Physical and chemical properties of biochar from wood biomass indicate that it can be a valuable supplement to nursery substrates, mainly to improve sorption capacity as well as nutrient and water retention. The paper presents the results of a pilot experiment on the impact of biochar on the moisture content of peat moss substrate and its retention properties. The experiment was carried out in the autumn of 2017 at the Soil Water and Environmental Science laboratory at the University of Arizona, Tucson (USA). 15 cubic decimeter of peat substrate with grain size 2 mm and 0.70 kg biochar, with the same grain size, obtained as a result of pyrolysis (450−500°C) from Pinus ponderosa Dougl. Ex C.Lawson branches. The experimental series consisted of 25 black PP containers with a volume of 265 cm3 (5 replicates) filled with peat moss (control sample PM) and a mixture of peat and biochar in 10% (PMB10), 20% (PMB20), 30% (PMB30) and 50% (PMB50) share. After soaking of mixture, most of the water was retained by 50% and 30% peat samples with biochar, followed by samples in which the proportion of biochar was 20% and 10% respectively. The least water was retained by the sample with the pure peat moss substrate (PM) – on average 76.5 g which is 255.3% of the initial weight After 96 hours the water losses were the highest in the pure peat moss samples (44.2%), while the smallest were noted in PMB30 and PMB50 samples (fig. 2b). The favourable properties of the peat and biochar mixture in the range of moisture parameters were observed. In the PWB10 series, the average moisture was 5.2% higher than the peat sample, in the PWB20 the average humidity was 7.9% higher than the PM sample, in the PWB30 and PWB50 series the differences were larger: 15.0% and 14.2% respectively (fig. 4). The significant variation in physical parameters between the individual series was confirmed as well as the assumption of variance uniformity (tab. 3, fig. 4).

Opis:
Wood obtained from freshly cut trees has a high moisture content and therefore its mass per volume unit is higher than the mass of dry wood. The natural drying is a simple and effective method of weight (moisture content) reduction, making a better use of the vehicle's payload, and thus reducing costs, including environmental costs. The conclusion is based on simulations and analyzes attempting to evaluate different solutions. As evidenced, the drying process of logs depends on numerous factors, which entails attempts at development of an optimal logging method, especially concerning energy wood, allowing for maximum value growth in as little time as possible. The suggestions cover various forms of logging (of whole trees, long timber), arranging (in piles, bundles), storing (in stands, by the roadside near cutting areas), and protection. Combined methods such as storing under canvas for winter only or storing in cutting areas and later in piles at the exit road also work in practice, but require more funds because their cost is determined by the number of stages composing the whole process. In case of wood, development of an optimal and simultaneously universal method used to prepare the lumber for transport and its delivery with consideration of as little environmental impact as possible is complicated. The numerous variables, some of which cannot be controlled or affected, create a considerable scientific problem as well. The authors covered in the presented literature review often stress the role of specific weather conditions accompanying an experiment or its location, the storage method, or lumber dimensions in the drying process. Storage time is perceived as equally important, but it is a derivative more or less determined by the previous variables. Previous studies of drying at the cutting area have been focused mainly on energy wood and less on industrial wood. They analysed the results of long−term storage and did not stress the potential advantages of short−term drying. Furthermore, we do not have sufficient information on species, including forest trees, which have a lower share in the volume of the logged wood. Advanced research can help establish the minimum mass (moisture content) with considerable impact on supply chain effectiveness improvement or evaluated various storing and drying methods. We reviewed reports explaining the impact of various factors on natural drying of wood, models and storage effects, and analyzing potential economic and environmental benefits.

Opis:
Transformation of the natural environment of human life may have different speed, depending on the number of conditions, especially the climate. There is a long−term transformation, but also the sudden changes, often having for humans the nature of disaster. An example of sudden and undesirable changes in the environment are observed in form of movements of soil on the slopes of the mountain. One of the environmental factors that determine the slope stability is the current soil moisture. Its sudden increase caused by heavy rain or spring thaw can significantly change soil physical conditions and triger landslides. Water saturation may also occur in soils of these areas, to which water from the road drainage devices flows. The aim of the study is to determine the spatial distribution of soil moisture in the outlet of the drainage facilities for forest roads in the context of changes in selected soil characteristics affecting the possibility of landslides. We selected two culverts and two open top culverts that drain the forest road in Gorce National Park. The most important for the observations was to determine the spatial distribution of soil moisture and soil moisture differences in selected locations of an outlet of the road drainage facilities in relation to the place of outlet and the unit drain line. In the analysis of measurement results, there was no significant difference between the average humidity clustered according to ‘position' and by the ‘line'. The significance of this was obtained for the average moisture grouped according to ‘depth'. This can be explained by the impermeability of land and a large decrease in the slopes in the area of research. In general, rather small soil moisture fluctuations, despite the variability of rainfall, in conjunction with significant fraction of skeleton particles, do not create conditions conducive to the formation of landslides.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the rate of mineralization of needles in a pine stand in relation to site and to microbiological conditions occurring on dune slopes of contrasting aspects. The research was conducted in the old−growth pine forest overgrowing a latitudinally located dune in the Bydgoska Forest (N Poland). On contrasting dune slopes (northern and southern) rate of mineralization of pine needles was investigated in the 2−years experiment (2012−2014) with the litterbag method. Besides, following investigations were conducted in the middle part of both slopes: 1. dynamics of soil moisture and soil temperature were measured at a depth of 3 cm for 18 days during the 2013 growing season (interval of 2 weeks was applied) and 2. populations of bacteria and fungi were determined for all subhorizons of organic soil horizon (Ol, Of, Oh) as well as for a mineral horizon (AEs) of both soils. Weight loss of needles was found to be higher on northern than on a southern slope what was consequently stated for all 4 terms of taking measurements (6, 12, 18 and 24 months after placement of litterbags). The discrepancy has increased with time and after 2 years it equaled 14.7% when the loss was 61.1% for northern and 46.4% for a southern slope. It could be surprising that such differences were found in spite a sunny slope was characterized by stated in a study higher soil temperature. It should have a stimulating effect on mineralization of organic material; however a soil located on a southern slope was also found as much drier. Thus, the periodic deficiency of soil moisture was indicated as a limiting factor for occurrence of both bacteria and fungi on a southern slope due to the numbers of both groups of microorganisms were much lower on the slope than on a northern aspect. Conditioned by more favourable site parameters, higher number of microbial population occurring on a shadow slope could explain higher rate of mineralization of needles stated for the slope aspect. The moisture factor can be of especially high significance for microbial occurrence and activity and thus for litter decomposition just in dry inland dune ecosystems. It was concluded that in relatively monotonous pine forests overgrowing dry and poor in nutrients soils of inland dunes the slope aspect is an agent significantly differentiating both site and soil microbial conditions.

Opis:
This study was carried out in the Słowiński National Park (SNP; northern Poland) in Scots pine forest stands. The aim of the research was to compare the accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese in needles of pines growing on in dry (Bs), fresh (Bw) and moist (Bw) habitats. The age of needles, soil moisture and the content of examined components in the soil were taken into account. Needles and soil samples were collected in September from 15 sites (Bs – 5, Bśw – 3, Bw – 7). The nitrogen was determined with Kiejdahl method, and the phosphorus by the molybdate method after digestion in the mixture of 98% H2SO4 and 30% H2O2. The content of K, Mg, Ca, Zn, Ni, Fe and Mn was assessed by atomic absorption spectrometry after digestion in the mixture of 65% HNO3 and 30% H2O2. The soils of SNP, developed from deep dune sands, were very poor in nutrients. The highest amounts of macro− and micronutrients were found in organic and humic levels. In mineral levels, the content of the ingredients decreased rapidly and in many cases was beyond the limit of determination. Extreme nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiency was found in analysed needles, together with adequate amounts of magnesium, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese as well as an excess of calcium. Differences in the nutritional state of Scots pine in investigated habitats were apparent primarily in the sum of the components accumulated in the needles. Needles accumulated in total from 736.5 to 850.7 mmolc/kg of nutrients, with macronutrients ranging from 98.6 to 99.1%. The accumulation of macro− and micronutrients in the examined needles decreased in the series Bśw>Bw>Bs. Mn and Fe showed the largest share in the micronutrient pool. Zn and Ni were significantly less common. The comparison of the accumulation of macro− and micronutrients in the needles indicated that stands on Bśw have slightly better conditions for development under unfavourable soil and climatic conditions prevailing in the Łeba Spit than those in Bs and Bw habitats.
