Opis:
The missing data on bulk density make impossible the calculations of soil water retention, organic carbon pools and evaluation of the numerical indices of soil and forest habitat fertility and potential productivity. A common reason of skipping of bulk density measurement is the high content of rock fragments in soil, in particular in the subsoil layers, that may hamper the collection of samples with undisturbed soil structure. The aim of present study was to analyse the relationships between bulk density and basic properties of mountain soils, where the problem of high skeleton content is relatively common, selection of the properties of the largest impact on the soil bulk density, and the fitting of the mathematical model (equation) that allows the prediction of soil bulk density at the highest available statistical significance. Forest soils in the Sudeten Mountains and the Sudeten Foreland, SW Poland (total number of samples N=580), situated on various bedrocks (granite, basalts, gneiss, mica schists, sandstones, mudstones, etc.) were selected to analysis. It was found in those soils featured by large variability of soil texture (the range of clay content 0−40%), skeleton content (0−74%), and organic carbon content (0.09−50%) in the soil profile, that the bulk density (having the values 0.10−1.87 g/cm3 in mineral layers and 0.04−0.58 g/cm3 in organic/litter layers) was individually correlated with the organic carbon content, skeleton content, clay content, and the depth of sampling (depth of particular soil layer), but the multifactor analysis has shown, that the organic carbon content has the highest impact on the bulk density and the organic carbon alone is sufficient for reliable prediction of soil bulk density. The best fitting of the measured and predicted bulk densities (R2=0.83) was provided by ‘dose−response’ Hill model: dv=1.72–[(2.36·Corg0.6)/(13.80.6+Corg0.6)], that returned dv values between 0.10 and 1.72 g/cm3 in a range of Corg content between 50 and 0%.

Forest bed layer developing in a tree stand plays a very important part in functioning of forest ecosystem and is of key importance in soil carbon accumulation. In two different study objects (Niedźwiady and Tuczno), 351 forest bed thickness measurements were taken in 117 pine stands of different age classes, separating them into those growing on forest lands (28 tree stands – 84 measurements) and those on post−agricultural ones (89 tree stands – 27 measurements). The above relationships were analysed, what showed a relation between the thickness of forest bed and the age of tree stand. Forest bed thickness increases together with tree stand age, both on forest and post−agricultural soils.

Opis:
Comparative studies on the content and profile distribution patterns of phosphorus fractions in arable and forest Cambic Chernozems were conducted near the village Báb (western Slovakia). Soil samples were collected from every 10 cm and analyzed using standard procedures in soil science. Long term differences in the type of the studied soils usage were reflected in their physical and chemical properties (bulk density, porosity, acidity, the total content of organic carbon and nitrogen), as well as in the content and profile distribution patterns of phosphorus fractions. Total phosphorus content ranged from 498.8 to 754.7 mg/kg in arable soil and from 480.4 to 835.9 mg/kg in forest soil. Residual fraction, which constituted 54.9−77.8% of total phosphorus in arable soil and 57.3−79.2% in forest soil, was a predominant fraction. Such large contribution of this fraction is typical for young soils, with weakly weathered mineral substrates. Exchangeable phosphorus in arable soil constituted 0.6−6.1%, while 0.5−3.0% in forest soil, showing decreasing trends with depth in both soils. Free iron oxides and carbonates were important factors influencing profile distribution of phosphorus in the investigated soils. Iron oxides bound the element mainly in acidified horizons, whereas carbonates in alakaline (Bw and C) horizons. Organic fraction significantly differed in the investigated soils. A much larger content and contribution of this fraction in total phosphorus was noticed in forest soil. The content of organic phosphorus was positively related to the content of organic carbon. Stable fraction of organic phosphorus predominated over labile one in both soils.

The correct assessment of the site conditions is the basis of the good management of forest areas. The aim of this study was to find a set of soil properties, which allow separating the diverse sites in terms of the soil productivity. We used 180 locations in the Carpathians and the Sudety Mountains for testing. The study plots were located in transects from the foothills to the top along the slopes, taking into account the variability of site conditions, geological substrate and exposition. The index was calculated on the basis of the content of <0.02 mm particles, the sum of exchangeable base cations, soil acidity and the ratio between total N content and organic C in the humus−mineral horizon. The soil trophic index for mountain areas (SIGg) that include the climatic factor was introduced. The factor is defined as the 650/altitude ratio for a given point above sea level. In the mountains, the content of <0.02 mm fraction, the sum of exchangeable base cations and soil acidity were determined in the column of 1 m² of the soil cross section and depth of 1 m (1 m³ of volume) due to the lower depth of the soil profile. The SIGg correctly separates soil of different productivity as the properties closely associated with the stable elements of the soil, expressing its production and properties, which reflect the current state of the soil environment, were used in the construction SIGg.

The aim of the experiment was to compare the rehabilitating effect of three factors that may improve the degraded and very poor soils formed from loose sands: dolomite liming, use of a multi−component fertilizer with delayed action (Silvamix W) and temporary introduction of an admixture Alnus incana into the Pinus sylvestris plantation. The results of the factorial experiment after 9 years indicate that the soils on which the experiment was established cannot be afforested without prior rehabilitation treatments. The activity of dolomite was most effective while of Silvamix − weaker. Alder survived in the plantation composition only when used in combination with dolomite fertilization, then its rehabilitating effect was apparent. Rehabilitation relying on the use of dolomite at a rate of 2 t/ha in combination with a 50% admixture of alder in the pine plantation is recommended to be used in practice.

The numerical valorisation of soil quality is based on the determination of a set of soil properties adjusted to a given soil function in the ecosystem. The obtaining of an index is based on: determination of soil properties, their conversion into abstract numbers called indicators, index calculation and its practical application. The first proposal of a forest soil quality index was the Forest Soil Trophism Index – ITGL calculated for the soils presented in the Atlas of forest soils in Poland. The calculation of the ITGL was based on the following soil properties: percentage share of very fine sand and coarse silt fraction (Ø 0.1−0.02 mm) and silt and clay particles (Ø <0.02mm), reaction, sum of exchangeable bases and organic matter decomposition degree, content of skeletal parts. Its variability in the forest soils of Poland oscillates between 6.0 and 43.0 and its application in the valorisation of forest sites is multidirectional.

The article assesses the influence of method of revitalisation of the forest fire site in Potrzebowice Forest District (western Poland) on basic parameters of the microbial activity in soils. We investigated study plots established in 1994, two years after the forest had burnt down completely. We applied three different methods of soil preparation and planted either Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) or grey alders (Alnus incana (L.) Moench.). For comparisons an area of natural succession and untreated control plot, which was located beyond the range of the fire, were taken. 18 years after the appli−cation of the methods of renewal of the fire site, the soils have not undergone full microbiological regeneration. The soils at the fire site were mainly colonised by heterotrophic eubacteria. The population of these microorganisms, which were usually found in fresh litter and in the strict rhizosphere, was greater than in the soil of the control plot. On the other hand, there were low populations of actinobacteria, which regenerated poorly, especially at the accumulation and humus levels of the post−fire soils. The population of fungi was also lower than in the control soil. The applied methods of the fire site renewal have not had significant influence on the microbiological state of the soils under investigation. However, the rate of regeneration of the microbiocenosis after the fire in the forest soils was much faster in the case of artificial renewal than in natural succession.

Opis:
The properties of humic substances in gley soils in the first years after afforestation were charac−terized. Study was performed in former meadow soils in Gostynin Forest District (central Poland). Four soil profiles were analysed. It was found that changes of soil organic matter in studied soils were closely associated with hydrologic properties of these soils. Establishment of forest plantation on gley soils greater violated the balance of mineralization and humification processes in mineral−organic soils than in mineral soils. This was reflected in substantial losses of organic carbon (Corg) and total nitrogen (Nog) in the upper layers mineral−organic soils and minor changes of Corg content and Nog in the upper horizons of the mineral soils. Fractional composition of humus was more sensitive indicator of changes than the analysis of the total quantity of carbon and nitrogen. Studies have shown that after afforestation labile compounds were mineralized at first. Transformations of other humus fractions depended on soil subtype. In soils with high initial content of Corg (93.7 g/kg) in addition to the loss of organic matter deterioration of humus quality were also recorded. In the soil of the average initial content of Corg (65.1 g/kg) loss of organic matter was found, but a better quality of humic substances with increased proportion of humic acids was recognized. In soils with the lowest initial content of Corg changes in the amount of organic matter were not statistically significant, but a larger share of humic acids in different humic compounds was evidence of the greater stability after afforestation.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study of changes in the normal volume of absorption capacity of soil skeletons formed from the Magura sandstone in the Beskid Makowski area, and sampled from different genetic horizons. In the field of hydrology, the key issue in assessing the water storage capacity of the soil cover storage reservoir is the water storage capacity of the skeleton part. In the case of mountain soils, the issue of determining water storage capacity seems to be of importance due to the significant share of skeleton fraction in the soil cover. Moreover, the absorption capacity of the skeleton is related to the fraction volume. Soil test pits were executed in the area of Myślenice Forest District (southern Poland), in the habitat of Carpathian beech species Dentario glandulosae−Fagetum, in a stand of fir and spruce Abieti Piceetum. The scope of field work included sampling of 6 test profiles. In each profile, samples were taken from three identified genetic horizons. Sieve analysis method was used to determine the total content of skeleton and fine earth, and percentage share of each fraction. For each skeleton fractions, normal absorption capacity and bulk density were found. An important, supplementary part of the study was the isolation of fine−grained and coarse sandstone in each sample. After such processing, the collected material was compared with the material remaining after the successive stages of soil skeleton abrasion (weathering) in an aqueous medium, according to methodological assumptions. A device was used to perform this stage of the study. Changes in water storage capacity were mainly considered taking into account the fraction size and the location depth in a soil profile (without specifying the thickness changes). Differences were found between the absorption capacity of skeleton occurring naturally in the soil, and water absorption capacity of skeleton devoid of the outer layer of detritus as a result of the abrasion method. Water storage capacity values were decreasing after each successive step of the experimental run, along with increasing fraction size and the depth of their position in the profile. Preliminary results showed that the changes of absorption capacity are more strongly correlated with size of the fraction than with position in a genetic horizon.

The paper describes the fractional composition and optical properties of humus of soils developed on postmining areas reclaimed for forest use. The examined humus samples were characterised by high degree of humification, significant content of carbon bound in humin and fulvic acid structures and high optical density of humin acids. Significant correlation was found between humus qualitative properties and the fine fraction content (silt and clay) and absorbing complex properties of the soil. However, the humus properties were varied significantly and the features useful for the natural soil humus classification did not allow for clear classification of post−mining soil humus.

Opis:
The morphology and properties of the post−arable soils that influence the trophic status of forest habitats on the Barycz river terraces (south−western Poland) were analyzed. The fieldwork included the characterization of the soil, tree layer, and the vegetation of the forest floor, as required for the forest habitat evaluation. In the collected soil samples, a set of physico−chemical analysis was carried out, that included: soil texture, bulk density, pH in KCl and water, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, hydrolytic acidity, base cations, and the content of plant−available phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. Sandy post−arable soils in the Barycz valley have a thick, double− or triple−layered ploughed humus horizon, and the high stock of humified organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, that emphasizes anthropogenic transformation of soils and differentiates them from the natural soils of river valleys. The diagnosis based on the soil trophic index (SIG) indicates generally lower trophic status (mesotrophic) as compared to the diagnoses based on forest floor vegetation and tree−stand (eutrophic status). The SIG model for the post−agrar moist valley habitats should be supplemented with the factors, which improve the apparent trophic status of sandy soils, including the thick humus horizon (post−ploughing) and shallow table of eutrophic ground water.
