The Book of Revelation confronts its readers with the problem of violence and irrationality, thereby putting at stake its claim to inspiration and truth. In a canonical and pastoral approach, the document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission explains this unruly book as an expression of Christ’s “burning love”. However, Revelation offers its reader a dramatic counter-world, in which neither love nor logic may be learnt but the coping with passion and “tears”. The visionary strategy (1) gives the Christians insights into their own truth, (2) establishes their very own, “heavenly” perspective, (3) meticulously provides them with theocentric knowledge of the purpose of their everyday struggles, (4) transforms them by a dramatic experience of redemption, and (5) lets them encounter Christ in an experience of longing and trust.

The author shows the peculiarities of the ecumenical translation of the Bible into Polish against the background of the most important ecumenical translation projects into other languages. The aim of the research was to present the features of Polish inter-confessional translation. The author presented the history of earlier inter-Christian translations of the Bible into Polish, the team-committee method in the work on the translation of the Bible and its impact on ecumenism and the achieved effect. The research followed a historical method based on use of introductions to ecumenical Bibles in foreign languages and on never published archives from the Bible Society in Poland. Another group of sources are recension and papers on the ecumenical Bible. The results of the studies carried out similarities and differences between the foreign ecumenical translations and the Polish edition; the specificity of the polish biblical style of the ecumenical Bible; the reasons for such a late appearance of the Polish ecumenical Bible.

Opis:
Albertus Bobovius/Ali Ufkî Bey was a typical go-between of his time, a learned translator and convert who benefited from his double religious sensitivity. As a consequence, he was able to create a transcultural translation of the Bible in the 17th century. This paper brings context to these aspects of his life. Ali Ufkî Bey created his works on religion during a time of intensive confessionalization, when Istanbul was a hub for many political interests with various religious and cultural options intersecting in the Ottoman capital. The project of translating the Bible to the national languages of Islam was carried out according to the vision of an alliance between Islam and reformed Christian groups, supporting the thesis of Calvino-Turkism, promoted by John Amos Comenius. As oriental scholars were lacking sufficient command of Turkish, they had to commission highly qualified go-betweens. There were two competing plans: Dutch Calvinist and Anglican. Bobovius was a part of the Dutch plan, along with Yahya Bin Ishak, a Jewish dragoman. The strategies of translation chosen by Bobovius were very modern according to the present knowledge of the art of translation, but in his era, there were difficulties in choosing the right language register and the right religious imagery to find proper equivalents. Underestimated by his contemporaries, Bobovius was rehabilitated by today’s linguists, and his “Turkish Bible” is still in use today. The text does not contest the religious identity of the author of this translation of the Bible but presents the hybridity of this figure against the background of the wider historical and confessional context of 17th-century Istanbul. It also provides examples of Bobovius’s translation choices and an initial interpretation of his methodology of timeless transcultural translation, from the perspective of contemporary translation theories. In the light of contemporary transcultural studies, present-day scholarship may treat Ali Ufkî as a transcultural agent and a gifted go-between.

Opis:
The article presents the new ecumenical polish translation of the Scripture and focuses on its original aspects. The author of the article translated the books of Qohelet and Song of Songs in the Ecumenical Bible. The main newness in the book of Qohelet was a translation of the motto of the book. The traditional “vanity of vanities” was interpreted according to the Hebrew etymology connected with wind and vapor, using at the same time an adjectival form. Literally it could be expressed in English: “evanescent, how evanescent – says Qohelet – everything is so evanescent”. Another newness is the interpretation of the Hebrew re’ut ruach as “similar to the wind” based on the interpretation of the word re’ut in connection with the verbal root resh-ayin-hei. Also we propose, on the base of some semantic and intertextual analyses, a new interpretation of the passage considered misogynic of Qoh 7,27-28: “Behold, I have discovered this, says Qohelet, comparing one women with another to find an explanation. I am not able to understand even the one whom I love with all my heart. I am able to understand one man among a thousand, but I am not able to understand any woman among all these”. In the translation of the Song of Songs, instead of the traditional marginal notes “bride” and “bridegroom” introducing the speeches of different characters, we choose simply “she” and “he”.

Opis:
The article deals with Jan Kochanowski’s Psałterz Dawidów [David’s Psalter], published in 1579. This paraphrase of the biblical Psalter, intensely lyrical in its spirit, was inspired by George Buchanan’s Latin poetic paraphrase of the Psalms, which is strongly Horatianising. Kochanowski’s work can be seen as a presentation of humanist piety. That is to say that the borders between secular and sacred spaces, or even between Judeo-Christian and Pagan traditions, may seem blurred. The Psalter is also interconfessional (or “doctrinally neutral”) and acts as a universal mirror reflecting the human mind. The author analyses three of Kochanowski’s Psalms to demonstrate the intellectual and emotional space of his Psalter and its polyphonic structure: 1 (Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum), 19 (Caeli enarrant gloriam Dei) and 91 (Qui habitat in adiutorio Altissimi), displaying some interplays of ideas and different approaches to paraphrasing applied by the poet.

Fabrics such as byssus and crimson wool can provide us with a surprisingly large amount of information about the circumstances of Biblical books origin. Analysis of lexis related to mentioned textiles, present in Exodus and in Chronicles, allows to notice a meaningful change, occurring in technical biblical terminology. In Exodus, byssus is represented by שֵׁשׁ and crimson – by תּוֹלַעַת שָׁנִי, whilst in Chronicles naming is changed respectively to בּוּץ and כַּרְמִיל. Analysis of etymology leads to the conclusion, that textiles mentioned in Torah belong to an early vocabulary, created in the times before the exile, in Chronicles, on the other hand, encountered terms belong to period of Babylonian captivity or after the exile. Confrontation of these textiles with the other, non-biblical sources, provides a confirmation of proposed dating and facilitates identification of mysterious biblical byssus, which turns out to be a very thin linen and not – as sometimes confused – sea silk. Juxtaposition of the Greek equivalents allows to draw a conclusion, that terminology of both Torah and Chronicles was known to the LXX translators, who – despite a clear caesura – translate terms consequently: שֵׁשׁ and בּוּץ to βύσσος/βύσσινος, and תּוֹלַעַת שָׁנִי and כַּרְמִיל to κόκκινος

One of the weakest points of the historical-critical method of interpreting the Bible is the lack of means of appropriate application of the message of biblical texts (treated as texts from a distant past) to our present reality. The theory of German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer may provide modern readers of the Bible with various intersubjectively verifiable ways of actualization of biblical texts: dramaturgical, liturgical, iconical, based on tradition and authority, juridical, and imparting wisdom. The last one seems to be the most appropriate for seeking and communicating the message of the Bible in the context of modern European, agnostic culture.

A widely distributed religious legend maintains that Ezra the scribe rewrote the Hebrew Bible sometime during the post-exilic period. The story is interpreted differently among its varying iterations. Some accounts view Ezra’s recovery of the Scriptures as an act of divine wonder while other versions insist that Ezra’s hand distorted the biblical text. Both outlooks are present in medieval Islamic writings. This article considers the polemical approach of three Muslim authors (e.g., al-Ṭabarī, al-Thaʿlabī, and Ibn Ḥazm) and their portraits of Ezra, including his role that led to a purported compromise of Jewish monotheism. The article explores Ibn Ḥazm’s claim that Ezra the scribe corrupted the biblical text. Several sources are examined (e.g., 4 Ezra, Porphyry, Justin Martyr, a Samaritan liturgical imprecation, and diverse rabbinic traditions) as plausible support for the charge that Ezra corrupted the Scriptures. A tale from Avot d’Rabbi Natan that features Ezra’s alleged scribal dots is posited as a reasonable source for the comment. Given Ibn Ḥazm’s interpretive outlook and Ezra’s prominent role in the story, the dots offer a new and sensible explanation.

New translations of the Bible may suffer from the fact that sometimes translators who need to demonstrate that their renditions are really new, have a tendency to introduce new versions at any price, which may result either in fancy, less satisfactory solutions, or in mistakes. Only some of the radical experiments are successful. Biblical scholars and translators should keep in mind that the same original can be, by definition, translated in many equally satisfactory ways, so that new translations are frequently only parallel and equivalent to the older versions. Literal or ‘word by word’ rendition, which still reappears in its radical execution, when there is an attempt at imitating grammatical structures of the original language, inevitably results in unfaithful interpretations in which some crucial meanings and style features are lost. A non-literal translation can be equivalent or ‘faithful’, but a literal translation cannot be faithful by definition. In a moderate version, literal translation can be used for metalinguistic discussions only. The use of brackets for words or phrases without which the translation is incomprehensible or grammatically and/or stylistically distorted, should be abandoned. Real etymological meanings of words are by definition obsolete and anachronistic, and should be used with utmost caution.
