Opis:
The paper presents the 2001 questionnaire survey data concerning the financial aspects of protection of nature reserves located in the territory administered by the „State Forests” National Forest Holding. As shown in the specification of direct costs (i.a. treatment execution costs) and indirect costs (i.a. part of SF staff remunerations for their participation in decision−making, conservation and execution of protective tasks in reserve area) the financial contribution incurred by the State Forests for the maintenance and conducting of this form of nature protection proved to be substantial.

Opis:
The research was undertaken due to the lack of synthetic studies and collections concerning monumental trees in the spa towns in Poland. We investigated all 45 towns with such a status. The article presents the numerical and species data of the nature monument trees. For individual species, the average breast height diameter is also given. A database of nature monuments was created (separately for coniferous and deciduous trees), covering over 90% of monumental trees that are located in all spa towns in Poland. Data for the study were obtained mainly from spas and spatial conditions and directions of communes and from the Central Register of Nature Conservation Forms as well as the General as well as regional directorates of Environmental Protection. In addition, field observations were made in selected spa towns. There were over 1507 monument trees in Polish health resorts. They represented 26 coniferous species (including Larix decidua, Taxus baccata) and 50 deciduous species with different varieties (including Tilia cordata, Carpinus betulus, Quercus robur). Followig spas were the towns with the highest number of monumental tree (over 50): Nałęczów, Kołobrzeg, Szczawno−Zdrój, Szczawnica, Cieplice, Kamień Pomorski, Jedlina−Zdrój, and Konstancin−Jeziorna. Constant monitoring and field inventory of missing monument trees in health resorts in Poland is recommended. Periodic inventory of monumental trees should lead to the desired quantitative and qualitative structure of trees and to protect further valuable specimens from the natural and social point of view. Trees growing in the spa towns perform a number of functions, including particularly important health care. Places with monumental tree species gain in value and therefore it is necessary to protect them and to continue research, one of which is presented in this article.

Opis:
The study objectives were to identify external sources of financing the nature and forest education and to analyze the level of their use in regional directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) in the years 2006−2016. In addition, we studied the relationship between the amount of external and internal financing. As a data source, we used reports on educational activities of the State Forests for the investigated period. The work determines the relationship between individual categories of external funds and the amount of total funding and the amount of external financing for forest and nature education in individual RDSFs. In order to examine the relationship between the amount of external and internal financing, correlation analysis of changes was carried out. The conducted research confirmed the diversity in the use of the individual external sources in the financing of forest and nature education in the State Forests. The RDSFs use mainly money from the voivodeship funds for environmental protection and water management. They also conduct extensive cooperation with various entities, which participate in expenditures, hence a significant share of these funds in the financing of forest and nature education. We found a weak correlation between the amount of funding raised from voivodeship funds for environmental protection and water management and own sources of education financing (r=0.2162) and between other external sources and own sources of funding (r=0.2717). On the other hand, a high correlation occurred between funds from voivodeship funds for environmental protection and water management and other external sources of financing and external financing (r=0.6544 and 0.617, respectively). RDSFs should intensify their activities aimed at changing the structure of financing sources, in favor of increasing the share of external funds. The priority in this respect should be to clarify the rules of financing forest and nature education from the state budget and of using the funding opportunities from this source.

The author refers to the contemporary understanding of the terms: biological diversity, sustainable development, nature conservation. The most recent information about biological diversity of Polish forests was presented on the landscape, habitat, species and gene level. Differences were shown between sustainable use of biological diversity treated as the contemporary form of nature conservation and traditional conservation and biocoenotic methods. The author pointed out to difficulties in and lack of acceptance of the large−scale form of nature conservation in forests by some circles of professional nature conservationists.

Opis:
The paper presents a multifaceted structure of timber harvest in 2008−2015 in the Białowieża, Browsk and Hajnówka forest districts located in the Białowieża Forest. The object of the research, including the Białowieża National Park being a remnant of the primeval forests, is considered one of the most valuable forest areas of natural origin in Europe. The studies were made on the basis of the data from the reports created by the State Forests Information System and forest management plans, as well as the nature conservation programs of the surveyed forest districts. In the analysed period, a total of 665,032.5 m3 of merchantable timber was harvested in the analysed area. The highest volume of merchantable timber was harvested in the Browsk Forest District – 305,934 m3 (46%), then in the Hajnówka Forest District – 219,300 m3 (33%), with the lowest volume harvested in the Białowieża Forest District 139,788 m3 (21%). Among the individual assortment groups, the medium−sized timber was the most common and its harvested volume amounted to 413,579 m3, while the harvested volume of large−sized timber amounted to 251,454 m3. The lowest harvested volume concerned the small−sized timber and amounted to 21,652 m3. In the analysed period, softwood had the largest share in timber harvest and amounted to 443,469 m3. Hardwood was obtained in the volume of 243,215 m3. According to the cutting category, the timber harvest structure was as follows: the highest volume was harvested in pre− commercial thinning 382,495 m3 (54%), that from incidental felling amounted to 251,003 m3 (38%), while the lowest volume of harvested timber was from final cutting – 53,186 m3 (8%). Forest districts located in the Białowieża Forest encounter many difficulties affecting timber harvest. The main reason for this lies in the numerous restrictions imposed on the management of areas covered by various forms of nature protection, including the exclusion of some habitats, or stands of 100 years of age and older from management, which significantly affects the yield. The lack of a determined rotation age for stands in the Białowieża Forest also has a significant impact on timber harvest.

Particular entities of the State Forests differ in their activity in the field of nature−and forest−related education. The study provides an economic evaluation of the degree of involvement of forest districts, within the Regional Directorate of State Forests (RDSF) in Kraków, in educating the society on nature− and forest−related issues. Financial expenditures were analysed and the zero unitarization method was used. In the years of 2005−2009, over 82.4% of expenses on education in the RDSF in Kraków were covered by the State Forests, ca. 42% were financed from the own funds of forest districts and over 40% – from the Forest Fund. Total expenses on educational activities included 57% of direct costs and 43% of indirect costs. Quantitative indicators and expenditure indicators provided basis for the distinction of groups of forest districts, according to their activity in the field of nature− and forest−related education.

Opis:
Coppice management system uses the ability of trees to produce shoots from felled stumps. A modification of this type of management is the system of so called coppice with standards where low−forest individuals grow along with single, high−forest trees originated from seeds. Both types of silvicultural systems have been used in Central Europe since Middle Ages supplying small assortments of wood and tanbark. The economic changes that took place in the 1700s initiated conversion of coppice forests into high−forest ones. A brief renaissance of coppice system occurred in 1850−1900 as a result of rapid growth in the demand for oak tanbark, which overtime was gradually replaced by synthetic materials. Today there is a return to coppice management, this however being the result of increased nature protection efforts. Withdrawal from coppice cuts causes increased shading of the forest floor and, in consequence, a decline in biological diversity following disappearance of thermophilous and heliophilous animal and herb species. Restoration of coppicing or similar forms of management restrains their extinction. In Poland, coppice management is practically unknown, however in the Pogórze Kaczawskie (Sudety Mountains) there have preserved oak coppice stands – the remains of the former German management. Such stands abandon with rare and protected species of forest floor vegetation and a relatively numerous population of wild service. The experiences of other countries indicate that preservation of such species−rich and very specific plant communities will probably require very active treatments.

The use of the numerical maps and GPS technology in national parks has been started already at the end of the 20th century, since 1995. The questionnaire was sent to 46 national parks in Europe (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Germany). In Poland, the obtained responses accounted for 83% of the sent questionnaires. 21% of parks still lack numerical maps and 26% of them have no GPS receivers. In 64% the actually used equipment does not meet the parks' needs. Most measurements are made using the standard method, but not exclusively. Usually the GPS technology is used to locate the habitats of protected vascular plants, locate the nests of the birds of prey, locate the experimental plots, locate equipment and areas covered by environmental monitoring.

The study analyses the spatial distribution of European yew and its co−occurrence with other trees or different individuals of the species. The study was conducted in the ‘Cisy nad Liswartą' nature reserve (50°46'27.12"N, 18°47'11.86"E). Data was collected in the whole reserve as well as on three 40×40 m study plots. The selected plots varied in terms of yew density, stand species composition and soil humidity. Study plots were divided into 16 squares (10×10 m). Ripley's K functions were used to examine spatial patterns of yew and other tree species populations. The distribution of all trees was random in the reserve. However, distribution of yew population was clumped. Yew preferred sites close to the creeks. Significant clustering of yew trees at distances up to 60−180 m was found. Distribution of yew on plot II was random, while clumped on plots I and III. The co−occurrence of yew and other tree species was random on plot I. Nevertheless, the positive correlation was found for yew and other tree species at the scale of 13−19 m and negative correlation at the distance 0−4 m. Co−occurrence of yew and other tree species was random on plot III as well. Negative correlation was found for thin yew and spruce at the distance of 8 m on plot I. Positive correlations were noticed for yew and other tree species, yew and sycamore at the distance 16 m on plot II. Negative correlations at the distance 18 m were achieved on plot III for: yew and alder, large yew and alder, yew and other tree species of diameter 15−35 cm. Yew grows on higher places, on small islands. The competition between spruce and yew (negative correlation) was the consequence of light and humidity demand of both tree species. The negative correlation between yews and medium alders on longer distance was the result of light competition.
