The author’s intention was to recall the definition, genesis and development of the Polish Catholic press in various historical and political periods by reviewing the available literature on the subject. The emergence of Catholic-oriented periodicals in Poland dates back to the first half of the 19th century during the partitions, while significant development took place after the Second Polish Republic regained independence. The first years of the People’s Republic of Poland were characterised by illusory democratic freedoms, which is why new Catholic periodicals were established. An important turning point came in 1953, when almost all periodicals published by the Catholic Church were closed. Between 1953 and 1956, the editorship of Tygodnik Powszechny was taken over by the PAX Association, which collaborated with the Communist authorities, with the aim of dividing Catholic circles. During the political thaw, some titles were reinstated, although their content was still subject to strict censorship. The democratic changes of 1989 brought in the free market, which in turn became a financial challenge for Catholic editorial boards. Due to a lack of funds, the longstanding Przegląd Powszechny ceased its publications in 2012. The article is an informative and bibliographical review and shows the correlation between the development of the press and changing political conditions. The analysis results in a fragmentary study of the selected press segment.

The process of “thaw”, developing in Poland after the death of Joseph Stalin, for a long time did not include the aspect of religious freedom. Demands to restore the possibility of free worship, teaching religious education, and, above all, the release of the Primate Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, were always present in the society, as evidenced by school strikes or slogans appearing during the Poznań events of June 1956. The changes of October 1956, initiated by the 8th plenary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party, led to an improvement in state-Church relations and implementation of the most important postulates of the Church, including the return of the Primate to Warsaw, the reinstatement of religious education in schools, and the return of chaplains to prisons and hospitals. The authorities, however, did not treat the above as part of a binding agreement. As early as in the 1957 and 1958 activities restricting the functioning of the Church began. The symbolic markings of the process were the attack on the Primate’s Institute at Jasna Góra in 1958 and the withdrawal of consent for the construction of the church in Kraków’s Nowa Huta. Finally, in 1961, religious education was removed from schools, and in 1962 a separate department of the Security Service was established for the sole purpose of the fight against religion. Although the practices of the Stalinist period did not make their comeback, the 1956 thaw appeared to be only a short episode in a constant conflict between the communist state and the Roman Catholic Church.

Opis:
This article deals with the issues of educating journalists during the Franco regime in Spain and the place occupied by the School of Journalism of the Catholic Church in this system. The first years of dictatorship were characterized by a strong subordination of education and occupation to the current interests of the state, which regulated access to the profession and education only within the framework of the State School of Journalism. In the second half of the 50’s there was a gradual liberalization of the system, consisting in the gradual admission of other entities to the organization of vocational education of journalists, especially the Catholic Church. This allowed for the launch in 1960 of the School of Journalism of the Catholic Church, the functioning of which was the first manifestation of the regime’s gradual withdrawal from state supervision over the process of educating journalists. The Catholic Church School referred to the pre-war, excellent traditions of the journalism school organized by the Catholic daily El Debate, becoming a kind of counterweight to the regime’s State School of Journalism. The competition between schools (although still slight at that time) contributed to an increase in the quality of education. The emphasis on the completion of general education or the design of curricula taking into account the development of information technology made it possible to equip students with competences required in the labour market, which previously could only be obtained to a greater or lesser extent in practice.
