An Espresso-Coffee Machine supplies water which temperature must be confined within a narrow range in different operating conditions; this requires an accurate design at the component as well as the system level. In the present paper we develop a mathematical model to analyse the performances of the heating circuit of such a machine; our aim is to capture the main operating characteristics of the system with the maximum of simplicity. The governing equations of the model have been solved with the finite difference technique, and the first results have been compared with some experimental data.

In the article we consider the two-dimensional heat equation in a circular domain where the thermal diffusivity is a piecewise constant function in the radial directon and is a constant function in the angular direction. In particular we consider the problem of computation of a perturbation in this stratified medium having some information/knowledge about the temperature on the boundary of the domain due to heat flux applied to the same boundary. A linearized version of this inverse problem is considered and a linear integral equation is used for the numerical solution of the inverse problem. Some numerical examples are reported.

An application of parallel computation capabilities in the MATLAB language for the analysis of experimental data concerning the heat transfer coefficient on ribbed walls is presented in this paper. A description of the experimental study, mathematical model and numerical implementation is also given. The obtained results of measurements and calculations shown here clearly indicate the influence of ribbed walls on the heat transfer coefficient distribution in an internal, subsonic flow.

Opis:
This paper discusses a numerical model of the heat dissipation processes in an electrical transformer dipped into polymerised resin. The transformer is cooled by both natural convection (via the ambient air) and forced convection (via the water cooling system attached to one of the transformer casing walls). Two cases have been compared, i.e. the cooler connected to the bottom or the top wall of the transformer container, respectively. In order to improve the modelling of the natural convection problem, an independent geometrical model of the surrounding air was created and considered separately. The continuity of temperature and heat flux along the interface between the transformer and air was enforced by an iterative procedure. This procedure allowed one to calculate and then prescribe local heat fluxes to the external walls of the transformer. The numerical results obtained in this project have yielded information on the efficiency of the analysed cooling system.

The work presents an application of the boundary element method applied to a two-dimensional conductive heat transfer. The algorithm of the method is explained and its advantages are outlined. Green’s function as a fundamental solution for Poisson’s equation in two dimension was used and the direct approach was applied. The presented results concern building construction elements as typical cases of thermal bridges. Some properties of the boundary element method which give new possibilities were considered. For instance, forcing selected values of temperature on inner edges of the considered domain or local increasing of the temperature field resolution. The simulations were performed with the author’s own algorithm.

Opis:
This article deals with the turbulent transition phenomenon modelling and its influence on heat transfer. The purpose of the analyses was to verify the transition modelling implemented in the ANSYS CFX 11 commercial code for popular test cases (low flow speed) described in literature, and then use it for verification of the in-house CFD code (created for compressible flows). The inhouse CFD code has been extended lately for the Conjugate Heat Transfer modelling (CHT) as well, taking into account important flow effects, especially the turbulent transition. A Wilcox k-omega turbulence model with the Low-Reynolds modification was used in the in-house code. The calculations in ANSYS CFX were made using an SST turbulence model and a gamma-theta transition model. A fully turbulent flow was modelled by means of both codes, and the results were compared with the available experimental data. Then, the turbulent transition for several test cases was analysed with ANSYS CFX. Afterwards, the in-house CFD code was verified by means of ANSYS CFX for a higher flow speed (Mach numbers). The CHT modelling was analysed by means of both codes and the results were compared and discussed. The conducted analyses show that the results obtained by means of both codes are comparable, but the turbulence model used in the in-house CFD code is simpler and requires less computation time. A modification of two equations turbulence models can be an alternative for design problems in more developed laminar/turbulent flows.

Selected results of mathematical modelling and computer simulation of transient conjugate heat transfer in a vertical contraflow glass furnace regenerator are reported. The problem is solved three-dimensionally (3D) using the ANSYS 8.0/FLOTRAN program. The main regenerator fluid flow and thermal fields about a cyclic equilibrium of the regenerator are visualized. Heat and fluid flow parameters for the regenerator's cyclic equilibrium are presented by Tm=Tm(H',t); Tm,f=Tm,f(H',t); hm=hm(H',t); V=V(H',t); k=k(H',t) and ε=ε(H',t) graphics. Remarks about transient heat transfer in this kind of regenerators are made based on the obtained numerical values and relationships.

The paper presents the capabilities of open-source programs used for numerical simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena. These tools are applied for unsteady problems with natural convection and, in particular, the heating of an automotive headlight. To perform these studies, a solver was created using an open-source C++ library OpenFOAM. The implementation problems encountered were, inter alia, dealing with multi-domain computation and coupling of sub-domains. The presented simulation results clearly show that open-source software can readily be applied also to engineering problems and can compete with commercial packages.

A capillary pumped loop (CPL) is a two-phase thermal control device applied in cooling electronic devices. A two-dimensional conjugate numerical model of a miniature flat-plate capillary evaporator is presented in order to describe liquid and vapor flow, heat transfer and phase change in the porous wick structure, liquid flow and heat transfer in the compensation cavity and heat transfer in the vapor grooves and the metallic wall. The entire evaporator is solved with the SIMPLE algorithm as a conjugate problem. The shape and location of the vapor-liquid interface inside the wick are calculated, and a side wall effect heat transfer limit is introduced to estimate the evaporator's heat transport capability. The influence of various wall materials on the evaporator's performance is discussed in detail. The results suggest that an evaporator with a combined wall is capable of dissipating high heat flux and stabilizing the temperature of electronic devices at a moderate temperature level.

Opis:
The free convection heat transfer from an isothermal vertical plate in open space is investigated theoretically. In contrast to conventional approaches we use neither boundary layer nor self-similarity concepts. We base on expansion of the fields of velocity and temperature in a Taylor Series in x coordinate with coefficients being functions of the vertical coordinate (y). In the minimal version of the theory we restrict ourselves by cubic approximation for both functions. The Navier-Stokes and Fourier-Kirchhoff equations that describe the phenomenon give links between coefficient functions of y that after exclusion leads to the ordinary differential equation of forth order (of the Mittag-Leffleur type). Such construction implies four boundary conditions for a solution of this equation while the links between the coefficients need two extra conditions. All the conditions are chosen on the basis of the experience usual for free convection. The choice allows us to express all the theory parameters as functions of the Rayleigh number and the temperature difference. To support the conformity of the theory we derive the Nusselt-Rayleigh numbers relation that has the traditional form. The solution in the form of velocity and temperature profiles is evaluated and illustrated for air by examples of plots of data.

A new algorithm is presented for evaluating the velocity field of the heat convection flow from a vertical solid flat plate using the temperature field. Using the coordinate transformation of Cartesian coordinates, to coordinates defined via streamlines, and visible in such coordinate approximations, it is possible to express the basic flow fields in terms of the temperature gradients only. After discretization we formulate approximated sufficient finite-difference formulas to evaluate the velocity field using the experimental data.
