    Zofia Romanowiczowa (1922-2010) was a Polish writer and culture promotor, living in France. The devoted to her monograph authored by Arkadiusz Morawiec is of documentary nature. The book consists of three parts: a biographical note, a discussion of Romanowiczowa’s books’ reception and an extensive bibliography. Morawiec not reviews the views of other scholars, but also refers to the facts found in the source documents, to which he provides his own commentary.

    The report summarizes the International Academic Conference ‘Literature of Both Americas II’ (‘Literatura Obu Ameryk II’) which was held by the Faculty of Philology of the University of Silesia (Katowice) from 17 to 19 November 2014. It was the second conference of the series, which this time took place in picturesque Wisła and gathered researchers of migrant literature from both Poland and abroad. The multitude and variety of research areas presented not only supported their multidimensional exploration, but also once again showed that the issue of migrant literature in historical and literary research is reaching ever-widening circles. The conference in Wisła presented both a panoramic and detailed account of Polish literature in Canada and the United States, but still it paid attention to the need for focusing on the less explored issue of Polish literature in Latin and South America.

    Born at the beginning of the 20th century, the popular Polish writer and captain of the Polish Merchant Marine, Karol Olgierd Borchardt, belonged to a generation brought up on the literary work of Henryk Sienkiewicz. Potop was Borchardt’s favourite novel, and Sienkiewicz his most acknowledged writer. Recalling his sailing at sea, especially in the novels Znaczy kapitan (1961) and Szaman morski (1985), Borchardt eagerly and frequently made references to characters and events from Trylogia. Even in his unfinished book of childhood memories, Pod czerwoną różą (1991), published posthumously, while telling a family anecdote, Borchardt made references to Kiemlicze, known from Potop. One may say that Borchardt remained faithful to Sienkiewicz for the rest of his life, invariably con amore referring to and citing the works of Sienkiewicz.

    Opis:
    The paper attempts to form a subjective judgment of literary events taking place in Poland after 1990. The author shares his observations on the literary works of Polish prose writers (Pilch, Karpowicz, Kuczok) focusing the reader’s attention on Joanna Bator’s novel Ciemno, prawie noc. The language of artistic expression becomes the main point of reference. On the basis of the analysis of these two prose works we put forward a thesis that post-Gombrowiczan language: the language of derision, grotesque, baroque elaborateness, has lost its popularity and now it is covering the reality rather than uncovering it. In turn, at the other extreme one may find Andrzej Stasiuk’s Opowieści galicyjskie. These are texts, narrations and stories which are suitable for reading; they can either delight or outrage. They stand on their own merits, so they do not need excessive analyses which interfere with the pleasure of reading.

    References to the work of H. Sienkiewicz in the work of M. Pruszkowska (1910–1973) appear in two of her novels: Prześlę panu list i klucz (I Will Send You a Letter and a Key) (1959) and Życie nie jest romansem, ale… (Life Is not a Love Affair, but…) (1964). The former depicts the fate of a book-loving Warsaw family in the 1930s. The parents and two daughters constantly use quotations in their conversations, which come from their favourite novels, most often from the Trilogy. The sisters make their lives theatrical by impersonating literary characters and competing in the best possible knowledge of Sienkiewicz’s texts. The other novel shows the same family during the Second World War. In the conditions of occupation, references to the favourite fragments of the Nobel Prize winner’s works often gain new and surprising significance. The literary excitement of Pruszkowska’s characters is analogous to the experiences of successive generations of Polish readers.

    The article discusses the most common among Polish translators of the weird fiction by Howard Phillips Lovecraft conventional models and translation techniques. The proposed classification of such models, aimed at either „popularization”, „stereotypization” or „revision” of Lovecraft’s short stories, presents the impact of extra-textual factors (vision of the writer, target group of readers, cultural and political influences) on content, language and style of translated works by the American author. The comparative analysis provided takes into consideration one of the early short stories by Lovecraft, Dagon (written in 1917, published: 1919), and its Polish versions by Arnold Mostowicz (1973), Robert Lipski (1994) and Maciej Płaza (2012).

    The paper is divided into three parts. In the first one the most popular contexts of the research of the migrant literature are named: the actual debate about consequences of migrant policy and the figure of the author. In the second part three central metaphors in the novels of Erpenbeck, Khider and Köhlmeier are presented. These metaphors of exile are: disturbed time, lost life story, incomprehensible language. The third part contains an overview of the reception of the novels in Germany. The conventions of reading focus first of all on the two aforementioned non-fictional references (political context and author) without taking the metaphorical power of the texts into account. Thus the new migrant literature tends to become an equivalent for journalism and is read literally as a testimony of the author.

    It is a fact that, since the turning point of 1989, there has been a discussion on the face of new prose. A specialist in literature, a critic and a reader face two main questions: what kind of prose it is and how to read it. In the long term, in turn, questions concerning the ‘trend’ and the quest for new prose arise. In order to attempt to answer these questions, one needs to pay attention to the causes and source/sources of the changes which can be found ‘outside’ the literature, and which are related to cultural, psychological, social and sociological transpositions. It is also important to determine the degree and direction of writing dependent on them. The authors of the papers gathered in this volume have portrayed a wide panorama of new prose and paid attention to both promising and less sparkling debuts. They have focused on the transformations of Polish prose, its aesthetic, ethical and cognitive values.

    Artykuł koncentruje się na krytycznej recepcji poezji Ewy Lipskiej we Włoszech. Uwzględnia tomy przetłumaczone przez Marinę Ciccarini (2013, 2017), Paolo Statuti (2014), a także przetłumaczone wiersze, które ukazały się w czasopismach literackich (Marco Bruno, 2019). Analizowany materiał zawiera komentarze włoskich krytyków literackich do Lipskiej publikowane w prasie i internecie. Artykuł pokazuje, jak przetłumaczona wcześniej poezja Wisławy Szymborskiej i jej sukces we Włoszech wpłynął na sposób postrzegania Lipskiej w krytycznym odbiorze. W analizie uwzględniono także czynniki redakcyjne, takie jak rola wydawcy w rozpowszechnianiu i odbiorze poezji zagranicznej.
    The article focuses on the critical reception of Ewa Lipska’s poetry in Italy. It takes into consideration the volumes translated by Marina Ciccarini (2013, 2017), Paolo Statuti (2014), as well as the translated poems that appeared in literary magazines (Marco Bruno, 2019). The analyzed material includes the commentaries on Lipska by Italian literary critics published in newspapers and on the Internet. The article presents how the previously translated Wisława Szymborska’s poetry and its success in Italy has influenced the way in which Lipska is perceived in critical reception. The analysis takes into consideration also editorial factors such as the role of the publisher in the diffusion and perception of foreign poetry.

Carls poddaje refleksji nie tylko metody i tryby pracy przekładowej dotyczące bezpośredniego transferu tekstu źródłowego w wariant docelowy, ale także odnosi się do zagadnień wykorzystania w procesie przekładu języka pośredniczącego, współpracy z autorem oryginału lub innymi tłumaczami oraz wykorzystania wiedzy historyka na potrzeby pracy translatorskiej, uwzględniając również postępujący współcześnie trend do silnej profesjonalizacji działalności tłumaczeniowej, Carls charakteryzuje przekład poezji jako nieuchronne poszukiwanie równowagi między językowymi, kulturowymi, wizualnymi, dźwiękowymi i rytmicznymi wektorami tekstu, gdyż „nie istnieją doskonałe odpowiedzi na pytania, jak bardzo tłumaczenie powinno być tworzeniem wiersza na nowo lub jak bardzo powinno podążać za literą oryginału: jest to zawsze kwestia decyzji dopasowanej do konkretnego przypadku”.

    Tematem artykułu jest powieść Marii Krüger (1904-1999) Godzina pąsowej róży (1960 r.) jako przyklad utworu epickiego z fabułą opartą na motywie podróży w czasie oraz jej adaptacja – film Haliny Bielińskiej Godzina pąsowej róży (1963 r.). Omówiono walory rozrywkowe książki i filmu. Zwrócono uwagę na ich wartości edukacyjne - kształcące i wychowawcze. Skupiono się też stronie estetycznej dzieła Bielińskiej. Uwzględniono zagadnienie recepcji medialnej i literaturoznawczej pierwowzoru literackiego, a także recepcji medialnej filmu. Podjęto kwestię odbioru powieści i jej adaptacji wśród czytelników oraz widzów.
    The subject of the article is the novel by Maria Krüger (1904-1999) Godzina pąsowej róży (1960) as an example of an epic work with a plot based on the theme of time travel and its adaptation - Halina Bielińska's film Godzina pąsowej róży (1963). The entertainment values of the book and the film were discussed. Attention was paid to their educational values - educating and upbringing. The aesthetic side of Bielińska's work was also focused on. The issue of the media and literary research reception of the literary prototype as well as the media reception of the film was taken into account. The issue of the novel's reception and its adaptation among readers and viewers was raised.

    The article is a review of Another Canon: The Polish Nineteenth-Century Novel in World Context, edited by Grażyna Borkowska and Lidia Wiśniewska, published in 2020 by Lit Verlag, Switzerland within the Polonistik im Kontext series. The first part of the monograph includes articles that provide a reinterpretation of selected novels (including Krasicki’s The Adventures of Mr. Nickolas Wisdom, Orzeszkowa’s On the Niemen, and Sienkiewicz’s Without Dogma) in relation to the main currents of world literature. The second part focuses on the reception of selected nineteenth-century Polish novels in Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, France, Spain, the United States, and Great Britain. The publication is aimed at raising the interest of non-Polish recipients in the nineteenth-century novels during a period when twentieth and contemporary Polish literature has already gained relative popularity abroad.
    Artykuł jest recenzją monografii wieloautorskiej wydanej w 2020 r. przez szwajcarskie wydawnictwo LIT w ramach serii Polonistik im Kontext, poświęconej recepcji polskiej powieści dziewiętnastowiecznej za granicą. Autorami artykułów są poloniści związani z zagranicznymi ośrodkami akademickim. Pierwsza część zawiera współczesne analizy wybranych powieści (m.in. Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki Ignacego Krasickiego, Nad Niemnem Elizy Orzeszkowej i Bez dogmatu Henryka Sienkiewicza) prowadzone w kontekście współistniejących nurtów literatury światowej. Artykuły zawarte w części drugiej dotyczą recepcji wybranych powieści w takich krajach, jak Białoruś, Bułgaria, Gruzja, Rosja, Hiszpania, Francja, Wielka Brytania i Stany Zjednoczone. Celem monografii jest zainteresowanie obcojęzycznych literaturoznawców polską powieścią dziewiętnastowieczną, w czasach, gdy dwudziestowieczna i współczesna literatura polska zyskała już za granicą znaczącą popularność.

    Zaprezentowane w tym numerze pisma zagadnienia obejmują wiele zjawisk teoretycznoliterackich, kulturowych, językowych, socjologicznych. Wskazują również na nazwiska twórców literatury polskiej oraz ich tłumaczy, którzy współtworzyli (lub współtworzą) obraz literatury polskiej poza granicami kraju. Ogląd zaproponowanych zjawisk związanych z przekładem dzieł polskiej literatury oraz jej recepcją za granicą z pewnością nie wyczerpuje problemu, ale pokładamy nadzieję, że sprzyjać będzie pogłębionej refleksji nad rolą i znaczeniem translacji, a także próbom diagnozy przyszłości działań przekładoznawczych.
    Interest in reception of Polish literature translated into foreign languages has increased in recent years among not only academic researchers but also publishers, literary critics and readers as well. Both successes of contemporary Polishwriters abroad and the endeavors of cultural institutions aimed at promotion of Polish literature in other countries inspire discussions centered on the issue of selection and adaptation of the most representative, unique and/or attractive for foreign readers texts, originally written in Polish. The tenth issue of „Tematy i Konteksty” also addresses these questions, collecting papers focused, among others, on modern translator’s cultural role and status, standard or unconventional techniques andmethods applied in literary translation, particular transfers of various artistic texts from Polish into other languages and modes of their reception within target cultures. Articles collected in the volume answer numerous questions related, for instance, to the ways in which foreign readers respond to writings by Polish authors or to the fields of discourse texts of Polish origin enter as an effect of the set of translational transformations. These transformations result from a variety of factors, such as translator’s idea of equivalence, his/her professional and social position, editorial strategies or even detailed choices of lexical items crucial for the preconceived meaning of the text. The articles discussing and analyzing such issues unveil the secret of supralocal successes of certain Polish writers and clearly indicate the importance of translator’s work for their achievements.

    Film Joanny Kos – Krauze i Krzysztofa Krauzego Papusza z 2013 r. należy do głównych osiągnięć w najnowszej historii polskiego kina. Twórcy podjęli temat trudny dla Polaków i Romów. Odnieśli się do negatywnego obrazu społeczności romskiej. Zajęli się popularyzacją artystki, nie akceptowanej przez większość rodaków. Jest to pierwszy polski film w języku romskim. Część dialogów nagrano po polsku. Dzieło wzbudziło duże zainteresowanie wśród widzów kinowych, telewidzów, internautów i odbiorców płyt DVD. Papusza ma dosyć bogatą literaturę. Nie podjęto jednak zagadnień naukowych, jakie stanowią recepcja medialna dzieła J. Kos-Krauze i K. Krauzego oraz jego odbiór społeczny.W artykule zostanie omówiona prasowa i metamedialna internetowa recepcja Papuszy, w tym kwestia odbioru tego filmu przez widzów.
    The film by Joanna Kos - Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze Papusza from 2013 is one of the main achievements in the recent history of Polish cinema. The creators took up a difficult topic for Poles and Roma. They referred to the negative image of the Roma community. They took up the popularization of the artist, not accepted by most compatriots.  The work aroused great interest among  viewers. Papusza has quite rich literature. However, the scientific issues that constitute the media reception of the work of J. Kos-Krauze and K. Krauze and its public reception were not undertaken. The article will discuss the press and metamedial internet reception of Papusza, including the issue of how this film will be received by viewers.

    Opis:
    Literatura niemieckojęzyczna jest obecna w polskiej rzeczywistości literackiej od dawna z różną intensywnością. Obecność taką stymulują i umożliwiają tłumaczenia tekstów na język polski, bo wówczas dostępne są one szerokiej publiczności, przede wszystkim tej, która nie posługuje się językiem niemieckim. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiona została nieobecność literatury postenerdowskiej, tzn. tej literatury, która powstawała już po upadku NRD i zjednoczeniu Niemiec i charakteryzowała się przede wszystkim skupieniem na sprawach byłej NRD, jej idealizacji czy krytycznej obserwacji aż po nostalgiczne wspomnienia z dzieciństwa i młodości. Autor konstatuje, że po roku 1989 literatura taka jest dość skąpo reprezentowana na polskim rynku wydawniczym, mimo że tłumacze i wydawcy zadbali w ostatnim ćwierćwieczu, by literatura niemieckojęzyczna docierała do polskiego czytelnika. Jednakże opisywany tu nurt literacki jest rzeczywiście mało reprezentatywny w polskiej w przestrzeni wydawniczej. W artykule zostaje podjęta próba wskazania tekstów, które zasługują na to, by w całości być dostępnymi w polskiej wersji językowej. Chodzi tu o autorów takich jak: Christa Wolf, Hermann Kant i Thomas Brussig. Cała trójka reprezentuje różny rodzaj pisarstwa, różne pokolenia, zaangażowanie oraz estetykę. Co jest dla nich wspólne w kontekście nieobecności w polskich przekładach, to fakt, że swoimi książkami (Wolf – Was bleibt, Kant – Der Abspann, Brussig – Helden wie wir) wykreowali pewne wydarzenia, postawy i dyskusje. I dla lepszego i pełniejszego zrozumienia specyfiki dzisiejszych Niemiec Wschodnich przez Polaków poznanie także tych aspektów ma ogromne znaczenie.
    German literature has been present in Polish cultural reality for a long time − although with variable popularity − due to the translations that produced Polish versions available for wider audience, including readers unfamiliar with German language. Yet, the article discusses a branch of German literature still absent in Poland – the so-called Post-GDR Literature, written after the fall of the German Democratic Republic and the German reunification. The Post-GDR Literature addresses a variety of issues related to the GDR, idealizes or critically describesits reality often perceived by writers as the reality of their childhood or youth. The author of the article takes into consideration the fact that on Polish book market after 1989 this literature is almost unavailable despite numerous efforts of translators and publishers and their initiatives aimed at popularization of German literature in Poland. Thus, the article subsequently discusses texts (Was bleibt by Christa Wolf, Der Abspannby Hermann Kant and Heldenwiewir by Thomas Brussig) significant enough to deserve unabridged Polish versions. The three writers represent different genres, aesthetics, generations and level of involvement in political activity. Nonetheless, their works all inspired crucial discussions, attitudes or events and are therefore of vital importance for Polish readers willing to fully understand the reality of Eastern Germany and the impact of its legacy on current times.
