Dzięki zachowaniu równowagi między wiernością dokładnego tłumaczenia a poczuciem zażyłości, tłumaczenia Weinfelda zostały docenione przez izraelskich krytyków. Ma również niezaprzeczalny wpływ na twórczość poetów izraelskich.
David Weinfeld is one of the leading Israeli translators of Polish poetry into Hebrew. His translation work, especially of Czesław Miłosz and Zbigniew Herbert’s poetry, played an important role in the poetry translated into Hebrew. Thanks to preserving a balance between adherence to the exact translation and a sense of familiarity, Weinfeld’s translation work has been appreciated among Israeli critics. It also has undeniable impact on Israeli poets’ writings.

  The present issue of our journal is devoted to Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature as well as themes and conventions of religious literature. The articles show a rich tradition of such works. The broad scope of topics demonstrates diverse literary research. The articles are devoted to defining such terms as "religious literature" and "religious poet", as well as to translations and biblical inspirations, prayers and meditations, monastic authors and their works, hymnals, sermons and the rhetoric, the matter of faith and reason, and a Sarmatian religion. The present issue of "Tematy i Konteksty" ("Themes and Contexts") also includes the papers devoted to interpretation of 19th century literature, reviews, reports and announcements. The authors of studies are scholars from a range of academic institutions in Poland.

Szybko szerzące się i siejące spustoszenie zarazy nie były w dawnej Polsce rzadkością. Ówczesna wiedza medyczna nie potrafiła właściwie wytłumaczyć natury chorób zakaźnych i sposobu ich przenoszenia się, więc pojawiało się wiele różnych teorii objaśniających ich przyczyny. Niektórzy podejrzewali wrogów i niewiernych o zatruwanie powietrza i wody, inni wybuch epidemii przypisywali bożemu gniewowi bądź niefortunnemu układowi ciał niebieskich zwiastującemu nieszczęście. Najbardziej zgubne skutki przypisywano kometom; pojawienie się komety odczytywano bądź to jako znak, bądź jako przyczynę nadciągających katastrof, pośród których poza morowym powietrzem wymieniano trzęsienia ziemi, królewskie zgony, wojny i zamieszki. Astrologiczne wyjaśnienie plag okazało się niezwykle trwałe i stało się powszechnynie występującym motywem piśmiennictwa temu problemowi poświęconego, co nie znaczy, że było akceptowane bez zastrzeżeń.
Rapidly spreading and ravaging diseases were not a rarity in Old Poland. The medical knowledge of the era could not properly explain the nature of infectious diseases and the mechanism of their spreading, so there were many different attempts at explaining their causes. Some suspected their enemies and infidels of poisoning air and water; others attributed pestilence to God’s wrath or to unfavourable configurations of heavenly bodies that were said to bring misfortune. The most devastating effects were attributed to comets; a comet’s appearance was seen either as a sign or as a cause of impending disasters, which, apart from pestilent air, included earthquakes, deaths of kings, wars, and tumults. Astrological explanation of the plagues proved to be very persistent and became a stock motif in the literature devoted to the subject, which, however, does not mean that it was accepted without criticism.

Prezentowane studium zawiera obszerne omówienie monografii Iwony Węgrzyn W świecie powieści Henryka Rzewuskiego (Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, Kraków 2012, ss. 386). Przywołana autorka zajmuje się w swojej książce zapomnianą i słabo zbadaną twórczością Henryka Rzewuskiego. Zauważa, że przez wiele lat twórczość ta była odrzucana ze względu na kontrowersyjne poglądy polityczne pisarza. Autorka odnosi się krytycznie do związanych z tym stereotypów. Szczegółowo analizuje poszczególne utwory, próbując zrozumieć dokonywane przez Rzewuskiego wybory polityczne, ideowe oraz artystyczne. Ukazuje go jako twórcę oryginalnego, myślącego odmiennie niż większość pisarzy jego epoki, ale przez to skazanego na izolację i nierozumienie. Iwona Węgrzyn omawia prawie wszystkie utwory pisarza, szeroko odnosząc się do kontekstów społecznych, politycznych i kulturalnych jego czasu. Wiele miejsca poświęca też funkcjonowaniu Rzewuskiego w ówczesnej społeczności literackiej. Studium Iwony Węgrzyn ma liczne walory poznawcze, cechuje się też wielością podejmowanych problemów oraz wnikliwością dociekań.  
The study proposed here contains a vast elaboration on Iwona Węgrzyn’s monograph entitled "In the World of Henryk Rzewuski Novels" (Jagiellonian University Press, Kraków 2012, 386 pages). The author deals with the forgotten and barely examined oeuvre of Henryk Rzewuski. She notices that, for many years, Rzewuski’s works have been neglected due to his controversial political views. The author treats these stereotypes with criticism and offers an in-depth analysis of the individual works, trying to understand the political, ideological and artistic choices Rzewuski made. The author depicts the count as an original writer, whose line of thinking was very much different from those of the majority of contemporary writers who condemned him to general isolation and incomprehension. Iwona Węgrzyn discusses almost all the works by Rzewuski and relates them to their contemporary social, political and cultural contexts. Much space has been given to the author’s activities in the literary community at that time. The study proposed by Iwona Węgrzyn is very illuminating. It is characterized by a multitude of the issues addressed and by insightful academic investigations.

The article is a review of the book Deutschland und Polenbilder in der Literatur nach 1989 edited by Carsten Gansel and Monika Wolting. In the first part four main assumptions of the volume are described: 1. The presentation of historic transformations in literary texts, 2. The provocative potential of literary texts, 3. The construction of identity in narratives, 4. The construction of symbolic spaces in literary texts. According to these categories the papers of the volumes are examined. Their coherence with the main idea of the volume as well as their methodological foundation are the evaluating criteria of the review.

Anna Frajlich has finally received a decent collection of critical studies concerning her diverse work. Born in 1942, a poet and prose writer, who has been living in the United States for years, should have received such a recognition a long time ago, as she is an intriguing artist and an important personality in the cultural life of Polish refugees. It was fortunate, therefore, that in 2018 th volume „Here I am / inhabit my own life.” Studies and sketches about the work of Anna Frajlich, edited by Wojciech Ligęza and Jolanta Pasterska was published in Kraków .The studies and sketches on the artistry of the author of Indian Summer were collected on 433 pages, the volume contains 31 papers, the collection is well composed. We have received a volume of excellent value that reads well, satisfying the hunger of intellectual curiosity and emotional greed for the voice of the American emigrant’s interpreters. That very important work perfectly fits in the literature on the subject of emigre literature, or in general – on the subject of Polish literature of the twentieth century and after 2000, bringing much needed studies on the writings of Anna Frajlich who is here and lives in our memory.

The article presents the writings of Jakub Susza (Jacob Susha, c. 1610– 1687), the Uniate bishop of Chełm 1652–1687. His most important works: the Latinbiographies of Josaphat Kuntsevych (Cursus vitae et certamen martyrii b. Iosaphat Kuncevicii..., Rome 1665) and Meletius Smotrytsky (Saulus et Paulus Ruthenae Unionis sanguine beati Iosaphat transformatus sive Meletius Smotriscius..., Rome 1666) and the history of the revered icon of Our Lady of Chełm (Phoenix redivivus albo obraz starożytny chełmski Panny i Matki Przenajświętszej, Zamość 1646, Lvov 1653, Zamość 1694), all represent little-known literature written within the Uniate Church. Jakub Susza’s intellectual development, his education in Jesuit colleges in Braniewo, Pultusk and Olomouc, and the characteristic features of his works (the consistent use of Polish and Latin as literary languages, the use of western Latin and Polish literary models) contribute to his image as an example of latinisation and occidentalisation (which at that time meant polonisation) of higher Uniate clergy in the Commonwealth, though as a bishop he took care to preserve the religious identity of the Eastern church.

  The article focuses upon the relation between the realities of faith and reason. The author presents the image of a Christian Stoic, which is typical of Renaissance literature, and goes on to analyze “Żywoty filozofów” [“Lives of the Philosophers”] by Marcin Bielski to describe the structure and specific features of this kind of book on the history of philosophy at the beginning of the 16th century. Referring to medieval tradition (John of Wales, Walter Burleigh), the article shows how the Polish author used it to create the model of a pious sage, distinguished by his love of intellectual, moral and evangelical virtues. The article also refers to two later works, “Wizerunek własny” [“The True Image of the Life of the Honest Man”] by Mikołaj Rej (1558) and “Dyjalog mięsopustny” [“The Dialogue for the Last Days before the Lent”] (c. 1622), which document the continuity of the medieval tradtion of depicting a Christian philosopher.

Głównym zadaniem  artykułu jest przyjrzenie się zjawisku szerszemu niż epidemia, tj. problemowi zła, które w literaturze staropolskiej badać można na różne sposoby. Jednym z nich jest podjęcie analizy w kontekście obecnej i bardzo wyraźnej w naszej literaturze dawnej tradycji platońskiej, augustyńskiej i manichejskiej, w których za zło we wszechświecie odpowiedzialna jest materia (ciało) bądź zły duch zdolny swoją mocą przeciwstawić się Bogu i zburzyć właściwy (czyli dobry, pożądany przez człowieka) porządek  rzeczy. Innym powszechnym w staropolszczyźnie nurtem był neostoicyzm i (w mniejszym stopniu) neoepikureizm, gdzie zło, uznawano za pozór możliwy do unicestwienia przez wspieranego siłą Niebios człowieka mądrego. Zło można również badać, kierując się podziałem na zło natury (cierpienie, niedola, zaraza, śmierć) czy zło moralne korelatywne wobec moralnego dobra. Bardzo interesującą perspektywę wyjaśniania zła, przedstawia teodycea zmierzająca do wyjaśnienia, skąd się bierze zło, zwłaszcza w postaci niezawinionego cierpienia, w rzeczywistości stworzonej przez dobrego Boga.  Ten problem w artykule został pokazany na przykładzie poezji Jana Kochanowskiego  i młodszego od niego o prawie sto lat Stanisława Herakliusza Lubomirskiego. Obydwaj autorzy przyjmują, że Bóg może usunąć zło ze wszechświata, ale nie chce. Przyczyny tego „nie chce” wyłożone zostały w szczegółowej interpretacji.
The article discusses the old Polish ways of explaining evil. The firstpart briefly presents the philosophical theories struggling with the problem of itsexistence and origin: Aristotelianism, Platonism, Stoicism and Epicureanism. Itwas found that the reception of these views can be traced in selected texts of the oldPolish literature. Therefore, in the second and third parts of the article, appropriateanalyses were carried out on the basis of the literary material provided by Elegia IV 3and the epigram O żywocie ludzkim (I 101) by Jan Kochanowski, as well as Tobiaszwyzwolony and Adverbia moralia by Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski. They focusprimarily on the problem of suffering leading to the question of the essence of God,who, being the omnipotent Creator of the world, is also responsible for the presenceof evil in it. Using the Epicurean theory of indifferent deities, Kochanowski presents,close to deism, the concept of the Creator acting for Himself and from heaven viewingHis work with the Artist’s eye; Lubomirski, on the other hand, stands on the side oftheism and assumes that God is the Creator of good, and that evil only allows thewise man to achieve perfection with His help.

Juliusz Nowak-Dłużewski (31 III 1893 - 19 IV 1972), historyk literatury, absolwent filologii polskiej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, uczeń i doktorant prof. Ignacego Chrzanowskiego, nauczyciel Gimnazjum Jana Zamoyskiego w Warszawie, a podczas II wojny światowej organizator i wykładowca filii kieleckiej Tajnego Uniwersytetu Ziem Zachodnich – po pięknych zasługach w powojennym ratowaniu bibliotek dworskich i dzieł sztuki współtworzył Muzeum Świętokrzyskie i Bibliotekę Wojewódzką w Kielcach. W 1951 r. habilitował się u prof. Konrada Górskiego w Toruniu, obejmując stanowisko zastępcy profesora KUL, a następnie od roku akad. 1956/57 – profesora nadzwyczajnego Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. W stolicy witali go bardzo serdecznie dawni jego uczniowie. „Kochał bardzo młodzież i dobrze ją rozumiał” – napisze potem z oddali emigracyjnej prof. Wiesław Strzałkowski, żołnierz PSZ na Zachodzie, lecz przede wszystkim poeta, z nabożeństwem dedykujący Profesorowi własne wiersze. W 1962 roku, gdy Nowak-Dłużewski, powołując seminarium doktoranckie, podjął „świętą wojnę” z ostracyzmem komunistycznym, garnęli się doń przybysze z całego kraju. Gdyby nie przyjął pomocy Instytutu Wydawniczego „PAX” ze strony przedwojennych uczniów, byłby jako badacz narażony na intelektualny niebyt. Dwukrotnie wzmocniły go Nagrody im. Włodzimierza Pietrzaka (1964, 1967). Czytelnikom dał się poznać odkrywczym opus vitae, 6-tomową syntezą „Okolicznościowa poezja polityczna w Polsce” (1963-1980). Wychował grono doktorów, ucząc ich wiary i nadziei, a także odporności na ciśnienie obcej ideologii. O tych niełatwych latach – i o wspólnym zwycięstwie – pisze jeden z nich.
Juliusz Nowak-Dłużewski (31.03.1893, Goszcza – 19.04.1972, Warszawa), a literary scholar and historian, a teacher in secondary schools in Kielce and Warszawa. He did Polish Studies and his PhD in 1932 at the Jagiellonian University in the care of his promoter, Professor Ignacy Chrzanowski. During World War II he lectured at Kielce branch of Polish Studies of University of Western Lands. After the war he habilitated in Toruń on the basis of his monograph dedicated to priest Stanisław Konarski, afterwards, he took a job as a substitute for a Professor at Catholic University of Lublin and as an associate professor at University of Warsaw. His teaching and pedagogic service bore fruit in 1938 in the form of the Gold Cross of Merits. Post-war frameworks of reconstruction and the effort of the preservation from destruction of post-courtly collections from the position of the director of the National Museum in Kielce resulted in the Order of Polonia Restituta (1963). Finally, Nowak-Dłużewski’s research and development works met with recognition from the jury of the Włodzimierz Pietrzak Literary Award two times (1964, 1967). The memoir dedicated to Professor J. Nowak-Dłużewski develops from his student’s conviction about the perfection of his didactic and educational mission performed by him with devotion during the difficult times when Communism was on the rampage. We experienced Professor’s special care and foresight in the last decade of his life (1962-1972), when he resolved to “remake us into angels” by destining us for creative work in conditions close to monastic closure – in the team of a PhD seminary. A doubtless protagonist of the given text is our Master, Professor Juliusz Nowak-Dłużewski. For this reason, the references include only articles and utterances of particular people with the intention of underlining our interpersonal master-pupils bond. To my mind, this aspect appears to excuse the author in the eyes of Colleagues as well as Readers.

The article is a review of the book by Agnieszka Kuniczuk-Trzcinowicz, Sienkiewicza talent i intuicja. Studia i szkice [Talent and Intuition of Sienkiewicz. Studies and Sketches], published in Opole in 2014. The publication is an interesting example of analysis of relations between popular literary conventions and the works by Sienkiewicz. According to the reviewer, the essential merit of the book is the ambitious comparative idea – conventions of popular literature are observed not only in the novels by Henryk Sienkiewicz, but also in other 19th century works that belong to the canon of high literature.

  The article is concerned with the handwritten cycle of poems "Głosy piąci zmysłów" [“Speeches of Five Senses”], that comes from the 2nd half of the 17th century. The text is part of a codex containing other rhetorical exercises by students of the Jesuit college in Orsza (Belarus). "Głosy piąci zmysłów" develop the issue of the Eucharistic mystery – voices of the five senses try to explore this problem and the Mind is their leader. But it turns out that four senses – eyesight, taste, the senses of touch and of smell – have failed. Only hearing can prove that the truth about this sacrament was revealed in the words of Christ and the saints. The hardest task is to believe them.
