Boron-containing lubricant for rail-curve lubrication is developed. Its effectiveness was proved by series of experiments carried out on different types of friction machines. The mechanism of antiscoring effect of boron-containing additives was analyzed in terms of physical adsorption.

There are very many different laws of distribution (for example), bell-shaped (Gaussian) distribution, lognormal, Weibull distribution, exponential, uniform, Poisson's, Student's distributions and so on, which help to describe the real picture of failures with elements in various mechanical systems, in locomotives and carriages, too. To diminish the possibility of getting the rough error in the output of maths data treatment the new method is demonstrated in this article. The task is solved both to the discrete, and to the continuous distributions.

The railway transport of goods was in past the most used type of transport. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the performance of this mode of transport was reduced. At present, international trade is expanding in the direction of Asia–Europe. For economic and, above all, ecological reasons, it is appropriate to move the transport operations back to rail transport. The article focuses on progressive systems of railway transport of freight in the East–West direction, namely the use of the CargoBeamer system. CargoBeamer system (hereinafter referred to as CB) is an innovative technology for the transport of road semi-trailers and containers CBoXX specially designed for the CB system. The main advantage of this system is to support the transport standard road semitrailers, which will be implemented in 70% of shipments in road transport in the EU. The CB system is largely automated, especially for horizontal loading and unloading or when changing the gauge. The CB system allows to lower the shipment time significantly, thanks to automatisation of loading and unloading processes and gauge change. The benefits of the CB system are presented by an example of the necessary manipulation operations by a China– Russia– Europe goods shipment. The article discusses the possibility of the application of the NFC technology as a system of selling tickets in passenger rail transport. The NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is a wireless and contactless technology of transmission of radio data over short distances (max. 5 cm). This technology is very similar to the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. It is assumed that this technology will spread rapidly and that already in 2015 around 85% of the payments in the EU will be made via mobile phones. This paper presents a research of passenger interest in this method of payment for tickets in the passenger rail transport in Slovakia. Further, an analysis of the applications of the NFC technology as a system of selling tickets in passenger rail transport, including the protection of data in mobile phones, the processes in case of losing a mobile phone and ensuring the communication between both parties was presented in the article. The last part of this analysis shows the possibility of purchasing tickets regardless of the carrier and the transport type.
W artykule opisano możliwe zastosowania technologii NFC jako systemu sprzedaży biletów w pasażerskim transporcie kolejowym. Technologia NFC (Near Field Communication) jest bezprzewodową i bezdotykową metodą transmisji danych na krótkie odległości (max. 5 cm). Jest ona bardzo podobna do technologii RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). Zakłada się, że będzie się ona szybko rozwijała i już w 2015 roku 85% płatności dokonywanych na terenie Unii Europejskiej nastąpi za pośrednictwem telefonów mobilnych. W artykule przedstawiono badania oceniające zainteresowanie pasażerów tą metodą zakupu biletów kolejowych na Słowacji. Przedstawiono w nim także planowane zastosowania technologii NFC jako systemu sprzedaży biletów w pasażerskim transporcie kolejowym, z uwzględnieniem ochrony danych w telefonach komórkowych, czynności w przypadku utraty telefonu komórkowego i zapewnieniem komunikacji pomiędzy elementami systemu. Przeanalizowano w nim także możliwość zakupu biletów niezależnie od przewoźnika oraz rodzaju transportu.

This article assesses the effect of factors, such as the number of sidings, the number of station holds, and the occurrence of transit traffic on the volume of freight transport on railway lines in Poland. The volume of freight transport on a railway lin as expressed by the operational work done by freight trains running on this line and the transported freight mass by them. Most often the effect of factors affecting on the volume of transport is assessed by a team of experts. In this analysis, calculations of partial correlation coefficients were performed. The calculations showed that there is a clear relationship between the volume of freight transport and the number of sidings on the line and the occurrence of transit traffic. Based on the obtained partial correlation coefficients, weights corresponding to the effects of individual factors on the volume of freight transport were calculated. The use of these weights for further analysis will avoid the subjective expert assessments that have been used in this type of analysis so far.

This article focuses on the competitive disadvantages of existing intermodal rail-road transport compared with road transport. The authors state that the domestic and continental combined freight transport system can be competitive in terms of both time and price with road freight transport. The new container transshipment device contributes to a new terminal structure on the freight rail-road transport market, considering environment protection requirements, and the concept has helped the logistics sector to become cost competitive. The scientific novelty is that the container transshipment robot enables new technical and organizational technology solutions for combined rail-road intermodal freight transport.

Planning the frequency of rail services is closely related to forecasting the number of passengers and is part of the comprehensive analysis of railway systems. Most of the research presented in the literature focuses only on selected areas of this system (e.g. urban agglomerations, urban underground transport, transfer nodes), without presenting a comprehensive evaluation that would provide full knowledge and diagnostics of this mode of transport (i.e. railway transport). Therefore, this article presents methods for modelling passenger flow in rail traffic at a national level (using the example of Poland). Time series models were used to forecast the number of passengers in rail transport. The error, trend, and seasonality (ETS) exponential smoothing model and the model belonging to the ARMA class were used. An adequate model was selected, allowing future values to be forecast. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model follows the tested series better than the ETS model and is characterised by the lowest values of forecast errors in relation to the test set. The forecast based on the ARIMA model is characterised by a better detection of the trends and seasonality of the series. The results of the present study are considered to form the basis for solving potential rail traffic problems, which depend on the volume of passenger traffic, at the central level. The methods presented can also be implemented in other systems with similar characteristics, which affects the usability of the presented solutions.

This study analyzed the usage of data of track geometry measurement for railway infrastructure maintenance processing support and estimated its influence on railway infrastructure maintenance decision-making. Especially, the approach assessment of the influence of track geometry monitoring on railway infrastructure processing. The well-timed maintenance of the arrangement of railway tracks in allowable conditions is sufficient for the smooth and steady running of rail vehicles. The mechanism of track gauge widening during exploitation is usually gradual and relatively long-lasting. When are not detected in a timely manner, the final track failures often arise under the effect of additional factors, such as surpassed train speed limit, poorly maintained and functioning running gear of a rail vehicle, misalignment of rails, and extreme dynamical effects. A questionnaire considering the influence of the application of track geometry monitoring was formulated. An expert review was completed in order to perform a comparative analysis of the features of track geometry monitoring with the greatest influence on railway infrastructure maintenance processing. The data collected from respondents were processed using a multi-criterion estimation method, especially an interactive fuzzy linear assignment method. Finally, basic conclusions and considerations are given.

This research analyses the competitive advantages of road and rail transport through the example of Ukraine transportation market. Spheres of efficient usage of rail and road transport while transporting perishable goods have been studied. The key factors influencing the mode choice, as well as the kinds of cargo that depend on the mode choice have been determined with the help of revealed preference data. A mathematical model of mode choice has been offered. The criterion of the effectiveness of this model is the economical profit of the logistics system ‘shipper – carrier – receiver’. The advantage of using the suggested model is the possibility of calculating invisible costs while evaluating alternative transport mode, including funds immobilization and cargo loss. The tools in the study are the methods of system analysis, mathematical modelling, regression analysis and expert evaluations. The acquired results can be used while justifying the mode choice and determining the spheres of efficient usage of various modes of transport. It has been determined that the factor for using the rail is the distance longer than 600 km, as the economical profit of the logistics system is higher in this case. At the same time, with distances shorter than 600 km, road transportation is a better choice.

The article deals with research on the relationship between the performance of road and rail freight transport and transport infrastructure in EU countries. The authors of the article examined the relationship between transport performance and transport infrastructure by correlation and regression analyses. Verification of the statistical significance of the regression model was also performed. The main objective of the contribution is to find out what are the relationships and influences between transport infrastructure and development of transport performance. Research has shown that the strength of the relationship between transport infrastructure and transport performance is different for states. There are strong dependencies as well as strong independent relationships between the transport infrastructure and transport performance.
