Opis:
Mass introduction of black cherry Prunus serotina as a forest component in Europe, since the second half of the 1900s, resulted in negative changes in many thus enriched forest communities. The aim of our study was to record the distribution of P. serotina within the Jezierzyca Valley Landscape Park and to determine possible modifications in floristic composition that might be ascribed to the presence of this alien species. The analysis of plant communities in sample plots with and without P. serotina demonstrated a considerable destructive effect of this neophyte on the floristic composition over the area of the park. Furthermore, the incidence of the black cherry in the vicinity of riparian and alder sites may threaten these floristically valuable areas. In our opinion, such situation requires control.

Opis:
The purpose of our study was to estimate genetic diversity of Prunus avium in natural populations. Genetic studies were carried out in 27 wild cherry populations sampled from several Polish tree stands. Chloroplast DNA variation was assessed and two haplotypes were identified. Theirs distribution divided populations into two groups. Haplotype H1 was present in 11 of 27 populations and H2 in 16 populations. The PCR− −SSR technique was used to detect nuclear DNA diversity. Three highly polymorphic SSR (microsatellite) primer pairs were used to describe the genetic variation. Heterozygosity values ranged from 0.500 to 0.633, while gene diversity (PIC) from 0.75 to 0.79. This study demonstrated that SSR fingerprinting with cpDNA diversity, can be used for preliminary characterization of Prunus avium populations.

Opis:
Experimental data on carbon concentration in woody plant species biomass are very scarce and value of 50% of dry biomass is widely accepted in carbon storage modeling. On the other hand, some studies have proved that the carbon concentration in woody species biomass is variable and depends on the component. Thus, the main goal of the study was to determine carbon concentration in biomass of 7 understory shrub species (basing on 282 individuals): Corylus avellana, Prunus padus, P. serotina, Frangula alnus, Sambucus nigra, Cornus sanguinea and Sorbus aucuparia as well as to analyze variability of carbon concentration among shrub species and biomass components. Carbon concentration was analyzed for leaves, fruits, branches, stemwood, stembark, coarse and fine roots. Our study revealed that the mean carbon concentration in biomass of all species studied was 47.7%. We found statistically significant differences in carbon concentration among the shrub species studied in all biomass components. The mean value for particular species was as follows: Prunus serotina – 47.5%, P. padus – 47.6%, Frangula alnus – 47.7%, Sambucus nigra – 47.7%, Corylus avellana – 47.8%, Cornus sanguinea – 47.8% and Sorbus aucuparia – 47.8%. Additionally, we found statistically significant differences in carbon concentration among biomass components within the species studied. The mean carbon concentration in fruit biomass was 46.2%, in fine roots – 47.0%, in leaves – 47.2%, in coarse roots – 47.7%, in branches – 47.9%, in stemwood – 48.5% and in stembark – 48.6%. The variability of carbon concentration in fruit, branches and leaves biomass was higher than in the remaining biomass components. The variability of carbon concentration in biomass of woody species should be considered in carbon storage modeling in forest ecosystems.

Opis:
Managed forests are likely to be exposed to uncontrolled, spontaneous spread of alien/invasive species as a result of a frequently conscious introduction of alien species to forests in order to achieve economic gains. Unfortunately, we still lack data on the intensity of such invasions to forests on a larger scale. The aim of the paper is to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of the existing regeneration of tree species, particularly the alien ones, and to determine the impact of selected factors on the regeneration of introduced species. The research was carried out in a mixed coniferous forest habitat in the "Uroczysko Główne". Particular focus was on the regeneration of alien species. Eight tree species were found to be regenerating naturally on the examined plots of which two were alien species. The scale of occurrence of alien species in comparison with native ones, particularly the black cherry, may now become a problem. Alien species accounted for nearly 25% of all tree species regeneration in the examined area and were noted in over half of the plots. It can therefore be said that the conditions occurring in the southern complex of the Niepołomice Forest have a great impact on tree regeneration and may favour spontaneous spread of alien species. The research helped to quantified and qualified the intensity of forest colonisation by the two most frequently occurring alien species.

Opis:
In spite of the fact that the selection of introduced species in Poland is limited and their proportion in forest stands is in fact insignificant, the threat of launching the invasive processes on a large scale is highly probable. The Niepołomice Forest was selected as a study area because the species occurring in the stands are of alien origin and can be a source of diaspores for a spontaneous, natural regeneration of these species. The studies were conducted in the moist broadleaved forest habitat featuring high trophic and moisture conditions, thus being more susceptible to non−indigenous species invasion. At the study plots three of fourteen woody species occurring across the Forest i.e. red oak, and black cherry were described. So far, the occurrence of alien species in the study area has been on an insignificant scale when compared with the regeneration of native species. Currently, they occupy nearly 11% of the plots, representing about 3% of the total share in the regeneration of the main forest tree species.

Opis:
This article studies the effect of light and high temperature on various parameters describing the growth and development of bird cherry ermine moth (Yponomeuta evonymellus L.) – the main pest of bird cherry (Prunus padus L.). We found that light significantly influences the moth masses and dynamics of their development. Moths developed from larvae feeding on leaves growing in full light conditions have a higher mass and shorter time of adult eclosion from pupa in comparison with larvae feeding on leaves growing in shade. However, extremely high summer temperature significantly disturbs pupation process in Y. evonymellus population. Our laboratory experiments indicate that a critical temperature is 36°C. Above this threshold the percentage of pupation drastically decreases (from ca. 70% to 35%). The conditions of intensive sun are better for some parameters of growth and development of bird cherry ermine moth. On the other hand, extreme summer temperatures, related with global warming, may restrict the occurrence of Y. evonymellus gradation.

Opis:
Black cherry is an important invasive species in forest ecosystems in Poland. It developed mainly in Scots pine stands. The aim of the study was to identify microscopic fungi colonies inhabiting black cherry stumps. In the spring of 2017, wood samples were collected from stumps created after cutting in each subsequent month of 2016 in the Podanin Forest District (19°28'00'E, 52°04'00'N). Stumps up to 5 cm and more than 5 cm in diameter were selected for the study. In total, 72 discs from the first stage of the decomposition of wood were collected. The discs were drilled to obtain fine sawdust for further analysis. The trials were divided into four periods. DNA isolation was performed using the Plant Genomic DNA purification kit (ThermoScientific). The ITS1/2 rDNA region was used for species identification. The analysis was carried out using specific primers. The obtained product was purified and sequenced using the Illumina SBS technology. The resulting sequence was compared using the BLAST algorithm with reference sequences from the NCBI database. The communities of fungi inhabiting the black cherry stumps differed from each other. The highest number of taxa was identified in samples from stumps over 5 cm sheared in autumn and winter, while the lowest in stumps up to 5 cm sheared in spring and winter. Fungi belonging to the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Glomeromycota, Zygomycota and non−cultivable fungi and organisms belonging to other kingdoms were identified. Saprophytes from Menispora sp. dominated on the analysed stumps. The collection of fungi of larger stumps was more diverse and more numerous than on stumps with a smaller diameter. A greater diversity of taxa was distinguished by the stumps of tree fallen in the growing season. The majority of the analyzed samples were dominated by Ascomycota. Basidiomycota clusters dominated in the winter. The predominant share of saprotrophs shows the distribution of stumps. The most desirable effect of the research would be the indication of naturally occurring saprotroph, whose operation would reduce the black cherry’s yield strength. The applied method of sequencing based on the Illumina System was effective to determine the composition of the fungal population.

Opis:
Black cherry (Prunus serotina) was planted in forests in Central Europe in the hope of producing valuable timber and after the first disappointments, in the hope of improving the soils of coniferous plantations. Nevertheless, an unequivocal evaluation of its effect on soil environment is still a controversial issue. The aim of this study was to determine a temporary fluctuation of selected soil properties in Scots pine forest dominated by black cherry. The research was carried out in Wołów Forest Division (SW Poland). Two Scots pine monocultures developed on podzol site with and without P. serotina in shrub layer, were selected for the study. Twelve research plots (10×10 m) were randomly selected on the sites. On each plot the cover of P. serotina in the shrub layer was evaluated and every three months, during single research year (November 2013 − November 2014) soil properties (total N, organic C, soil reaction) were determined in organic (O) and humus (A) horizons. Analysis of variance and PCA procedure demonstrate some significant relationships between P. serotina and soil properties in Scots pine forest. The presence of black cherry contributes to continued changes in the organic horizon expressed by increase in total N (range of average from 1.14 to 1.38%) and drop in C:N ratio (range of average from 22.86 to 25.73). Apart from the spring, increase in pH value in the organic (range of average from 4.03 to 4.58) and humus horizons (range of average from 3.59 to 4.04) was found on the site invaded by black cherry.
