Opis:
In this study, the data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) are used to investigate whether the PISA science test score is a good indicator of competence in science and technology. The researcher uses a number of scientific and technical journal articles per million people as a measure instrument to represent the competence of science and technology. A regression model analysis suggests that the PISA science scores would significantly predict competence in S & T, even when controlling the number of researchers in R&D per million people and the R&D expenditure (% of GDP). Moreover, it shows that R&D expenditure (% of GDP) is another important determinant of the competence in S & T. Multicollinearity is also found between the R&D expenditure (% of GDP) and the number of researchers in R&D per million people. The policy implication is clear.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to obtain information on pre-service teachers’ experiences and viewpoints on science journals and journal writing. The current study utilized a qualitative research method, namely phenomenography. The data were collected by conducting face to face semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the verbatim transcripts of pre-service teachers’ interviews was performed with the use of the phenomenographic method. The findings are presented as themes, subthemes and categories. The participants in the study commented on the content of science journals, usefulness of journal writing in science courses and using science journals in primary education based on their observations during the practical activities at schools.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to describe processes and methods suggested by science teachers for changing alternative conceptions about genetics. The study focused on a group of 17 (8 male and 9 female) science teachers who were graduate level students or completed a graduate program. Hence, the group was the case of this study. Qualitative data of the study was collected by detailed lesson plans prepared by the participants for overcoming two alternative conceptions about genetics (chromosome is an organelle and DNA is found as a whole set in the body) and follow-up interviews. The data was analyzed by descriptive analysis. The findings showed that the case group of this study represented fragmented processes to overcome the alternative conceptions. At the same time, they did not provide methods or processes in line with conceptual change models. These findings mean that science and technology teachers who have completed a graduate program or are currently graduate students of science education are not able to plan coherent teaching on alternative conceptions or are not aware of conceptual change processes and methods.
