Opis:
The qualitative and quantitative descriptive models of tree architecture differ in the degree of complexity and the way of mapping tree structure, and thus, are of varied use in forestry. The qualitative, Hallé−Oldeman models, serve as a framework for analyzing tree architecture and help define the different components of a tree branching system. Among the quantitative models (here: horizontal, three−dimensional or vertical ones) the horizontal representations are the most parsimonious, and proved to be useful for examining the effects of competition process and the light conditions within the forest understory. The three−dimensional representations (Quantitative Structural Models; QSMs) have the widest range of applications as they may be used for deriving both the two−dimensional traits (such as crown length or branch height) and the volumetric traits (such as tree crown volume or wood volume). At the same time they are the most complex ones. The vertical models were used to study the impact of local terrain shape and wind conditions on tree architecture, but the way of deriving such models from the QSMs seems excessively laborious. However, we highlight here also a photogrammetric method, which allows to obtain an analogous model in much simpler way. Both three−dimensional and vertical representations are useful for determining the wood quality features. Three−dimensional models can be used to accurately measure tree woody biomass, while horizontal models can be used for reliable biomass estimations.

Wooden areas has been investigated for over 100 years. Aerial photographs are used in forestry as measurement or surveying materials. On the basis of aerial photo interpretation spatial ranges of natural disasters are made, but the main task is to use these materials for wooden objects survey and measurement. Up to now for spatial difference the wooden areas were used methods of vectorization objects and shapes of similar looking colour and picture structure features. This article presents experiment of pin−point single trees vectorization within selected subtransects.

Opis:
The paper presents selected applications of the geostatistical methods for remote sensing studies of forest ecosystems. The texture of the remote sensing images of the forests can be highly complex, but at the same time it is very useful for interpretation of these images. We explored differences on semivariances calculated from transects of the Landsat TM images associated with images of young, middle−aged, old, and natural versus planted stands, as well as compared semivariances for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) in Georgia, USA. We analyzed the imagery data in conjunction with ground measurements. The results showed that in spite of the relatively low Landsat TM resolution (30m), the semivariances might give useful additional information about the above−mentioned classes. The semivariances for loblolly pine depend on the age as well as on the origin of the forest stand (natural vs. planted). On the other hand, because of the low−resolution, the classical parameters of a range of semi−variances are rather difficult for classification. However, we found important differences for sill values as well as for semivariance values for the distances of a few lags. These parameters seem to be useful for forest stand discrimination. Significant differences were also found between semivariances calculated from loblolly pine and longleaf pine stands.

The review focuses on use of airborne hyperspectral imagery in forest species classification. Studies mentioned in the review concern hyperspectral image classification with use of various methods. Only research, where study area is located in Europe or North America were selected. Articles were reviewed with respect to used pre−processing methods, methods of feature selection or feature extraction, algorithms of image classification and trees species which were classified. The whole process of acquiring and working with hyperspectral data is described. Different approaches (e.g. use or skip atmospheric corrections) were compared. In each article, various deciduous and conifer species were classified. Studies comparing several classification algorithms (Spectral Angle Mapper, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest) were mentioned. In most cases SVM gives the best results. Species, which are classified with the highest accuracy, include Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies). Broadleaved species are, in general, classified with lower accuracy than conifer ones. Within broadleaved trees, European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and oaks (Quercus sp.) are classified with the highest accuracy.

The role of textural information can be essential when analyzing remote images of forest ecosystems. Geostatistically based methods that use textural information are widely used in image processing. The role of geostatistical methods in analyzing remote sensing images of forest areas increased rapidly during the last several years following advancements in high−resolution remote−sensor technology. The results of numerous applications of geostatistical methods for processing remotely sensed forest images are very encouraging. This paper summarizes the geostatistical methods for remote sensing classification of forest ecosystems.

Opis:
Training dataset for modelling of forest cover was created after classification of multispectral satel− lite imagery IKONOS−2 with spatial resolution 3.2 m (acquisition date – 12.08.2011). As a result, we created binary forest cover map with 2 categories: ‘forest’ and ‘not−forest’. That allowed us to compute the tree canopy cover for each pixel of Landsat 8 OLI, using vector grid with cell size of 30×30 m. Classification model was developed using training dataset that included 17,000 observations, 10,000 of them represented results of IKONOS−2 classification. Aiming to avoid errors of agricultural lands inclusion into forest mask because of lack of data, additionally we collected about 7000 random observations with canopy cover 0% that had been evenly distributed within unforested area. Random Forest (RF) model we developed allowed us to create continuous map of forests within study area that represents in each pixel value of tree canopy closeness (0−100%). To convert it into a discrete map, we recoded all values less than 30% as ‘no data’ and values from 30 to 100% as 1. Forest mask for two selected administrative districts of Chernihiv region (NE Ukraine) was created after screening map from small pixel groups that covered area less than 0.5 ha. Obtained results were compared with Global Forest Change (GFC) map and proved that GFC data can be used for forest mapping with tree canopy closeness threshold 40%. On considerable areas of abandoned agricultural lands in the analysed regions of Ukraine, forest stands are formed by Scots pine, silver birch, black alder and aspen. Existence of such forests substantially increases (on 6−8%) the forested area of Gorodnya and Snovsk districts of Chernihiv region – comparing to official forest inventory data. However, such stands are not protected and have high risks to be severed by wildfires, illegal cuttings with aim to renew the agricultural production, by diseases, insects and other natural disturbances.

Opis:
Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods or fires become more and more common phenomena in Europe. In August 2017, strong wind accompanied by heavy thunderstorms caused severe damage over the large area in central and western Poland. According to rapid damage assessment prepared by the State Forests authorities a few days after the windthrow, ca 79.7 thousand hectares of forest was damaged and 9.8 million of cubic meters of wood was lost. Assessment of such a large−scale forest damage is difficult without using the remote sensed data. In this study, we examined the potential of the European satellite Sentinel−2 data for assessment of the forest damage caused by the windthrow. The assessment was performed using a difference between a normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) calculated based on the pre− and post−damage Sentinel−2 images. NDMI was calculated based on NIR (824 nm) and SWIR (1610 nm) bands. The result of this study showed the total damage area in forest is equal to 35.8 thousand hectares, of which 27.7 thousand hectares was damaged within the State Forests and 8.1 thousand hectares outside the State Forests administration. These figures are much lower than the estimates by the State Forests, regarding the forest damage within the State Forests and higher comparing to estimations in the non−state forest. In fact, these figures are comparable with the heavily damage areas assigned to clearance by the State Forests. The accurate comparison of the results was not possible due to the lack of up−to−date information on forest damage. Sentinel−2 data revealed to be perfect data for large scale damage assessment and post−damage forest monitoring mainly due to the wide swath up to 290 km. The limitation of the optical sensors is the cloudiness. Unfortunately, in the case of this analysis, the first cloud free image was acquired 6 weeks after the windthrow. It reduces the potential of the single−source data for rapid assessment of damages.

Opis:
Evaluation of the forest landscape diversity was investigated based on the multispectral aerial images using iterative Principal Component Analysis (PCA) methodology. In 2014, we carried out several photogrammetric flights over the experimental plots establish in the Krotoszyn Plateau (central Poland) documenting the vegetation cycle of forest stands dominated by oaks. Aerial photos of the spatial resolution about 25 cm of forest area in Karczma Borowa Forest District in the range of visible light (460−650 nm) and near infrared (700−930 nm) were collected by multispectral Quercus 6 platform placed on the aircraft. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diversity of forest vegetation cover using remote sensing data based on spectral signatures of plants without complete classification of fractional vegetation cover and species identification in the field. Recursive PCA on data collection from the multispectral images helped to determine with the semi−automatic mode the number of land cover classes, including the classes of vegetation. Based on the radiometric data, the separation of inorganic matter from vegetation and diversity indicators of forest stands on the image area were evaluated. With the PCA method, along the most volatile vectors, the first division into land cover classes of vegetation was conducted. As a result of the first iteration of PCA, three classes of vegetation: deciduous trees, conifers and forest undergrowth was determined. In the second iteration, classes of forest vegetation were separated and interpreted as the area dominated by a single species of tree or shrub. The second iteration divided the deciduous plant image area in plots dominated by English oak stands with an admixture of birch and red oak. Based on the number of pixels in classes representing individual plant species, Shannon−Wiener (H) and Simpson (D) diversity indices were determined. By described methodology, it was found that the differences between the H and D indices for the imagery area after the first and second PCA iteration were small. The relevance of performing successive iterations of PCA analysis, and thus the full identification of species, in the context of diversity calculation should be the subject of further study.

Opis:
Information on the spatial distribution and variability of forests is important in monitoring of forest resources, biodiversity assessment, threat prevention, estimation of carbon content and forest management. The Pan−European High Resolution Layers (HRLs) produced as part of the European Earth Monitoring Programme – Copernicus provide detailed information on the land cover characteristics in Europe. The HRLs are produced using satellite imagery based on an interactive rule−based classification. There are the following HRL themes: imperviousness, forest, water and wetness and grasslands. The HRLs are available for the reference year 2012 and 2015, at the spatial resolution of 20 m. The forest related HRL consists of tree cover density, dominant tree type and forest type products. In this study, we performed a) the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the accuracy of the dominant leaf type (DLT) layer for the 2015 year at the national scale, and b) detailed analysis of the data quality at the forest stand level over the selected forest districts. The DLT layer was compared with the national orthophotos. The detailed analysis was carried out using Sentinel−2 images and forest inventory data obtained from the Forest Data Bank over the selected forest districts. The accuracy analysis of the national DLT layer revealed the high omission error equal to 18.8%, and lower commission error of 5.4%. The omission error is mostly related to the omitted orchards and young forest plantations, which are included in the DLT layer. The commission error of the broadleaved forest is related mostly to the small patches of coniferous forest that was misclassified as broadleaved. In general, commission errors were identified more frequently in broadleaved forest than in the coniferous forest. In many locations the patches of coniferous forest were misclassified as broadleaved forest. In general, the area of the broadleaved forest is overestimated.

The paper presents a method of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper satellite image processing to assess the condition of forests in the Tatra National Park (southern Poland). Selected images were acquired on 1987/09/01, 2005/09/02 and 2011/09/03 from the same sensor with maximum time interval for the first and last scene and from similar phenological period. Firstly, the data were radiometrically corrected using the ATCOR 2/3 software and Digital Terrain Model from the ASTER mission. Quality of the correction was assessed calculating RMSE for reflectance values from images and resampled spectral characteristics collected in terrain. RMSE was in range 3−10%. Next, basing on Landsat images, Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII) and a Maximum Likelihood supervised classificatory, following dominant land cover types were identified: forests (including dwarf pine), grasslands, rocks, lakes, shadows (additionally clouds were dis−tinguished on data from 1987/09/01). It allowed to select forest areas with producer accuracy not worse than 97.69% and user accuracy not worse than 98.31%. On corrected Landsat images Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, an overall vegetation state) and Moisture Stress Index (MSI, canopy water content) were calculated. Vegetation indices discriminated forest state using the decision tree method. The worst overall condition was observed for the 1987 (about 21% of forest stands were in the worst condition and 87% were in medium condition), while the best one in 2005 (75.51% forest stands were in good condition and 10.66% were in the best condition). In case of 2011, the overall condition was quite good, but there were large areas with poor condition caused by bark beetle outbreaks. Proposed method allows for a fast and objective assessment of forest condition. It is possible to detect damaged areas or stands in poor condition. It can be complement for traditional methods of monitoring and management in forestry and nature protection.

The most affected forest ranges included: Różanka, Nowa Wieś, Lesica, Goworów, Jodłów and Smreczyna. To evaluate the area of the windthrow in particular forest stands, the remote sensing data were used, whereas to estimate the total wood volume we applied the growth model and the average volume of the particular forest stands, gathered in the State Forests Information System (SILP) database. The volume of the windthrow evaluated by the forest rangers during some local investigation equaled 103 thousands m³, while one calculated using the SILP database – 161 thousands m³ and with the growth model – 168 thousands m³. The forest service estimations were underestimated. According to the model of the wind damage risk, most of the forest stands in the Międzylesie Forest District were highly or very highly endangered by the strong winds. The presence of the windtrhow is very dangerous either for people or the surrounding forest (due to the risk of pests outbreak). Therefore it demands immediate decisions and actions from the forest service, which need reliable and quickly accessible data. The information provided with the satellite imagery, the risk model and the growth model may accelerate the decision−making process and optimize the damage disposal. Satellite imagery also enables to estimate the amount of damage on the areas, which are hardly available for the foresters and their vehicles. Due to their high usefulness, growing availability and declining prices, these tools should be introduced to local forestry as quickly as possible.
