Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine the frequency of horse recreation in the forests and the awareness of threats resulting from this kind of activity for the forest ecosystem. Horse recreational activities were analyzed in terms of gender, age, education, place of residence, and occupational status. The research used an original questionnaire and was conducted in 2016 among 1203 inhabitants of Poland, who were able to ride a horse. During the initial stage, a random selection was used using a layered sample. The population was divided taking into account their place of residence into rural, small towns up to 20 thousand, and cities over 20 thousand inhabitants. At the subsequent selection stage, the number of women and men was proportionally determined. These actions allowed to determine the sample size with the maximum error probability at 0.05. In the next stage, the non−random selection was used, consisting of responding to the respondent’s availability, up to a certain number of respondents in individual groups. Statistical comparisons were carried out using chi−square test. Forest areas are an important place for practicing recreation and horse tourism due to the large space, specific microclimate and a small number of acoustic stimuli, thus creating a friendly environment for the rider and horse. The frequency of horse riding in the forests depends on age and occupational status. The most frequent users of forest horse trails are students and pupils (9.94% of responses ‘very often’ and 12.50% ‘often’), young people up to 30 years old (8.20% of responses ‘very often’ and 12.48% ‘often’). It should be noted that these are people with high ecological awareness, who know the dangers to the forest resulting from the practice of horse riding (8.34%). On the other hand, the least ecological awareness is held by the unemployed (30.77%) and people practicing free profession (48.94%). In order to increase the ecological awareness among tourists and horse riders, it would be necessary to set along the trails signs with information about the risks that horses bring to the forest and how to behave on the designated paths and horse trails.

Opis:
The article presents a comparative analysis of social preferences related to running in the forests of Poland and the Czech Republic. The preferences were determined on the basis of a questionnaire distributed in 2016 via social media among people interested in running in in both countries. The survey covered 346 people over 18 years of age in Poland and 294 people from Czech Republic. The questionnaire included questions such as: the frequency of running in the forest, the preferred season for running and average number of running kilometers in the week and the views on advantages and disadvantages of running in forest areas. The results show that there is quite a lot of differences between the preferences of respondents from both of the analyzed countries. Statistical analysis was carried out using the chi−square test. The observed differences relate mainly to the choice of season for running in forests, the frequency of running in the forests, average distance covered in a week and the views on advantages of running in forest areas. The most preferred season for running in Polish forests was summer, then spring, while in Czech ones it was exactly the opposite. Most respondents in Poland run in the forest several times a week, whereas in the Czech Republic – several times a month. The most frequently mentioned advantages of running in Polish forests were: contact with nature, clean air, landscape – pleasant environment. In Czech forests among the most frequently mentioned advantages of running were: contact with nature, good quality surface and clean air. Subsequently, the respondents pointed to the lack of traffic control infrastructure, and lack or a small number of other recreational people. Among the disadvantages of running in the forest, respondents in both counties mentioned mainly: the presence of tick and hunters. Other factors limiting the comfort of running in the forests included: uneven road surface or problems with phone connection. Only the views on the subject of the attractiveness of the forests for running and disadvantages of running in forest areas were not significantly important.

The study provides an analysis of the scope and conditions of using business information by Polish private forest entrepreneurs. The study is based on the results of research conducted in 2003 and 2007 using the same methodology. During four years between two successive study cycles, forest entrepreneurs showed a significant growth of interest in the available sources of information. The outfitting of Polish forest firms with computer hardware and access to the Internet improved. Forest entrepreneurs were more willing to read professional forestry literature. In their business activities, they showed a growing interest in Internet websites and portals, as well as in TV news, while they lost interest in the increasingly more expensive business newspapers and periodicals.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to identify the motives of visits in the Wigierski National Park (north−eastern Poland), which were focused on health and regeneration of vitality by inhabitants of Suwałki. Knowledge about the influence of forest environment on health was also investigated. The quota sampling was used to determine the sample size and number of respondents was determined proportionally to the level of education and age of people surveyed. We used discriminant analysis to determine which variables stood out in four analysed age groups. Recreational and tourism as well as therapeutic opportunities, to a great extent, are not just noticed by respondents, but also applied by them in their daily life. Respondents appreciated the healing effect of the forest environment on people, on their physical and mental needs. Such attitude was achieved thanks to widely conducted education, which enhanced such aspects as medical properties of forests and their role in health prevention. Respondents declared the need for visiting actively forest areas for leisure and health reasons. Respondents particularly emphasized a possibility of health improvement, even more than a desire to enjoy anthropogenic attractions of the Wigierski National Park. Taking into account tourists' needs that are aimed at leisure and health, as well as appreciating non−productive importance of forests, it is recommended that the State Forests, through supervision and adequate infrastructure, should strive for the most convenient way to make forest environment available for people. It was also applied for protecting forest resources in order to maintain their sustainability for present and future generations. It was stated that the promotion of active leisure in connection with natural forest environment is a new way of life, especially applied by residents of large urban agglomerations. Such promotion is also a key task of public authorities and various organizations related to ecology and health. A special role is attributed to tourism and recreation organizers, but most of all to the State Forests, which are the main administrator of this forest area.

The article presents the results of questionnaire survey, which aimed to determine social preferences in relation to running as a form of active leisure time in the forests. In 2016 the survey covered 346 people over 18 years of age. As a research tool we used an internet questionnaire, which included questions about such issues as: the frequency of running in the forest, the preferred season and the views on advantages and disadvantages of running in forest areas. The questionnaire was distributed via social media (eg Facebook) among people interested in running. Statistical analysis of the impact of personal characteristics (gender, age, place of residence) and experience in running on the respondent preferences was carried out using the chi−square test. Men dominated among the respondents. The majority were people aged 35−44 and urban residents. Over half of the respondents declared that they are doing athletic or recreational running for more than 4 years. Results show that forests in Poland are an attractive place for running. The most preferred season for running in the forest was summer and spring. Most respondents run in the forest several times a week. The most frequently mentioned advantages of running in the forest included: contact with nature, clean air, and landscape – pleasant environment. Subsequently, the respondents pointed to the lack of traffic control infrastructure, and lack or a small number of other recreational people. Among the disadvantages of running in the forest, respondents mentioned mainly: the presence of tick, hunters, and lack of clearly marked and illuminated routes. Other factors limiting the comfort of running in the forests were: uneven road surface or problems with phone connection. The results showed that the preferences varied significantly, mainly in terms of gender, age and experience in running. The age and experience of respondents have an influence on preferences regarding the frequency of running in forests. The preferences of the respondents referring to the advantages and disadvantages of running in the forests are different due to gender, age and number of years of their experience. The analysis of respondents’ preferences leads to the conclusion that for the development of running in forests, promoting the forest as a friendly running place, it is important to have appropriate recreational forest management, including, first of all, proper layout of forest road networks and their markings.

The objective of the article is to present different types of tourist routes and infrastructure elements preferred by the society basing on the results of the nationwide survey, which was conducted in 2013 on a representative sample of 1000 individuals over the age of 18. The sample was of random−amount character. Respondents evaluated the usability of several types of tourist objects (routes and paths) as well as different devices constituting their equipment. The survey also included the question which allowed the evaluation of usability of 10 infrastructure elements, which increase the quality of leisure in forests. Statistical analyses included General Line Model (GLM) or ANOVA and post−hoc comparisons with Tukey HSD test. In case of equivocal results of analyses, data was retested with PCA, which was selected upon checking the length of gradient with DCA. Data was analyzed with regard to the respondents' age, education and material status. The most desirable routes turned out to be walking trails and hiking routes (fig. 1). Results indicate that the most useful infrastructure objects include waste bins and information boards, while the least usable are playsets for children and fitness equipment (fig. 4). The most useful infrastructure elements are: signs and then ex aequo: car parks, places for animal observation, rest facilities and viewpoints, and the least needed: children's playgrounds, rope parks, and paintball sites.

The use of the numerical maps and GPS technology in national parks has been started already at the end of the 20th century, since 1995. The questionnaire was sent to 46 national parks in Europe (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Germany). In Poland, the obtained responses accounted for 83% of the sent questionnaires. 21% of parks still lack numerical maps and 26% of them have no GPS receivers. In 64% the actually used equipment does not meet the parks' needs. Most measurements are made using the standard method, but not exclusively. Usually the GPS technology is used to locate the habitats of protected vascular plants, locate the nests of the birds of prey, locate the experimental plots, locate equipment and areas covered by environmental monitoring.

Opis:
As the majority of Polish population lives in towns, there is a growing need to spend the rest time in natural conditions, explicitly in forest areas. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of natural resources of the Poleski National Park (PNP; eastern Poland) on the development of tourism within its area. We identified the factors with the greatest impact on the tourist attractiveness of PNP areas as well as assessed the level of management of this area in tourist−recreational infrastructure and availability of information about on the Park. Diagnostic survey with the original questionnaire was used as a research tool. The studies were conducted in September and October 2016 in Hańsk, Stary Brus, Urszulin and Sosnowica communes among adult residents divided into three age groups. Likert scale was used for the measurement of the respondents attitude. A sample size was established based the total adult population of four municipalities. The discriminant function was used for statistical calculations. The biggest attractions of the PNP include nature reserves, nature trails and the PNP museum. The Park is considered to be one of the most beautiful ones in Poland, with rich landscape and possible contact with unique fauna and flora. The prestige of the Park was an important factor of the attractiveness in respondents opinion. It is possible to rest actively in PNP what is supported by good management of the studied areas in the tourism−recreation infrastructure. The excellent marking of the hiking trails as well as the location of numerous information boards used by tourists were emphasised by the respondents. It seems that if taking reasonable care to protect natural resources, the PNP may be even to a greater extent subject to more complete spatial – functional management, in particular for the creation of new tourist products. In harmony with nature they determine types and forms of tourism, which can be developed in this region. These tasks fall within the competence and responsibility of the PNP authorities. The priority is to maintain an acceptable level of impact through checks and planned arrangements of indicators of tourist absorbency and capacity of these areas.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to determine the importance of various parameters of forest roads used by heavy goods vehicles for transporting timber based on the research conducted among drivers and employees working on the road infrastructure of a forest district (road managers). The study analyzed the road parameters presented in the site plan, its vertical structure and type of surface (material). A questionnaire was sent by post to all (430) forest districts in Poland, which resulted in the receipt of 296 correctly completed surveys. Additionally, individual questionnaire interviews (82) were conducted with drivers of heavy goods vehicles (trucks with dolly or semi− −trailer, and trucks with trailer). The questionnaire used an analogue scale, where respondents marked a point corresponding to the intensity of their assessment. Non−parametric tests were used (Friedman ANOVA and Kendall compatibility factor, U Mann−Whitney) in the statistical analyses. According to drivers, the most important road parameters in the site plan are the width of intersections (widened sections in the form of arcs that facilitate turning onto a perpendicular road), the proper location of log−yards, widened curves and the roadway width. Forest district employees pointed the width of intersections and the roadway as the most important. The road elements in the situational plan are regarded as more important by drivers of vehicles with dolly or semi−trailer compared to the drivers of vehicles with a trailer, which is caused by the differences in the parameters of these vehicles (turning radius). The most important road parameter in terms of the vertical structure is its gradual course (no steep ascents and descents). The respondents attach great importance to the significance of the type of road surface used, and indicated bituminous and crushed stone pavements as the most useful on transport routes in the forest. The importance of road parameters was rated significantly higher by drivers of high tonnage vehicles. However, it should be emphasized that despite the differences found, the answers of forest district road managers also indicate that they attach great importance to having the transport roads in the forest meet specific design requirements. In general the respondents considered the parameters of all analyzed road elements important – the importance of individual parameters was evaluated to from 5 to 6.5 out of 7 pts.

The objective of the paper is to analyse the social preferences to the type of the forest stand and factors deciding about the tourist attractiveness of the forest. Data was collected during the nationwide surveys carried out in 2013 on the random representative sample of 1000 respondents above 18 years of age. The surveyed persons do not indicate strong preferences for deciduous or coniferous forest stands. The analysis of preferences for different types of forest stands with regard to respondents' sex did not confirm the importance of differences. Instead they suggest that respondents of different age tend to change their preferences with time – from broadleaved forest (the youngest respondents) to coniferous forest. Respondents in poor financial standing choose deciduous forest and mixed broadleaved forest, and people in good and very good financial standing – a coniferous forest stand, or rather a mixed one. What makes a forest stand attractive is mostly the forest's appearance and the nature along with the abundance of species, and the least, the presence of water or culture and historic sites. The older the respondents are, the more they appreciate silence and relaxation far from other people, as well as nature along with its abundance of fruits and fungi to be collected, while the least important is the diversity of land. Respondents with higher education (university degree) indicate the availability of land and the presence of waters as the most important features which decide of the attractiveness of forest, whereas people with the lowest education level – nature along with its abundance of species and the forest appearance. Respondents, who are in the best financial situation declare the appearance and the presence of lakes and rivers (features related to leisure), to be the most important factors which decide about tourist attractiveness of forest, and people in poor and very poor financial situation indicated: nature along with the abundance of species, availability of forest, places related to culture and religion, nature reserves, and tourist infrastructure.

The aim of the research was: (i) to determine the variability of the number of people injured in total accidents, in serious accidents, and in fatal accidents, number of people employed, and number of days of incapacity to work caused by accidents; (ii) to check the relationships between the cause of the accident and the year of its occurrence, between the age of the injured and the number of accidents, between the work seniority of the injured and the number of accidents, and finally (iii) to determine the value and volatility of total accident rate per 1,000 employees, the rate of serious accidents per 100,000 employed, the rate of fatalities per 100,000 employed, accident severity rate per 1 injured as well as accident risk indicator per 1 employee. The most important cause of accidents at work in forestry was incorrect employee behavior (57.9%). The dominant events causing injury in forestry were impact by the object in motion and collision with/impact on a stationary object (26.7 and 22.6%, respectively). The most common accidents at work in forestry concern employees with work seniority in the field of over 16 years and less than a year (30.6 and 23.23%, respectively), people aged 30−39 and 40−49 (24.55 and 24.52%, respectively). The value of total accident rate in forestry shows a decreasing trend in 2011−2016 (–20.5%). The rate of serious and fatal accidents alternately increases and decreases. Similarly to the value of the severity of accidents, no trends were found. For the accident risk indicator a declining trend was observed in 2012−2016 (–19.3%).
