Opis:
The capercaillie Tetrao urogallus is a species whose numbers and distribution have been declining for more than 100 years. The average escape distance capercaillie amount to about 30 to 150 metres. However, some birds do not escape but, on the contrary, come closer towards people. The cases of tame and fearless behaviour of capercaillie have been occurring more frequently lately. The hens look for man's company and appear in human settlements, whereas cocks show aggression and attack people, animals or vehicles. The aggression of cocks accompanies the disturbed lekking behaviour. The aggressive cocks were found throughout the all year, yet most frequently during lekking. The fearless behaviour of hen occurs only in spring and recurs in the subsequent years. Disturbances in the behaviour of capercaillies have a physiological basis and are not the manifestation of a synanthropisation of the species. The fearless and aggressive capercaillies constitute about 1% of the population within the range of their distribution. They live in small isolated populations mainly in Central Europe.

The paper presents monitoring results of sawfly (Diprionidae, Hym.) larvae occurrence and changes in abundance in the period of their feeding activity in different pine stands in the years between 2000 and 2002. The presence of larvae in tree crowns was established on the basis of counts of fallen excrements. The mass of fallen excrements and the number of excrement pellets accounted for great differences in abundance of larvae feeding in tree crowns among the successive years. Distinct periods of increased excrements fall were ascertained which corresponded to the peak of the abundance and activity of larvae. They occurred at different times in the successive years probably as a result of differences in the development pattern of two sawfly generations. In the case of high population abundance the excrements fall was more even, thus the limit between the end of the first and the beginning of the second development of the second sawfly generation was not distinct. Parts of stands where larvae were more abundant than in other fragments have been identified.

Opis:
An increase in the abundance of local populations of Hyloicus pinastri L. Lepidoptera, Sphingidae is periodically recorded in many regions of Poland. In the Tuczno Forest District, the occurrences of larvae of this species have been monitored since 1996. The presence of larvae in tree crowns was established from the quantity of falling excrements. The account was taken of the percentage of colonised control trees and the mass of falling excrements. The abundance of larvae in the period of 1996−2002 varied. Since 2000, however, a distinct increase in the percentage of the colonised areas has been noted. In some years, this growth was accompanied by the decline in the amount of falling excrements in individual areas though the general tendency was rising. The likely cause of this decline could be a declining population density due to the expansion of Hyloicus pinastri on other fragments of stands. In 2002, the density of larvae the percentage of the colonised stands was high. This accounts for the dynamic population growth of Hyloicus pinastri in the study area.

The analysis covers the observation period from 1997 to 2007. On the basis of phytosociological relevés a negative effect of such factors as undergrowth overshading and interspecies competition on condition of Genistella sagittalis population was stated. The species demonstrates expansive tendencies in insolated habitats of little undergrowth cover. The population seems to be stabile and is not endangered at present.

Population's ability to pass genetic information to the progeny generation can be expressed through the effective population size. The true number of individuals in a population plays a significant role in ecological sciences however when considering population genetics effective population size is taken into account in the first place. The presented paper is an analysis of the variation in effective number of clones in Scots pine seed orchards in Poland for three organisation levels: plantations, Regional Directorates of State Forests (RDLPs) and jointly for the country. Thus, the effective number of clones calculated for RDLPs and the country informs about the full potential of genetic variation within a given level.

The knowledge on the spatial distribution of pine foliophagous insect populations can be very useful in forecasting and prevention of their mass outbreaks. Checks of the quantities of fallen excrements were considered one of the reliable methods to detect the distribution of larvae in stands. Such checks oriented, in the first place, on the nun moth were performed in the years 1996−2003. The results showed high differences in the density of larvae even over a small forest area. The presence of such stand fragments where the high densities of larvae occurred more frequently than in other stand fragments were confirmed. In the same forest areas, higher densities of larvae of other foliophagous species of pine were also ascertained.

Opis:
The American mink (Neovison vison) is a species that experienced unprecedented ecological success in the 20 th century, which can be seen in both the dynamic increase in its zoogeographical range, and in its effective adaptation to ecological niches in new areas. The driving forces of this phenomenon include intensification and globalization of mink farming, which is accompanied by introduction and rapid spread of the species outside its natural range. The first observations of mink in the wild in Poland took place in the middle of the last century. Within 60 years, American mink colonized almost entire country and the process of invasion and colonization is still ongoing. The high rate of invasion and ecological success achieved by the populations from the introduction is possible due to the high ecological plasticity of American mink, its high reproductive potential, the availability of free ecological niche left by European mink (Mustela lutreola), extinct in many areas, and the frequent lack of natural enemies on the occupied territories. Dynamic geographical spread of allochthonous American mink is associated with a number of very serious ecological problems, primarily through predation, competition and aggression against indigenous fauna, as well as transmission of Aleutian mink disease virus. This results in fact that American mink is regarded as one of most dangerous invasive species in the world. In the absence of practical possibilities of its permanent eradication from Poland, local eradication programs on vulnerable areas (e.g. waterbirds breeding sites), as well as large−scale population size control, promotion of natural enemies and competitors, and improvement of living conditions of its prey−species are most recommended. The most important in monitoring and control programs of alien populations is limitation of farm−animals escapes and recognition of methods for their simple and unambiguous identification. Indisputable determination of the free−ranging animals origin would allow for taking the appropriate actions against owners of the unsafe farms. At the same time, implementation of a holistic and systemic approach to solve the problem of the presence of American mink in the natural environment would help to fulfil Polish obligations resulting from ratified international conventions and EU law.

The analysis of population density indicators and hunting exploitation of brown hare (Lepus europaeus) in the Lublin Upland (eastern Poland) hunting club indicates that these parameters reached low and very low level resulting in the reduction or suspension of hunting acquisition. Analysis of body weight of obtained hares indicates that despite the low density of the species, it does not differ significantly from the value of this parameter in other regions of the country at different levels of population density. Thus, achieved results are confirmation that the population density index does not determine hare body weight. Statistically significant differences in body weight in the group of juveniles and adults regardless of gender were found, and there were no clear and statistically significant differences between males and females, both in the group of juveniles and adults (tab.). Analysis of the age and gender structure among obtained hares (fig. 2 and 3) shows a clear dominance of adult animals, both males and females. These results confirm that in spite of the low population density, the estimated possibilities of the reproductive potential are high, and the cause of a population decline and continued low density are the factors from the outside of the population.

In the paper, an assessment of tree population dynamics in the old−growth stands of the managed part of the Białowieża Forest is presented. Data from five permanent sample plots with a total size of 9.3 ha and six inventories that cover the period 1949−2006, were used. Depending on the dynamic status, determined on the basis of changes in a number of individuals per hectare, basal area and quadratic mean diameter, three major groups of tree species were distinguished: 1) an increasing group, containing only hornbeam and lime; 2) a stable group, involving alder and spruce and 3) a declining group consisting of oak, ash, maple, pine, birch, elm and aspen.

This paper synthesizes results from the study on abundances of pine beauty moth (Panolis flammea Den. et Schiff.) larvae in selected stands of the Tuczno Forest District conducted in the years 1999−2002. Observation of frass fall onto dispensers set beneath tree crowns was the method to assess larvae abundance. The purpose was to assess the level of infestation of stands by larvae, as well as the rates of growth and development of larvae. Obtained results indicated the occurrence of pine beauty moth larvae almost in every fragment of the studied stands with densities of larvae in crowns changing from year to year. The year 2001 saw the greatest increase in larvae abundance. Observations showed that in 2001, the development and growth rates of larvae differed from those in 2002. The occurrence of larvae in centres, which is typical for the period between outbreaks, continued.

Genetic diversity is one of the key requirements for the adaptive potential of forest trees. This study presents the analysis of 30 Polish Scots pine provenances. According to the RAPD method, three 10−mer primers: OPE−08, OPE−09 and OPF−07 (Operon Technologies) were used to generate most polymorphic bands of amplified DNA among 450 individuals. The genetic similarity index was calculated after Nei (1987) matching coefficient and results were presented as dendrogram of genetic distances obtained from cluster analysis (UPGMA) for all populations. The Scots pine provenances were also characterized by height and diameter at the breast height „DBH” traits and were compared with the genetic diversity level. All studies populations were characterized by genetic diversity GST=0,215. This coefficient of inter−popu− lation variation was lower than the level of the differentiation within populations (HT=0,262), as it was reported for other Pine species. The results from these studies may be useful to the forest practice to help with decisions on the establishment of stable forest stands; they are also used in the forest genetic resources conservation programmes.

In the years 1996−2003, observations on the population density of nun moth butterflies were carried out in pine stands with the presence of underbrush and in a comparative group of stands without this layer. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of underbrush on the abundance of nun moth butterflies. Catches of butterflies were carried out using pheromone traps with Lymodor dispenser. In each stand one trap was hanged on the selected experimental trees. The number of butterflies in stands with hardwood underbrush was lower than in a comparative group of stands without this layer. In stands without underbrush both the mean and maximum numbers of the caught butterflies were greater. The butterfly population dynamics in those stands was higher.
