Opis:
Evaluation of the forest landscape diversity was investigated based on the multispectral aerial images using iterative Principal Component Analysis (PCA) methodology. In 2014, we carried out several photogrammetric flights over the experimental plots establish in the Krotoszyn Plateau (central Poland) documenting the vegetation cycle of forest stands dominated by oaks. Aerial photos of the spatial resolution about 25 cm of forest area in Karczma Borowa Forest District in the range of visible light (460−650 nm) and near infrared (700−930 nm) were collected by multispectral Quercus 6 platform placed on the aircraft. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diversity of forest vegetation cover using remote sensing data based on spectral signatures of plants without complete classification of fractional vegetation cover and species identification in the field. Recursive PCA on data collection from the multispectral images helped to determine with the semi−automatic mode the number of land cover classes, including the classes of vegetation. Based on the radiometric data, the separation of inorganic matter from vegetation and diversity indicators of forest stands on the image area were evaluated. With the PCA method, along the most volatile vectors, the first division into land cover classes of vegetation was conducted. As a result of the first iteration of PCA, three classes of vegetation: deciduous trees, conifers and forest undergrowth was determined. In the second iteration, classes of forest vegetation were separated and interpreted as the area dominated by a single species of tree or shrub. The second iteration divided the deciduous plant image area in plots dominated by English oak stands with an admixture of birch and red oak. Based on the number of pixels in classes representing individual plant species, Shannon−Wiener (H) and Simpson (D) diversity indices were determined. By described methodology, it was found that the differences between the H and D indices for the imagery area after the first and second PCA iteration were small. The relevance of performing successive iterations of PCA analysis, and thus the full identification of species, in the context of diversity calculation should be the subject of further study.

Opis:
Despite constant advances in geostatistics and its many succesful applications in remote sensing and forestry, it remains a relatively unknown field in Poland. The main aim of this paper is to show applicability of various geostatistical techniques in estimation of inventory measures and biophysical parameters of forests. We show examples of practical applications without going into the complex theoretical bases of the described methods. We also present a wide selection of the most important papers in the subject.

Opis:
Inventory of the growing stock in the territory of the Milicz Forest District was made using the combined, two−phase method. 1980 sample plots were measured on aerial photographs that constituted Phase I of the inventory. Phase II sampling consisted of 267 ground (permanent) plots and corresponding airphoto plots depending on their location in the photograph. In the airphoto sample plots, the following characteristics were measured (or controlled): tree height and age, degree of crown cover, species composition. Taking into consideration the relationship between the results of standing volume measurements on ground sample plots and stand characteristics on airphotos, the growing stock in age sub−classes and in the entire Forest District was calculated. Using aerial photography in forest survey and growing stock inventory, the cost of forest management planning operations is likely to be comparable to the cost of such operations performed in the traditional way.

Opis:
On the basis of historical and recent cadastral maps, topographic maps, and aerial photographs, we analysed changes in forest area within the cadastral units of Karpniki village, in the Karpnicki Potok (SW Poland). In 1823−2012, forest area increased there from about 41% to over 57% of the total area. The greatest increase has been recorded recently. Moreover, at that time over 16% of land classified officially as farmland was naturally colonized by communities dominated by woody plants. This seminatural process in the analysed case does not pose any serious threat to natural resources, but a complete lack of its control may lead to deterioration of the value of the local landscape and development of low−quality forest stands. The observed changes seem to be typical of other areas located in lower parts of the Sudety Mountains.

Opis:
Recent research show that image−derived point clouds (IPC) can be successfully utilized in the context of estimation of selected forest parameters. However there are still some topics for further investigation in the context of using archival data. Particularly, in case of forest stands in Poland the number of such studies is limited. This study investigates the usefulness of airborne IPC for estimation of Lorey's height (H), basal area (G) and growing stock volume (V) of Scots pine stands. Additionally, the accuracy of predictive models is analyzed for images acquired in the same year as the field reference data were collected (2015) and for archival images acquired in 2012. The study was performed in Janów Lubelski Forest District (south−eastern Poland) on approximately 7,800 ha. The measurements from 94 circular plots were used as the reference data. The Area Based Approach and multiple linear regression were used to create predictive models. For each analyzed dependent variable variety of IPC characteristics were evaluated to select the most accurate predictive models. The best model for each variable was selected based on Akaike Information Criteria and RMSE. The same predictor variables were used for both years of aerial images aquisition. For models comparison the one−sided bootstrap test was used. The RMSPE for H, G and V in case of images acquired in 2015 amounted to 5.3, 16.3 and 17.3%, respectively. Analogically, the relationship between predicted and observed values (R2) amounted to 0.96, 0.47 and 0.81. The finally selected models had three, one and two predictors for H, G and V, respectively. The difference between accuracy of models based on aerial images from 2012 and 2015 was not statistically significant for all analyzed variables. The obtained results show high potential of using airborne image−derived point clouds for forest inventory activities in Scots pine dominated stands.
