Opis:
Spontaneuos combustion (or self-ignition) is the initiation of the burning process without an external source of ignition, such as a flame or spark. This phenomenon often occurs during storage of such substances as hay, straw as well as coal or culm. Like any other type of fire, in addition to potential material losses, it also poses a threat to people. Thanks to the systematic monitoring of landfills using a thermal imaging camera, the dangerous effects of this phenomenon can be avoided. The article presents photos taken on a coal storage site where, as a result of both prolonged heat and wind exposition, a self-ignition phenomenon occurred that was detected early due to the use of thermovision.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the basic strategies for counteracting threats that are used in an industrial work environment, with particular emphasis on strategies based on the concept of safety barriers. The article presents the main categories of safety barriers and the basic safety functions implemented within the key barrier systems. In addition, the most commonly used criteria for assessing safety barrier systems as well as safety functions are presented. The most characteristic examples in this regard are given. The analysis was carried out in terms of the implementation of barrier management towards reducing the risk of adverse events in the industrial work environment.

The article presents the issues of product safety management in enterprises managed in accordance with the Lean Management concept. The Lean Management concept is aimed at limiting or even completely excluding all forms of waste by intensifying and stimulating continuous improvement. One of the ways to reduce waste is to minimize waste and production shortages that arise due to failures in meeting the product safety requirements, quality criteria for a specific product. In addition, good practices in product safety in Lean organizations will be shown, which show the care for the safety of the products offered. On the basis of research, the following will be presented in the article: a general approach to product safety and detection of production deficiencies, as well as the autor’s original proposal for a system ensuring the safety of manufactured products.

In a knowledge-based economy, innovation resulting from R & D activities and subsequent management of their legal safety are of particular importance. Incorrect patent law can lead to abuse in the area of innovation security on a large scale through the activities of the NPE organization (patent trolls). This phenomenon is particularly noticeable in the US while in the EU it is at a negligible level. The aim of the article is to demonstrate and prove by using comparative literature and documents analysis of US and EU, that inappropriate law leads to violations of innovation safety through the unhampered activity of patent trolls, while a change of the law to more restrictive law is a right step to reduce the patent trolling. On the other hand, the author proves that in an area with a less liberal definition of patentability, there are no many violations of innovation safety through patent trolling.

The aim of the work is to review the basic methods of accident analysis in terms of the possibility of using them to improve occupational safety management. Analyzing accident events is a very good way to obtain information on the practical functioning of OSH management. Although the analysis of accidents and near misses is included in the reactive activities, the changes that will be introduced as a result of this analysis are the most proactive. These irregularities can be related to all elements and aspects of the functioning of the organization from the technical, organizational, human, environmental and management side, and the accident analysis helps to identify them. The paper reviews and characterizes the basic methods of accident analysis, with particular emphasis on accidents at work. Moreover, the basic classification criteria and the main guidelines for the selection of these methods are presented in such a way that they can be effectively used to improve the OSH management system.

In the paper the risks to which the patient is exposed while receiving a medical service have been analyzed. All treatments related to blood collection from the patient deserve much attention. It consists of a number of principles and procedures regarding the patient's health safety as well as safety of a person providing this service. Prevention and preventive actions in the aspect of patient safety in the face of threats resulting from the nature of medical services provided are a priority. Due to preventive action it is possible to avoid the effects of exposure to biological hazards, including the possibility of becoming infected with HIV, HCV and HBV. In the paper the results of a questionnaire survey carried out in selected blood stations of the Śląskie Voivodeship have been presented. The questionnaire is able to collect the information about patient awareness on the risks of the medical service (blood collection).

Opis:
The need of ensure the safety in the realised industrial processes results directly from their negative influence both on environment and workers’ health, and, as a result - the associated material losses. Safety management must be based on the risk management, results of which are the basis of risk acceptability assessment and taking action of the systemic character directed on risk minimisation. Those actions should guarantee technical condition of the used technological installations and monitoring and control equipment as well as organisational solutions, which in the effective manner are going to minimise the probability of occurrence of environmental and occupational accidents, and - in the case of their occurrence - minimise the influences. Therefore research on the practical solutions of process safety assurance, both in the regular conditions of work and in the time of the emergency are of the crucial meaning. That is why the value of the paper is being constituted by the authorial model of operational control, which aim is to guarantee the process safety from the perspective of the both: technical and occupational safety. The worked out model is the systemic tool giving the guidelines of operational management and allowing for the homogeneous management in the range of environmental safety and occupational safety and on the basis of - being the fundamental element of the model - risk management. The worked out model can be implemented in case of any organisation which wants to assure the safety of the realised processes by risk and system management.

The strategy should be designed in such a way as the risk management can operate not only as a system for avoiding losses, but also risk management should allow recognizing and making use of occasions and create new opportunities for the organization. Risk management includes both an evaluation (analytical and evaluation) undertaking as well as planning and control activities aimed at minimizing (reducing) risk or maintaining it at an acceptable level. Security management can in particular be reduced to the issue of risk management, because risk is a quantitative expression of the functioning of systems in an environment where there are active sources of threats to system security. The article presents the problem of personnel allocation in hazardous conditions, emphasizing the possibilities of undertaking optimization actions in the safety management process. A mathematical model was formulated for this issue. An algorithm solving the problem of personnel allocation is presented. The proposed analysis is the starting point for determining the risk when using multi-station work.

The article analyzes the safety aspects related to the construction and operation of a mobile crane. The load-bearing capacity of the boom sub-assembly rotation node was tested in a mobile crane. When identifying the load, the uneven compliance of the supporting components was taken into account. The considerations are illustrated with an example of a mobile crane slewing bearing with a lifting capacity of 50 tons. The basic problems of building the computational model are discussed and the results of the load bearing capacity of the slewing ring bearing for different positions of the load-bearing component of the tested machine are presented. An analysis of the load of the rolling elements in a slewing ring bearing was carried out and the reasons for changes in the load capacity in relation to the methods of calculating the load capacity, assuming non-deformability of the bearing rings, were indicated. It has been shown that deformations of the supporting frames are so large that they significantly change the distribution of forces transmitted by individual bearing rollers.

Opis:
Power engineering is one of the key areas of sustainable development. Many countries create new concepts of environmental safety management and modify their energy systems to be in line with the goals of sustainable development in the EU. Sustainable development indicators can be a tool for monitoring the set goals of environmental safety management. The aim of the article is to assess the environmental safety management of the energy sector in Poland in relation to EU as well as presenting the concept of sustainable energy development and indicators used to assess the development of energy in the following dimensions: social, economic and ecological. The indicators used to assess the sustainable development of energy in the following dimensions were compared: sustainable consumption and production, marking the production and consumption of energy; organizations and sites with eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS); registration climate change, marking GHG emissions and the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption; sustainable transport, marking the energy consumption of transport relative to GDP. The article will test the hypothesis that the structure of obtaining energy in Poland and the tempo of change in this respect differ from the EU average.
