Opis:
The Fourth Book of Maccabees (4 Macc.) ‒ although being a philosophical and rhetorical work that mainly deals with the issue of overcoming passion by means of „pious reason” ‒ contains a number of references to God which have naturally been woven into the corpus of this work. All these references allow one to draw up an image of God present in the mind of the author of 4Macc. It is evident from the analyses, that although 4 Macc. is imbued with the spirit of Greek (Hellenistic) philosophy and literature, the image of God sketched by the author of 4 Macc. is firmly rooted in the Old Testament’s theological tradition. Even the concept of pro, noia, taken directly from Greek philosophy, in 4 Macc. has a close relationship with theology of the Old Testament. This leads to the conclusion that the author of 4 Macc. ‒ in spite of his rooting in the Hellenistic culture ‒ was a pious Jew who, through his work, wanted to strengthen the faith of his brethren.

Opis:
The presented paper analyzes the text of Rev 11:15–18. The analysis showed that the divine judgment depicted in the discussed text has two dimensions. First, it is the reward for the faithful which is defined as “giving reward” (dounai ton misthon). This reward is being given to the faithful (designed as douloi, phoboumenoi to onoma, prophetai, hagioi). The other aspect of the judgment is a negative one. The act of punishment is expressed by the verbs krino and diaphtheiro. The people being judged and punished are defined as nekroi and diaphtheriontes ten gen. The term nekroi, in the author’s opinion, is to be understood in a spiritual meaning. The sentence pronounced on the culprits is a typical example of retributive justice. Because the term nekroi is to be understood spiritually (i.e., the matter is “the spiritually dead”) one cannot see in Rev 11:15–18 a direct announcement of the last judgment. The analysis of the following context shows that the beginning of the last judgment is performed by means of events depicted in Rev 12. The main criterion of affiliation regarding one of the two groups (the rewarded or the punished) is the attitude towards the Messiah presented in Rev 12:5. It does not mean that there is no relationship between the judgment having been already executed and the last judgment. The verdict pronounced by the last one will be a logical consequence of what takes place now.

The article reviews J.J. Pudełko’s book-length study titled Profetyzm w Księdze Syracha [Prophetism in the Book of Sirach]. Following an initial presentation of the book, the author focuses on its methodological aspect and offers an assessment of its merit before discussing the main thesis of Pudełko in the context of other scholarly opinions on the issue. Based on her meticulous analysis of prophetism in the works of the Jerusalem sage, Pudełko concludes that Sirach saw himself as an heir to the Old Testament prophets, as his role of a sage corresponded to the tasks fulfilled earlier by prophets. Although this argument is questioned by most contemporary analysts of the Book of Sirach, still Pudełko’s book constitutes an important intervention in the debate on Sirach’s prophetic self-awareness.

The author touches upon the question of the canonical interpretation of the Bible as instanced by the Book of Job. First, he discusses the place of the Book of Job in the Jewish and Christian canons. In the end, he presents some hermeneutic implications that result from that fact that Job has been placed in the third sector of canon (Ketubim, Hagiographa), usually in the first place. This indicates that there is a need to read according to the key of biblical wisdom (hokma), rather than in the historical aspect.

In the discussed verse 1 Macc 3:21, there are two main motivations for the struggle of Judah Maccabee and his compatriots against the Seleucid army of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The text combines the struggle for the physical existence of Jews with the defence of native customs established on the foundations of the Mosaic Law. There is a clear indissolubility of life and faith in the Jewish consciousness. One cannot survive without one’s own religious tradition, which is the basis of national identity. This article aims to explore the meaning of the Greek adjective νόμιμος, -η, -ον, appearing in the analysed verse of the the book, as substantive (τὸ) νόμιμον, "custom" especially in the plural τὰ νόμιμα, "customs, usages, norms". This term will be presented from a theological and historical perspective in search of an answer to the question about its content and implied meaning in the speech of Judah to his countrymen before the beginning of the battle of Beth-Choron. This content will be both the justification of the struggle undertaken and its importance in the history of Israel in the middle of the 2nd century BC.

In recent years, some scholars have claimed that God’s creation of humanity in the divine image (Gen 1:26-28) presents both a royal-functional reading and also the model of nonviolence that counters recurrent violence throughout the Hebrew Bible. This nonviolent reading of humanity created in God’s image disregards the mention of this concept at the end of the Flood Narrative in Gen 9:6. This article firstly takes into consideration the proximate context and semantics of the sentence in Gen 9:6 expressed through its structural, linguistic and syntactic aspects. Moreover, the pragmatics of this saying will be analyzed through the investigative criteria of discursive analysis to better identify how semantic meaning and other contextual features underpin what is communicated by this challenging utterance.

Opis:
The Praise of the Ancestors (Sir 44–49) offers an interpretation of the story of Biblical Israel as seen through the eyes of Ben Sira. His telling of this story, permeated with God’s working, contains the names of male protagonists only. Still, analysis of textual versions of the Praise of the Ancestors (Hebrew, Greek and Syriac) enables us to detect some anonymous allusions to women (Sir 46:13; 47: 6.19; 48:19, 49:7). The present article attempts to investigate the reasons why there are no named references to Biblical heroines from Israel’s history, individuals who are mentioned in other books of the Bible. One answer might be found in the particular focus and educational purpose of the Praise, which was to provide a life model for young boys. Another reason might lie in the genre of the Praise, which was used in reference to women in Greek texts, but not in the Bible, where the name lists of praised heroes contained male names only. However, the most convincing reason for the absence of female names in the Praise of the Ancestors is found in its association with the priesthood of Biblical Israel. For the writer of the book, true high priests of the Jerusalem Temple constituted the ultimate keystone of the covenant between God and his people. Women, being absent from the official priesthood of Israel, are consequently absent from Sir 44–49.

Opis:
The document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, called What is man? A Journey through Biblical Anthropology points out in Chapter 1 (“The Human being created by God”), par. 33 that “[t]he failure to recognise the ‘created’ nature of the human being is made explicit in history as an arrogant presumption…” (46) and in par. 34 that “[a]n extraordinary endowment of intelligence, wealth and power gives the human being the illusion of being equal to God. To expose this deception of conscience the Lord predicts the inglorious end of the arrogant” (47). Many of the critiques and prophecies of Hosea are proclaimed in a period of Israelite history which reflects false and arrogant presumptions of the people of God. During the reign of Jeroboam II (ca. 784–753 BC) Israel experienced economic growth, territorial expansion and peace with the Arameans and the Judeans. However, especially following the Syro-Ephraimite war (734–732 BC) it became clear that Israel’s political and military manoeuvres and his trust in his own strength can only lead to disaster. This is one of the recurring messages of Hosea who points out that the only way to stand is to believe and trust in God alone. Many of his images and concepts describe Israel’s false beliefs and presumptions which are based on the erroneous knowledge of God. Hos 7:8-16 can be read as an essence of this message. Its literary devices and notions emphasize that while Israel appears to be potent, he is in fact impotent, the undiscerning nation’s “strength” is withering away. Israel seems wise and knowledgeable when he is in fact unwise and does not know the way of life. In the context of the entire book this passage affirms that the basis of the relation of God and Israel is always the right knowledge of him which entails the right knowledge of the self and of its place in the universe. One of God’s greatest mercies for creation and Israel is that he is available, he can be sought, found and known through his words and deeds. Hosea as the mediator of God conveys to Israel that they can call upon God, seek him and know him. While his message is for a special historical period and circumstances, it is relevant for all ages when humans ignore their created nature and aspire to be powerful, self-sufficient, intelligent in economic, scientific, political and military matters.

It was claimed more than once that the journey of Paul and his landing on the shore of Malta in the last two chapters of the Book of Acts can be interpreted as a theological parallel to the account of death and resurrection of Jesus. There are, to be sure, some reasonable arguments in favor of that, such as close relationship between death and death risk or similarities to the journey of Jonah. But can it be convincingly argued that Luke really did intend a parallelism of this kind in Acts 27-28? The paper deals with literary elements of Luke 23-24 in order to make this hypothesis more conclusive.

References to music are common elements of prophetic literature, especiallyin the Books of the Major Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel), indirectly indicating writers’ interests in that form of art. There are five musical terms mentioned in the Book of Amos: šôpär - horn (Am 2,2; 3,6), qînäh - lamentation, dirge (Am 5,1; 8,10), nëbel - probably lyre (Am 5,23; 6,5), šîr - song (Am 5,23; 6,5; 8,3.10) and Külê-šîr - instruments of song, string instruments (Am 6,5). The purpose of the article is to interpret the musical motifs excluding two related to singing in the biblical and archeomusicological contexts. Am 5,23 and 6,5 can be linked with real musical performance practices in sacred and secular environments in ancient Israel/Palestine. Am 2,2 confirms how important part in the Near East played signal aerophones, whereas Am 3,6 reflects characteristic aspects of Amos’s vocational narrative. The figure of Kind David in Am 6,5 is analyzed in the context of the origin of musical instruments. The comparative materials for Am 2,2; 3,6; 5,23 and 6,5 are mainly the prophetic Books.

Opis:
The main subject of Sir 6:18-37 is acquisition of wisdom. The pericopemay be divided into three parts: vv. 18-22 present the prerequisite for the acquisition of wisdom, namely undergoing wisdom formation; vv. 23-31 deal with one’s submission to wisdom, while the last fragment (vv. 32-37) focuses on the means necessary to obtain wisdom. The present article constitutes an analysis of the first part of Sir 6:18-37, that is Sir 6:18-22. Two sections may be distinguished within this excerpt - in the first one (vv. 18-19) the sage makes use of agricultural imagery to encourage his disciple to make a patient effort to seek wisdom, since the acquisition of wisdom is a long-lasting process that requires a lot of discipline (the process spans a person’s whole life; cf. Sir 6:18). The author emphasizes, however, that those who seek wisdom and undergo wisdom formation will soon be able to take advantage of its fruit. In the second section (vv. 20-22) the author describes a person who refuses to undergo wisdom formation as uneducated (cf. 6:20a) and devoid of intellectual abilities (literally, heartless; cf.6:20b). Lacking patience, such a person refuses to make an effort to receive wisdom education and rejects wisdom altogether. Thus, they will never become wise. Even though wisdom is the province of the few only (cf. 6:22), it is accessible to anyone, regardless of the person’s origin, social status or other external conditions. There is, however, one vital prerequisite, namely, a person’s inner attitude or disposition, their willingness to make an effort and their patience. Only few people fulfil these conditions and acquire wisdom.

The story about Jephthah is placed in the middle of the Book of Judges (Judges 10:6-12:7). Therefore we recognise in this figure an important link in the quest for the model of a ruler in the period of pre-monarchic Israel. In order to reconstruct the image of Jephthah as a leader the method of narration has been applied. The narrative programme has confirmed that Jephthah, while seeking to find a solution for the crisis of power, became the paradigm of a ruler. In the light of narrative techniques used by the narrator, Jephthah fails as a paradigm, for he loses his daughter and he is seen by the generation of Ephraim as an unfulfilled ruler. There are three reasons at the source of his unfulfilled power: treating power as a means to satisfy one’s ambition; rejecting power as a service on behalf of the good of his subjects; eventually, no roots in the tradition, history, and religion of the fellowship in which is he to govern.
