolitanism. The distribution of some Late Jurassic dinosaur taxa defines a province that extended from the western USA through Europe into eastern Africa. Provincial tetrapod biochronologies have already been proposed for this province and for the separate eastern Asian Late Jurassic province. Tetrapod footprints only identify two global assemblage zones, one of Early Jurassic and the other of Middle-Late Jurassic age. The incomplete state of Jurassic tetrapod biochronology reflects both an inadequate record with poor temporal constraints and a relative lack of study of the biostratigraphy of Jurassic fossil vertebrates.

The Operation Guidelines for the UNESCO World Heritage Convention state that proposed areas should: “..be outstanding examples representing major stages of Earth’s history, including the record of life”, “..contain all or most of the key interrelated and interdependent elements in their natural relationships”, “..have a management plan…” and “..have adequate long-term legislative, regulatory, institutional or traditional protection..”. By definition, Global Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs) should satisfy all these criteria, although in isolation, the proposal of any single GSSP is unlikely to succeed, however, as an individual site may lack a broader context. Nevertheless, combining a suite of GSSPs sites for a System within a ‘serial’ World Heritage site proposal would satisfy such a concern and could be an ultimate goal for the International Subcommission on Jurassic Stratigraphy.

Four Jurassic stratigraphic units have been recognised at Ras Sharwayn, about 300 km east of Al-Mukalla along coast of the Gulf of Aden. The Kohlan Formation (60 m) unconformably overlies the crystalline basement. Its lower and middle part consist of fluviatile sandstone and conglomerate. The upper part is made up of transitional coarse- and fine-grained sandstones and siltstones. The sequence ends with shallow marine fine-grained sandstones. The Shuqra Formation (71 m) can be divided into two members. The lower Calcareous-marly Member (45 m) consists of grey bioclastic limestone and subordinate nodular marl (inner to mid ramp). Its age is Late Oxfordian. The upper Carbonate Member (26 m) changes from basal reddish marly limestones (mid ramp) to thick beds of red-brown, coarsely crystalline limestones and dolomites (inner ramp). The topmost beds contain fossils of colonial organisms, essentially stromatoporoids. Its age is Late Oxfordian, and possibly earliest Kimmeridgian. The Madbi Formation (>30 m) consists of yellowish marl alternating with marly limestone and bioclastic limestone (coquinas) corresponding to storm layers (mid to outer ramp). With regard to its age, a specimen of Orthosphinctes sp., collected a few metres from the base, possibly refers to the Early Kimmeridgian. The Madbi Formation ends with an unconformity surface. The informal elastic unit (56 m) (including the Naifa Formation) consists, from bottom upwards, of: red-brown dolomite; grey detrital limestone with quartz grains; massive, white conglomerate with well rounded limestone clasts, quartz and bioclasts (e.g. colonial organisms). The last lithotypes are gravity flow deposits, accumulated at the base of a scarp possibly tectonic in origin, approximately at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary. This detailed lithological, sedimentological and biostratigraphical study has provided revised litostratigraphical subdivision and nomenclature and improved the stratigraphic control.

In accordance with the recommendations of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), the leading candidate for the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the base of the Bathonian Stage is located in the Ravin du B?s (Bas Auran area, SE France). This section was formally proposed as candidate nineteen years ago. A second potential candidate section is located in the Cabo Mondego area (Portugal). This Portuguese section, however, has not been formally proposed as a candidate for the Bathonian basal boundary stratotype. The formal selection and proposal of a GSSP for the Bathonian Stage is the responsibility of the Bathonian Working Group (BtWG) and is expected by September 2007. In accordance with the procedures to ratify GSSPs, a formal ballot on the selection and proposal of a GSSP for the Bathonian Stage, by post or email, by all members of the BtWG is the responsibility of the convenor and the International Subcommission on Jurassic Stratigraphy Executive, and will be carried out within this time scale.

Ham Cliff near Redcliff Point, Weymouth, Dorset (SW England) exposes one of Europe's most complete Callovian-Oxfordian boundary sequences and has consequently been identified as a potential candidate GSSP for the base of the Oxfordian Stage. The boundary sequence lies within the thick mudrock facies of the Oxford Clay Formation and is abundantly fossiliferous, cardioceratid ammonites in particular being conspicuous. By convention, the stage boundary is drawn at the first occurrence of the genus Cardioceras here represented by C. redcliffense Page, Melendez and Wright at the base of the Scarburgense Subchronozone of the Mariae Chronozone. Associated Perisphinctoidea (including Peltoceras, Alligaticeras and Euaspidoceras) provide additional biostratigraphical information. Other macrofossil groups show less discernible changes, although frequent belemnites (Hibolithes) provide new highresolution carbon and strontium isotope data which are consistent with global curves and continuous sedimentation across the boundary interval. Magnetostratigraphic information is also available. Foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by epistominids but include a flood of early planktonic forms, including ?Globuligerina oxfordiana (Grigelis) immediately above the boundary. Well-preserved nannofloras are dominated by Watznaueria with conspicuous Zeugrhabdotus, podorhabdids and Stephanolithion indicating the NJ14 Biozone. Ostracoda and holothurian spicules are also recorded. These results are synthesised to provide a multidisciplinary, integrated review of the suitability of Redcliff Point for the definition of an Oxfordian GSSP. Correlations with the French candidate site in Haute-Provence are discussed and proposals made for formally establishing a GSSP for the base of the Oxfordian Stage in Europe.

In 1949 the concept of protected geological sites was first established in UK law by Nature Conservancy (NC) as ‘Sites of Special Scientific Interest’ (SSSIs). In 1977 a systematic site selection process - the Geological Conservation Review (GCR) was established by the UK-wide Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) which identified over 3000 features of geological interest nationally (excluding Northern Ireland), including around 275 representing aspects of Jurassic stratigraphy and palaeontology. These GCR sites formed the basis for all subsequent geoconservation SSSI designation including under strengthened legislation in 1981 and 2002. The fragmentation of the NCC in 1991 established separate country conservation bodies in Scotland (Scottish Natural Heritage), Wales (Countryside Council for Wales), and England (English Nature) with a fourth, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) to oversee certain national and international activities. In Northern Ireland, however, nature conservation remained the responsibility of the Environment and Heritage Service of the Department of the Environment. With the establishment of these five separate organisations, policy and practice began to diverge. The consequences of this divergence are discussed with particular reference to its effects on the conservation of sites of Jurassic palaeontological and stratigraphical importance. Recommendations for future conservation strategies and procedures are proposed.

Opis:
At Moenkopi Wash along the Ward Terrace escarpment of northern Arizona strata of the upper Dinosaur Canyon Member of the Moenave Formation contain sedimentary structures we interpret as casts of tetrapod burrows. Sandstone casts and in situ burrows occur concentrated in two horizons that extend several hundred meters along the Ward Terrace escarpment. The structures, hosted in beds of eolian sandstone, form interconnecting networks of burrows that branch at right angles. Individual burrow casts have sub-circular cross sections and consist of nearvertical tunnels and horizontal to low-angle galleries that connect to larger chambers. Most burrow casts measure 5 to 15 cm in diameter, are filled by sandstone of similar grain size as the host rock, and have walls that are unlined and lack external ornamentation. Bedding plane exposure of the lower horizon reveals that the density of burrows exceeds 30 vertical tunnels per square meter. One exposure in the upper horizon reveals burrows concentrated in a mound-like structure with 1 m of relief. Rhizoliths, distinguished from burrows by their typical smaller diameters, calcareous infilling, and downward branching, co-occur with these burrows in the upper horizon. The fossil burrows in the Moenave Formation appear to have been constructed by a fossorial tetrapod with social behavior similar to the modern Mediterranean blind mole-rat. Although no skeletal remains are associated with the burrows, the fossil record suggests that the most likely producers of the Moenave burrows were tritylodontid cynodonts.

The Toyora Group, consisting of continental shelf sediments, is exposed in southwest Japan. It is divided into three formations, the Higashinagano, the Nishinakayama, and the Utano formations in ascending order. The Nm Member, the lower part of the Nishinakayama Formation, has yielded abundant ammonites, indicating successive ages of Early Toarcian. The ammonite zonation was established on these materials, but the Pliensbachian/Toarcian (P/T) boundary was not defined clearly in previous studies. A total of 99 ammonite specimens including 11 genera and 16 species were collected along the Sakuraguchi-dani Valley. The first occurrence of Dactylioceras helianthoides is the most suitable candidate for drawing the P/T boundary in the Toyora Group, the boundary being drawn at least 35.5 m lower than the previously indicated.

Mud-silt deposits of the Lower Jurassic Ciechocinek Formation from the Czestochowa-Wielun region are characterized by a low diversity ichnofossil association, which includes the ichnogenera Planolites, Palaeophycus, Helminthopsis, Gyrochorte, Protovirgularia and Spongeliomorpha as well as some unidentified pascichnia. This association points to deposition in a low-energy brackish environment with poorly oxygenated sediments. Changes of seafloor oxygenation, influenced by periodical bottom currents, resulted in various bioturbation intensities, which range from none to high.

The ferromanganese crusts (FMC) and nodules at Stankowa Skała near Nowy Targ (Pieniny Klippen Belt, Poland) are developed in pelagic condensed limestones. The crusts appear on an uneven surface of limestones with thinshelled Bositra bivalves dated to the (?)uppermost Bajocian -Callovian. The crusts are overlain by Oxfordian limestones rich in Globuligerina, containing Fe-Mn nodules and small fragments of calcite stromatolites rich in Mn, Fe, Ba oxyhydroxides. Petrological analyses of the FMC from Stankowa Skała indicate their hydrogenetic origin. Growth of the FMC was coeval with a period of a rapid oceanic floor spreading from the Bajocian to the Callovian, postulated for the Pieniny Klippen Belt in the Jurassic time on the basis of the palaeomagnetic studies.

A collection of ammonites of the genus Amoeboceras located carefully in the section of Nordvik Peninsula in northern Siberia has enabled recognition of the standard Boreal ammonite zones of the Upper Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian. The recognition of the standard Amoeboceras zones, well known in NW Europe and the Barents Sea area, in northern Siberia indicates the uniform character of the Late Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian ammonite faunas across the whole Boreal Province. Some comments on the occurrence of Boreal oppeliids of the genus Suboxydiscites in the studied section are also given.
