Opis:
The paper presents a multifaceted structure of timber harvest in 2008−2015 in the Białowieża, Browsk and Hajnówka forest districts located in the Białowieża Forest. The object of the research, including the Białowieża National Park being a remnant of the primeval forests, is considered one of the most valuable forest areas of natural origin in Europe. The studies were made on the basis of the data from the reports created by the State Forests Information System and forest management plans, as well as the nature conservation programs of the surveyed forest districts. In the analysed period, a total of 665,032.5 m3 of merchantable timber was harvested in the analysed area. The highest volume of merchantable timber was harvested in the Browsk Forest District – 305,934 m3 (46%), then in the Hajnówka Forest District – 219,300 m3 (33%), with the lowest volume harvested in the Białowieża Forest District 139,788 m3 (21%). Among the individual assortment groups, the medium−sized timber was the most common and its harvested volume amounted to 413,579 m3, while the harvested volume of large−sized timber amounted to 251,454 m3. The lowest harvested volume concerned the small−sized timber and amounted to 21,652 m3. In the analysed period, softwood had the largest share in timber harvest and amounted to 443,469 m3. Hardwood was obtained in the volume of 243,215 m3. According to the cutting category, the timber harvest structure was as follows: the highest volume was harvested in pre− commercial thinning 382,495 m3 (54%), that from incidental felling amounted to 251,003 m3 (38%), while the lowest volume of harvested timber was from final cutting – 53,186 m3 (8%). Forest districts located in the Białowieża Forest encounter many difficulties affecting timber harvest. The main reason for this lies in the numerous restrictions imposed on the management of areas covered by various forms of nature protection, including the exclusion of some habitats, or stands of 100 years of age and older from management, which significantly affects the yield. The lack of a determined rotation age for stands in the Białowieża Forest also has a significant impact on timber harvest.

Opis:
In spite of the growing importance of the protective and social functions of forests, their productive function, including production of raw wood with a diversified assortment structure, is still prominent. Changes in the assortment structure depend to a large extent on tree species, habitat conditions and intensity of tending treatments. However, for the temporal organization of forest management, it is essential to recognize the dynamics of these changes in relation to stand age. The paper contains an analysis of quantitative and qualitative changes in the assortment structure of the Ist site index pine stands in the Wilcze Bagno Forest Compartment (Pisz Forest District), depending on the length of the primary production of standing timber. Data from 10 forest stands similar in terms of habitat, stand density and anagement treatments were taken for analysis. These stands form a homologous series ranging in age between 40 and 130 years.

Opis:
The qualitative and dimensional variability of wood material affects its possible uses for industrial purposes. Attempts to order the rules of raw material classification contributed to the introduction of qualitative and dimensional standards approved by the Polish Committee for Standardization. Large−size softwood is the main raw timber material in Poland. The adjustment of requirements and rules of raw material sorting to changing market needs was caused by the necessity of prompt reaction to technological changes. Although standards were adjusted to the EU requirements, the State Forests National Forest Holding creates the rules of large−size wood classification through the corporation legal acts – the ordinances of the General Director. The article presents the beginning of the process of large−size softwood trade standardization in Poland. It indicates the rationality of meeting the requirements of qualitative, dimensional and purpose−related classification in the era of rapid changes in the demand of the industry. After the rebirth of the Polish state, there were attempts to improve rational use of wood. This goal was achieved by introduction of the rules of assortment classification for available forms of material. Verification of wood structure defects and properties in selection of large−size assortments resulted in consecutive amendments facilitating the procedures of selection of adequate quality and thickness classes in large−size wood. This enabled gradual adjustment of assortment classification to the needs of the wood industry, which is the recipient of wood material. Due to the increasing dynamics of changes it was necessary to develop new forms of wood division and classification. The role of product standards was gradually taken over by technical conditions developed by the State Forests, which is in charge of major material resources in Poland. This form of verification of the principles of wood division and classification guarantees prompt adjustment to the needs of clients on the wood market, which are changing at an increasing rate.

Opis:
The research concerned the implementation of tasks in the field of harvesting timber in 2008−2012 in pure pine stands aged 10−140. Numerical data from the SILP database were used for calculating the average price of timber in the intermediate harvest. The data on the volume harvested covered late cleaning, early thinning and late thinning. The assortment structure concerned the following groups of large− (WA0, WA1, WB0, WB1, WC0, WC1 and WD), medium− (S10, S11, S2A, S2B, S3A, S3B and S4) as well as small−sized (M1 and M2) assortment groups. The data on the size and value of wood assortments sold across the country concerned the year 2011 and were used to calculate the average price of wood in age subclasses according to the site quality described with site index class. Subsequently, for each site quality class polynomial equations of the trend line was determined and average timber price for each age subclass was calculated for small−, medium− and large−sized assortments. The analysis showed that S2 is the most frequently harvested assortment in the intermediate cuts in Scots pine stands, whose share depending on the site quality class is at the level of 65.7−72.7% of total harvest. The share of small−sized assortments decreases with age in all site quality classes. The opposite tendency is seen for large−sized assortments, whose share decreases with the deterioration of the site quality. Fraction of medium−sized assortments reaches its peak at the age of ca 45 in IA site index class and the shift in the peak with age is associated with the deterioration of the site quality. The higher the site quality, the higher the prices of assortments in the intermediate harvest. This trend occurs in all age subclasses.

The structure of timber sales in forest districts of the Białowieża Forest in the years 2008−2015 is presented. The Białowieża Forest is one of the most valuable natural areas in Europe. The data from the reports generated by the State Forests Information System of the Hajnówka, Browsk and Białowieża forest districts were used for the research. The information contained in the forest management plans and nature conservation programs of the surveyed forest districts was also used. The volume of the sold merchantable timber in the Białowieża Forest amounted to 669,072 m3, of which 63.43% was softwood and 36.57% hardwood. Among the softwood assortment, sales of the large−sized timber amounted to 44.42%, while of the medium−sized timber to 55.58%. For the large−sized hardwood, the share of sales amounted to 30.66%, while for the medium−sized hardwood to 69.34%. The small−sized timber was sold at 22,389 m3, with the share of hardwood assortments being 82%, and of softwood 18%. A small share in the sales of small−sized timber is caused by the lack of FSC certification by forest districts, which excludes large industrial companies that buy predominantly the medium−sized coniferous timber assortments. The average price obtained from the sale of timber in the the Białowieża Forest in the analysed period was 134.7 PLN/m3. At a price higher than the average, wood was sold in the Białowieża and Hajnówka forest districts, while in the Browsk Forest District the timber was sold at a price lower than the average. The total volume of merchantable timber harvested in the forest districts of the Białowieża Forest in the analysed years, including the small−sized timber, amounted to 686,684 m3, with 691,461 m3 of timber being sold. The volume of the merchantable timber sold at that time was 669,072 m3, which constituted only 0.24% of the total timber sold at the State Forests in Poland.

Opis:
Poland has rather rigorous regulations concerning forest tree seed zones. The high commercial quality of the coastal (northern) and upland (southern) beech provenances has stipulated the need to verify their performance also in the central Poland as possible quality seed source. A trail consisting of three open pollinated half−sib provenances has been established in Forest Experimental Station in Rogów in the year 1963. After the stand had reached the age of 44 years, a prognosis has been made focused on assessing the final age assortment structure of particular trees. The results show that the local population is at present the poorest and it is expected to produce the lowest wood quality in the mature stand. It is concluded that, following the results of 44 years, both the upland beech and – first of all – the coastal beech are due to their excellent performance potentially valuable seed source for the central Poland.
