Opis:
Data on sex structure and growth of the population is crucial for proper game management. Camera traps, which are of reasonably low cost, but very efficient, can potentially measure the aforementioned parameters. The paper objectives was to assess the share of bucks, does and calves in red deer Cervus elaphus population in the area of the Białowieża Forest. Two methods were used: camera traps and a traditional method of all−year−round observations. The study was conducted in the years 2011−2015 in three forest districts and the Białowieża National Park. Reconyx trail cameras were exposed in one location for approximately 30 days, then moved to a new place. Altogether, trail cameras were exposed in 761 spots, at least 500 m apart one from another. Analyses were based on material collected between June 1st to September 31st when sex and age identification were the most reliable and hunting season had yet not started. Additionally, all−year−round observations of animals were done by foresters and scientists in the whole forest area, species, sex and age were noted in the special forms. The number of observers was similar to that of exposed trail cameras. Sex and age structure of red deer population changed between years, but according to both methods does were more numerous than bucks. According to trail cameras, share of bucks was on average 42 vs. 32% (data for all years combined), and a population growth was 39−60 calves/100 does, depending on a year. According to all−year−round observation, share of bucks was 26%, of does 53% and there were 37 calves/100 does. The dominance of does over bucks is difficult to explain as the sex structure at birth is 1:1. The does are more susceptible to predation and are culled more often. As data from trail cameras showed lower disproportion, we may assume that those results were more reliable. Trail cameras can collect data all the time, regardless the season, time of a day and weather conditions. Pictures can be analysed in details and observations verified if necessary. Their biggest disadvantage is price (especially when we assume that all−year−round observations can be done as a part of work duties by forest service), and risk of theft or damage.

Opis:
We analysed 7 territories of the nightjar located in the Puławy Forest District (eastern Poland). Density of the breeding population on the studied area was 0.88 territory/km². The smallest territory covered 4.5 ha, while the biggest one – 18.7 ha (average 13 ha). Birds were found in a loose birch and pine forest, in the plantation and nearby the working railway. Significant differences in open area contribution and in share of undergrowth and brushwood were found between analysed territories and random patches. Greater biodiversity was found in places chosen by birds.

Opis:
Study analysis the influence of selected factors on the size of tawny owl Strix aluco territories in the forests of Lublin region. The survey was held in years 2005 and 2006 using the voice stimulation. The territory area was determined using Minimum Convex Polygon method. 43 territories with the average size of 18.8 ha were set on 26 study sites. The largest territory was found for birds during laying and incubation period (102.6 ha) and during after−breeding period (98.3 ha). Significant differences in territory size was found depending on the breeding density (high density – average territory size of 5.1 ha, low density – 26.9 ha). The average territory area in winter was 1.5 ha (range 1−2.7 ha), in spring 20.8 ha (1−102.6 ha), in summer 10.8 ha (1−65.5 ha) and in autumn 30.9 ha (1−98.3 ha).

Opis:
The number of wild boars considerably increased in Poland at the beginning of the 21st century. We tested hypotheses that both the level of wild boar populations and rate of the increase in their numbers in Poland in the years 1999−2014 were dependent on some landscape factors, i.e. forest cover, crop field size and maize occurrence. Hunting bag was used as an index of wild boar abundance. The mean hunting bag of this species in the initial and final part of the study period was positively related to the forest cover and the mean size of farms (as an index of crop field size). In the final years also the occurrence of maize showed a positive effect (tab.). However, the index of wild boar bag growth rate decreased with the forest cover and the farm size. Higher increase in wild boar abundance occurred in regions characterized by lower forests share and fragmented crop fields, where the density of investigated species were lower than in regions with the mosaic of forests and large crop fields. The occurrence of maize significantly affected the growth rate index only in north−eastern part of the country (fig.). Our analysis showed that some evolution in wild boar – landscape relations took place in the recent period. Such changes may lead to an increase in conflicts with agricultural economy caused by this species.
