Opis:
The contribution undertakes the problem of the season of the year, when St Paul wrote 1 Cor. Among the authors the opinion prevails that it was in the spring months. The author of the article first analyses the events that happened between 1 Cor and the probable leaving Ephesus by Paul (cf. 16, 8); then − how long they lasted: the sea voyage between Ephesus and Corinth that he had to go on a few times. This leads to the conclusion that the hypothesis of ’spring’ is possible only if the Apostle left Ephesus later than on the feast of Quinquagesima. Besides this the author of the article gives two reasons why 1 Cor must have been written in the autumn of the last but one calendar year of Paul’s stay in Ephesus. The first of them is based on an analysis of the course of collection for the poor in Jerusalem, whose beginning is shown in 1 Cor 16, 1-3. The second reason follows from an analysis of the Apostle’s plans in 16, 8-9, which text is an explanation why the stay in Ephesus was prolonged; under different circumstances he would leave the town sooner.

Opis:
The author seeks to verify the hypothesis that Paul wrote the Letter to the Philippians in Ephesus. First he proves that the apostle was there a prisoner, then that the traditional view, the Roman hypothesis, poses some difficulties. The author analyzes the circumstances in Phil, pertaining to Paul, and checks any possible cases (ie sites) in which they could have taken place. Only in the case of Ephesus that the circumstances from Phil can be confirmed by other sources. The author presents some reasons in favour of Ephesus. At the same time he proves that even though there is no mention in Phil about the money raised on behalf of the poor in Jerusalem, and Paul’s collaborators are absent, the Ephesus’ hypothesis can still be defended. These facts even speak in favour of it. The author situates Paul’s prison in Ephesus. The Phil was written during the summer of the last but one year of the apostle’s sojourn in this town. It was several months before the Letter to the Corinthians was written in the autumn of the same year.

The article deals with an exegetical misunderstanding revolving around the purported existence of two different ways of reckoning the hours of the day in antiquity, and consequently in the Gospels: an alleged Roman mode (in John’s Gospel) and the Jewish one (in the Synoptics). Among Johannine scholars a disagreement exists over the issue of which system was embraced by the Evangelist. While the majority claim that John followed the known Jewish system of reckoning hours, a minority argue that another, distinctively Roman system was being employed in the FG. In its first part, the article reviews extrabiblical ancient literature to demonstrate that, while the Romans in fact had two systems of marking the beginning of the day (dies civilis, legitimus – starting at midnight, and dies naturalis, verus – starting at sunrise), the manner of reckoning the hours of the day (and the night) was precisely the same for the Romans as for the Jews. In the second part, both systems are applied to four specific Johannine references to the hours of the day (1:39; 4:6; 4:52; and 19:14) in order to assess which method of reckoning the hours better suits the literary context of each narrative. While this internal analysis of the Johannine text is inconclusive, our assessment of the external, extrabiblical evidence points to the conclusion that the ancients, including John the Evangelist, used only one, nearly universal manner of reckoning the hours, i.e. beginning from sunrise.

Opis:
The article deals with two Qumran manuscripts of the Astronomical Book of Enoch. The discussion concentrates on the meaning of the arithmetical calculation contained in the Aramaic text. Previous interpretations of the whole calculation presented all the fractions as related to the illuminated surface of the mooon in its waxing and waning phase. Such explanations have to be abandoned. The calculation denotes periods of moon visibility on the sky during the day and during the night, while only one column refers to the amount of light assigned to the surface of the moon. Thus the whole calculation should be considered as an attempt to present in a schematic way the time of moon visibility, and as an attempt to base time computus on the movement of the moon.
