Opis:
The research covered the application of near−infrared spectroscopy (NIR) to evaluate selected properties of forest soils, necessary to calculate the Soil Trophic Index (SIG). We analyzed 50 samples from 15 study plots located in the Miechów Forest Districts (S Poland). Five plots were established per each variant of the site conditions: upland deciduous forests (Lwyż), upland mixed deciduous forests (LMwyż) and upland mixed coniferous forests (BMwyż). On each plot soil pit was dug out and samples were taken from organic and three mineral (0−10 cm, 10−40 cm and 40−150 cm) horizons. NIR measurements were performed using Antharis II FT spectrometer to assess the following properties of forest soil: the content of organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen (Nt), C:N ratio, the share of fine ø<0.02 mm) fraction, the content of base cations (S) and total acidity (Hh). Based on the 30 spectrums and the identified properties of soils, the calibration model was developed. The validation of the model was performed on independent set of 20 samples. Next, the SIG values were calculated on the basis of laboratory measurements and compared with the values obtained with NIR. Very good calibration results were observed for almost all soil properties (fig. 1, tab.). The highest correlation coefficient was obtained for the C:N ratio. During the validation, the nitrogen content was well estimated, as evidenced by the highest R²W values (tab.). The content of Corg, soil particles ø<0.02 mm and S were also relatively well estimated. The results suggest that the NIR technique can be successfully applied to evaluate the soil properties necessary to calculate SIG. The calculations are made at a much lower cost and in a very rapid way compared to laboratory methods.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to apply the forest soil trophic index (ITGL) in the assessment of post−agricultural soil under naturally regenerated silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) stands. The study was conducted in Mazowieckie region (central Poland) in 10 locations (tab. 1). In each location we established 4 study plots with naturally regenerated silver birch of different age. The age of the investigated stands ranged from 2 to 17 years. On each study plot samples from three upper soil horizons (0−5 cm, 5−15 cm and 15−50 cm) were collected for laboratory analysis. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) content, particle size and the content of exchangeable base cations (Ca, Mg, Na and K). These soil characteristics were on used for ITGL calculation. Chemical properties of soils under silver birch regeneration varied with regard to trees age, whereas physical attributes turned to be rather stabile over the time (tab. 2). According to ITGL value investigated soils were classified as eutrophic. It is probably the effect of high base cations content, which is a result of systematic fertilization during the long term agricultural use. The insignificantly different ITGL values for the studied soils (tab. 3) indicated their similarity in terms of site productivity potential and soil−geological characteristics. The soil properties, especially the quality of soil organic matter described with C/N ratio, improved several years after the cessation of agricultural activity and spontaneous afforestation. The obtained results indicate that silver birch can be used in the stand composition on post−agricultural areas.

On 127 experimental plots were classified into different forest site types according to vegetational criteria, 16 main soil properties were analysed and their content in a 100 × 100 × 150 cm soil lump was calculated. The expert system and the linear discriminant analysis showed different soil properties and their groups enabling stronger or weaker division of the examined sites into forest site types. The content of 0.1−0.02 mm fraction, the content of <0.02 mm fraction, the concentration of H+ ions as pH reaction in H20 and the content of mobile N were pointed to as those which better distinguish coniferous forest (B) from mixed coniferous forest (BM), mixed coniferous forest from mixed broadleaved forest (LM) and mixed broadleaved forest from broadleaved forest (L). The other soil properties in the expert system showed a weaker strength in differentiating the examined sites into different forest site types according to vegetational criteria.

Opis:
The objective of the paper was to estimate i) the carbon accumulation in soils of different forest site types as well as ii) its changes with regard to the depth of the soil profile. The investigation was carried out in the Przedbórz Forest District (central Poland) on 43 study plots, including different forest sites – fresh coniferous forest (Bśw), fresh mixed coniferous forest (BMśw), fresh mixed broadleaved forest (LMśw) and fresh broadleaved forest (Lśw). On each plot soil pits were dug and samples for laboratory analysis were collected. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, the content of organic C and total N, particle−size distribution, the content of exchangeable Ca, Mg, Na and K, and hydrolityc acidity. The obtained results demonstrated that soils of Bśw, BMśw and LMśw sites characterized by higher carbon accumulation in surface horizon to 50 cm depth compared to the most eutrophic sites (Lśw). The rate of carbon accumu− lation in forest soils depend on the humus type which is connected with species composition of stands. Domination of Scots pine in stand affects the formation of ectohumus and leads to higher C accumulation in surface horizons on Bśw, BMśw and LMśw sites. In soils of Bśw, BMśw and LMśw sites carbon stored in the horizons to 50 cm constitutes 64−94% of the total carbon accu− mulated, while on the eutrophic sites (Lśw) this share amounts to 39−72%. The value of the total carbon stock in soils of fresh forest sites can be estimated on the basis of carbon stock in horizons to 50 cm depth.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the impact of selected soil properties on site index of oak (Quercus sp.) stands in the Międzyrzec Forest District (eastern Poland). We utilised data from the soil−habitat survey, which provided information about physical and chemical properties of soils and stand descriptions for 21 oak stands (tab. 1). The collected data served to determine site index (SI), defined as the stand top−height at the age of 100, and soil trophic index (SIG) that is a synthetic measure of the soil fertility. For SI and SIG distributions met the criteria of the normal distribution (Shapiro−Wilk test p−values equalled 0.118 and 0.297, respectively), we applied one−way analysis of variance, t−test and correlation analysis to determine the influence of the forest habitat type and moisture as well as soil properties and fertility measures on the site index of analysed oaks. The SI of investigated oaks ranged from 23.2 to 29.3 m, 26.5 m on average (tab. 2). It was significantly dependent on the site type (F=6.913, p=0.006) with the lowest values on oligotrophic habitat and the highest – on eutrophic one. No effect of habitat moisture content and soil type was found (t=–0.408, p=0.688 and F=2.599, p=0.076, respectively). The SIG values ranged from 20 to 36, with the average of 29.5 (tab. 2). Similarly to the site index, we found significant impact of the forest habitat type (F=5.384, p=0.015) on SIG values. Soil fertility and physical properties significantly influenced site index of the analysed oaks (fig.). We found positive correlation between SI and SIG values (r=0.566, p=0.007) as well as between SI and clay content (r=0.454, p=0.037). Chemical properties of the soils under studied stands seem to have less profound effect on site index of oak. The highest, but insignificant, correlations were found for recalculated acidity (r=–0.420, p=0.056) and magnesium content (r=0.400, p=0.071).

The study deals with the criteria of forest site classification in forest planning taking special consideration of the significance of soils in forest site mapping. The analysis embraced two documents: Site−based principles of silviculture 2004 and Instruction of forest management. Part II. Instruction of differentiating and mapping forest sites 2003. It was pointed out that the soil criteria adopted in these two documents are inconsistent and incomplete and make it impossible for the appraiser to clearly distinguish forest sites on the basis of soil properties.

Opis:
The paper presents the properties of soils of eutrophic fir forest stands in lower montane zone in Beskid Niski and Beskid Sądecki Mts. (southern Poland). Efforts were made to put some order in the issues related to the site system, in which the fir plays a dominant role. The study was conducted in 10 study sites reflecting the living conditions of eutrophic silver fir forest. On each plot the topography conditions were described, soil pit was done and samples for laboratory analysis were taken. We determined the following soil characteristics: pH, the content of C and N, particle size, the contents of Ca, Mg, Na and K, exchangeable acidity, aluminum content and hydrolityc acidity. Additionally, diameter at the breast height and height of firs were measured. Cambisols (Epidystric, Hyperdistric and Eutric) are soils typical for eutrophic fir forest stands. The study confirmed that the eutrophic fir forests occupy mainly moderately cool slopes: north, east and north−east. The eutrophic fir forests prefer the lower parts of the slopes or low hills. Eutrophic nature of the soil occupied by the fir forests confirms the quality of accumulated humus. The mull humus type was found the most frequently. Only in two cases moder humus type was noted. The advantageous properties of humus−mineral horizon reflects decomposition level of organic matter expressed as the proportion C/N (range from 11.2 to 19.1). Particle size of Cambisols of eutrophic fir forest stand was very diverse and was associated with the nature of the parent material. Fertility of the soils was reflected in the trophic soil index for mountain area (SIGg=30−37), which was confirmed by the high site index of these stands.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study of changes in the normal volume of absorption capacity of soil skeletons formed from the Magura sandstone in the Beskid Makowski area, and sampled from different genetic horizons. In the field of hydrology, the key issue in assessing the water storage capacity of the soil cover storage reservoir is the water storage capacity of the skeleton part. In the case of mountain soils, the issue of determining water storage capacity seems to be of importance due to the significant share of skeleton fraction in the soil cover. Moreover, the absorption capacity of the skeleton is related to the fraction volume. Soil test pits were executed in the area of Myślenice Forest District (southern Poland), in the habitat of Carpathian beech species Dentario glandulosae−Fagetum, in a stand of fir and spruce Abieti Piceetum. The scope of field work included sampling of 6 test profiles. In each profile, samples were taken from three identified genetic horizons. Sieve analysis method was used to determine the total content of skeleton and fine earth, and percentage share of each fraction. For each skeleton fractions, normal absorption capacity and bulk density were found. An important, supplementary part of the study was the isolation of fine−grained and coarse sandstone in each sample. After such processing, the collected material was compared with the material remaining after the successive stages of soil skeleton abrasion (weathering) in an aqueous medium, according to methodological assumptions. A device was used to perform this stage of the study. Changes in water storage capacity were mainly considered taking into account the fraction size and the location depth in a soil profile (without specifying the thickness changes). Differences were found between the absorption capacity of skeleton occurring naturally in the soil, and water absorption capacity of skeleton devoid of the outer layer of detritus as a result of the abrasion method. Water storage capacity values were decreasing after each successive step of the experimental run, along with increasing fraction size and the depth of their position in the profile. Preliminary results showed that the changes of absorption capacity are more strongly correlated with size of the fraction than with position in a genetic horizon.

Opis:
The study focused on the influence of several soil properties and forest species composition on spatial distribution of organic carbon stock in soils developed from the contrasted parent materials: Tertiary claystones and sandstones, and Qurternary sands of different origins. Soil sampling was performed on 110 plots, while forest mensuration was conducted on 82 ones. The content of <0.05 mm fraction determined by the type of parent material played a key role in the distribution of carbon stock in soils. Higher content of fine fraction favoured the accumulation in mineral part of soil, while higher sand content had an indirect influence on accumulation of carbon in the organic horizon. Forest species composition and biomass volume are more important for C accumulation in the O horizons. Taking into account the geological heterogeneity, the size of investigation area played a prominent role for the statistical significance of the observed correlations between carbon stocks and the other soil properties.

The aim of this paper is to present the properties of soils and topography conditions of Norway spruce forests growing on the limestone (Polysticho−Piceetum) in the upper part of the lower montane zone. The study was conducted in the Tatra Mts. (southern Poland) on six study plots reflecting the living conditions of spruce forest on limestone. On each plot the topography conditions were described, soil pits were dug and samples for laboratory analysis were collected. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, the content of C and N, particle size, the content of Ca, Mg, Na and K, exchangeable acidity, aluminum content and hydrolityc acidity. For each study plot the stand characteristics were measured (diameter at breast height and height). The Soil Trophic Index for mountain areas (SIGg) was calculated on the basis of <0.02 mm fraction content, the sum of exchangeable base cations, soil acidity and the total content of N and C organic in the humus−mineral horizon. Polysticho−Piceetum stands in the upper part of the lower zone between 1000 and 1200 m above sea level developed in the unique geomorphological and geological conditions. They covered very shallow weathered fragments of limestone or steep slopes with fine−grained scree of carbonate rocks. Rendzic Hyperskeletic Leptosols (Humic) and Calcaric Lithic Leptosol are soils typical for analysed spruce stands. Character of site was reflected in the SIGg values that ranged between 15 and 20. The moder−mull and tangel−mor humus type was found on the majority of the investigated plots. Low fertility of soil was confirmed by the site index of analysed stands (IVth and Vth class).

Opis:
Impact of some chemical soil properties (OC and Nt content as well as C:N ratio in humus horizon; exchangeable cation stocks and base saturation) on site index class of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) was analyzed. The study was conducted in 67 plots, separately on sandy soils of different moisture – non−gleyic (51 plots) and gleyic soils (16). For every soil pit, stocks of particular cations were calculated to the five depths: 25, 50, 100, 150 and 200 cm. The distinct positive impact of N, K and Mg on the pine site index was stated. The strong influence of K was assumed to be caused by the strong effect of potassium on water economy of trees. The positive relation between Ca soil stocks and pine growth was also stated, however, the relation was described to be an indirect one. Probably it reflected the stated clear intercorrelation of Ca with K and Mg content. The only element that was determined as negative correlated to the site index was Na, that was especially distinct when topsoil Na stocks were concerned. The negative correlation was presumed to reflect sodium adverse effect on soil structure, that resulted in decreasing water sorption in topsoil and thus caused less favourable site moisture conditions for pine growth. The results showed that when refer to the soil depth, the strength of the correlation between stocks of particular cations and the pine site index was strictly dependent on soil moisture: on non−gleyic soils, on the contrary to gleyic, the correlation strength was directly proportional to soil thickness taking into consideration in statistical analysis.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of different management treatments of Norway spruce post−harvest logging residues on soil properties. The study compared the impact of residues chipping and arrangement into the stacks. The investigation was carried out in the Nowy Targ Forest District (southern Poland). 15 research plots were selected for the analysis (5 plots with wood chips, 5 with stacks and 5 control ones). In May 2018, on each research plot soil samples for laboratory analysis were collected from the surface horizon (0−10 cm depth). Basic properties (pH, carbon and nitrogen content, base cations content) and enzyme activity (dehydrogenase, urease and−glucosidase) were determined. The obtained results confirm the influence of post−harvest logging residues management on soil properties. The significant differences in soil carbon content between soils of different plots variants were noted. Soils of research plots with wood chips and stacks were characterized by higher content of carbon compared to the control research plots. At the same time soils with post−harvest logging residues had a higher biochemical activity expressed by enzymatic activity. The nutrients released from decaying post−harvest logging residues stimulated the microbiological activity of the soils.

Black cherry (Prunus serotina) was planted in forests in Central Europe in the hope of producing valuable timber and after the first disappointments, in the hope of improving the soils of coniferous plantations. Nevertheless, an unequivocal evaluation of its effect on soil environment is still a controversial issue. The aim of this study was to determine a temporary fluctuation of selected soil properties in Scots pine forest dominated by black cherry. The research was carried out in Wołów Forest Division (SW Poland). Two Scots pine monocultures developed on podzol site with and without P. serotina in shrub layer, were selected for the study. Twelve research plots (10×10 m) were randomly selected on the sites. On each plot the cover of P. serotina in the shrub layer was evaluated and every three months, during single research year (November 2013 − November 2014) soil properties (total N, organic C, soil reaction) were determined in organic (O) and humus (A) horizons. Analysis of variance and PCA procedure demonstrate some significant relationships between P. serotina and soil properties in Scots pine forest. The presence of black cherry contributes to continued changes in the organic horizon expressed by increase in total N (range of average from 1.14 to 1.38%) and drop in C:N ratio (range of average from 22.86 to 25.73). Apart from the spring, increase in pH value in the organic (range of average from 4.03 to 4.58) and humus horizons (range of average from 3.59 to 4.04) was found on the site invaded by black cherry.

Opis:
The main objective of this study was to demonstrate a relationship between the direction and effectiveness of impact of particular tree species on soil properties and the initial site fertility. The studies were conducted on two neighbouring experimental plots with different forest site types (fresh mixed coniferous forest – BMśw and fresh mixed deciduous forest – LMśw). The analysed species Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), European larch (Larix deciduas Mill.), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) and penduculate oak (Quercus robur L.) were planted in three replications on 400 m2 plots. It was stated that: 1) the humification processes ongoing under the canopy of the analysed tree species are, to a large degree, determined by the type of forest site; 2) under the same tree species the content of calcium and nitrogen in the nitrate form was found to by markedly lower in the BMśw forest site; 3) in the BMśw forest site, the pH and electrolytic conductivity of the soil under the majority of the analysed tree species were lower; 4) the degrading impact of coniferous species on soil was noticeably stronger on the poorer BMśw forest site.

Opis:
In this study effects of burrowing by badgers and foxes on forest soil and vegetation were examined. Burrow digging resulted in increasing topsoil alkalinity and changing the availability of some nutrients. Soil disturbances supported higher diversity of herbaceous and woody plants, and favoured the occurrence of fugitive and nutrient demanding species. Badgers had stronger impact on soil and vegetation than foxes.
