Opis:
On the basis of historical and recent cadastral maps, topographic maps, and aerial photographs, we analysed changes in forest area within the cadastral units of Karpniki village, in the Karpnicki Potok (SW Poland). In 1823−2012, forest area increased there from about 41% to over 57% of the total area. The greatest increase has been recorded recently. Moreover, at that time over 16% of land classified officially as farmland was naturally colonized by communities dominated by woody plants. This seminatural process in the analysed case does not pose any serious threat to natural resources, but a complete lack of its control may lead to deterioration of the value of the local landscape and development of low−quality forest stands. The observed changes seem to be typical of other areas located in lower parts of the Sudety Mountains.

forest cartography

old forest maps

Opis:
This article describes how the first forest maps in the Congress Kingdom of Poland were prepared and used. The source materials include the decisions of the governing authorities, special instructions for the forest surveyors, and original letters and reports related to the implementation of particular regulations. The principal cartographic materials consist of 22 surviving forestry area maps contained in the collections of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. The following elements were studied: title text of the maps, their mathematical foundations, the scope of their content, their graphics and supplementary tables. The principles of forest cartography, as clearly set out in the documents, were implemented effectively in practice. Great credit for this goes to the chief organiser of the whole operation, Ludwik Plater, the general director of the State Forests. Thanks to his efforts, the Polish forestry system already had valuable thematic maps at its disposal in the 1810s. Together, they probably covered the entire area of the Kingdom. In the creation of the maps, a variety of Prussian and Austrian cartographic materials from the beginning of the 19th century was applied. The scale of the analysed maps was around 1:66 700. They were not required to meet high standards of geometrical accuracy – they were made hurriedly, during tours of forestry administrative areas. The rules for their editing were stated somewhat perfunctorily in the instructions, and consequently there were certain differences between maps in terms of content and graphical appearance. The main element of the maps’ content was the extent of the state forests and their division into regions and subregions. A significant novelty was the use of a uniform green colour to denote forest – previously pictorial symbols in the shape of trees had frequently been used. Another important element was the marking of the boundaries of areas of forest designated for felling. These were drawn every year in red. Other objects shown included foresters’ lodges, certain rivers, roads, and neighbouring villages and towns. The contemporary importance of these maps is variable, and depends primarily on the range of content given in the tables. Some of the maps dated 1818 contain only information on the assignment of forests to administrative areas or regions, and their surface areas. Maps from 1816−1817 also contain, among other things, information about tree species and forest types. In short, there is no doubt that ‘Plater’s cartography' was a short, but important, stage in the development of the forest cartography.

Opis:
This article examines the history of forest cartography in Poland. It describes the results of two years of research carried out by the author at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. The aim of the work was to recognise the forest maps stored in the archives and to give their general description. An original procedure was developed for this purpose. Investigations were limited to the Cartographic Collection, which contains more than 15,000 maps, and the collection of Cartography Department Acquisitions consisting of more than 500 maps. Based on the inventory records and catalogue cards, 1356 items which might be forest maps were selected, and underwent detailed visual analysis. The majority of them (75%) were documented photographically. At the initial stage, 150 maps were rejected because of the formal reasons. The rest included 463 foreign−language maps: 207 in German (mainly from the 1796−1806 period); 242 in Russian (particularly from years 1868−1914; fig. 1), of which 180 showed areas in present−day Belarus; 13 in Latin (mostly from the 1795−1804 period); and one in French (dated 1810). The collection of Polish forest maps consisted of 743 items. The largest group (549 maps) depicted areas of the so−called Polish Kingdom, which existed in the years 1815−1914 (fig. 2). These maps were divided into eight main types. The number of produced maps decreased significantly after the January Uprising. The remaining 194 Polish forest maps cover areas in different regions, date from different periods or are undated. The proposed method enabled the effective attainment of the set objectives, and may be applied to work carried out at other state archives. The number of forest maps held at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw was found to be greater than the initial estimates. The collected documentation will enable the preparation of more detailed studies, devoted to: Polish forest maps for the area of the Polish Kingdom from the period of 1815−1914, German ones from years 1796−1806 and Russian ones from the period of 1865−1914. Analysis of the other designated groups will be possible once the collections would have been supplemented with items from other archives.

Opis:
According to the European Landscape Convention, local landscapes have to be identified and assessed. A systemized approach to landscape evaluation can provide a basis for the development of landscape maps. The influence of dense forests on the esthetic value of rural space was evaluated. The new method for evaluating forests' impact on the perceived scenic value of rural landscapes was proposed on the example of a lakeland area. The study was performed in the southern part of the municipality of Pozezdrze (N Poland). The surveyed area is highly attractive for tourists and is situated in between of the popular tourist destinations. The eastern and western part of Pozezdrze are covered by dense forests, whereas the central part is occupied mainly by arable land and settlements. The observed distribution of spatial elements is optimal for analyses of landscape value. Landscape was assessed with Wejchert Impression Curve approach. This method focuses directly on specific landscape components, including forests. The curve expresses an observer's impressions based on four landscape parameters (tab. 1). The impression curve accurately depicts the influence of landscape components on the esthetic value of the surrounding space. Every landscape component is assessed on a scale from 0 to 12 points. The observation points were distributed in a regular grid of 115 squares (500×500 m) covering an area of 2875 ha. The field survey was performed in mid−September 2014 by an expert with 20 years of experience in landscape perception research. Survey scores were assigned to the center of mass of basic survey units. Landscape attractiveness maps were generated with the use of cartograms and by spatial interpolation based on ordinary kriging. The 13−point grading scale was divided into 4 attractiveness categories describing the esthetic value of landscape. The results confirm the hypothesis that dense forests significantly contribute to the esthetic value of rural landscape. Forests and their immediate surroundings ranked in the top two categories of scenic attractiveness. The boundaries of those categories mostly overlapped forest boundaries, indicating that forests highly influence the esthetic value of landscape. The lowest attractiveness categories were identified in areas devoid of large forests.

Opis:
The functioning of the forest digital maps and conducting complex silviculture implemented in accordance with the diversified development creates great demand for a quick method of spatial data capture. Currently used data collectors and navigation receivers enable the measurements of the forest, but the results are not reliable taking into account their quality. In this study the evaluation of currently used measuring devices were realized and new, reliable solution that can streamline data capture in the field was proposed. The work was carried out in the Pułtusk Forest District (central Poland). We established five plots in the stand with the alder as a dominant species. 137 reference points were captured using classical surveying methods. We used the following data collectors: Motorola Omnii XT15 and Workabout PRO, Samsung Galaxy Core Plus smartphone and GIS Trimble ProXH navigation receiver. In addition, the unmanned aircraft i.e. popular on the market DJI Phantom 4 was also used. The accuracy was assessed by determining the error of the plot area and the accuracy of control points (MP). It was found that current popular data collectors and smartphones define the plot area with an error of about 3%, the same positioning of the object can be accurate from 2 to 6 meters (tab. 1). The results allow to conclude that the use of smartphones may be important only for draft assessment, and the realization of the measurement using the data collectors should always be preceded by the control measurement on the charac− teristic points. Significantly better results are obtained by the GIS class receivers (MP less than 2 meters) and using differential correction (MP less than 0.6 meters). However, these devices are used rarely in practice, despite universal access to the network of GNSS reference stations. The use of drone allowed to obtain images for the entire area in 15 minutes. The orthophotomap was automatically made in point−cloud technology. This method gave an error of 1.3% for estimat− ing the plot area and 1.69 meters for the position of control points for objects borders. Given the falling prices of unmanned platforms and low labor intensity of this measurement method, we can assume that it will find widespread use in updating of forest digital maps.
