The aim of this study was to assess the impact of climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) on tree ring width of larches from stands localised in southern part of Poland. Total ring as well as early− and latewood widths were taken in consideration. At the beginning authors used only standard processing and methods. Classic approach were insufficient to make some data useful for the correlation analysis, so authors decided to use more robust, custom methods.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to examine the sprouting ability and growth of silver birch after cleaning in a 11−year−old oak stand in Kolumna Forest District (central Poland). The purpose of the cleaning was to remove naturally regenerated birch. Six different treatments were applied as a cleaning methods. They differed in time of application and height of cutting or breaking the birch sprouts, i.e. spring cleaning at ground level in every second oak row (W1) or over the entire surface (W2), cutting or breaking at a height of 1 m in spring (W3a, W3b) and cutting or breaking at a height of 1 m in summer (W4a, W4b). We analyzed the formation of new sprouts and their height and dbh increment over a 4−year period after the treatment. On average, after spring cleaning 10−20% of birches produced new sprouts when birch was cut at the ground level. When cut at one meter, 85−90% of birches produced new sprouts. Cleaning in the summer decreased the sprouting ability by 20−25%. There were also significant differences in height growth of sprout between spring (better) and summer (worse) time of cleaning. There were no significant differences in sprouting ability and sprout growth between cutting and breaking when done at the same time of the year. Thus, the most effective way to restrict competition of birch in young oak stands is cutting at ground level.

Opis:
Pathogenic oomycetes represented mainly by the species of Phytophthora genus are among the most dangerous plant pathogens. They pose a serious threat for agricultural as well as wild plants, and are involved in forest decline worldwide. Over 140 pathogenic Phytophthora species have been identified so far. The common infection symptoms include rotting of below− and above− ground parts of plants, causing weakness and slow decline of infected trees. The economic losses caused by certain Phytophthora species may rich even 100%. Globalization and border opening have facilitated the transport of plant material between countries and continents, thus increased the risk of transfer of various Phytophthora genus representatives to new geographical locations. Global warming (e.g. mild winters) have facilitated the expansion of species from southern to northern Europe. Among Polish Phytophthora isolates are species that have previously been known only in nurseries (e.g. P. cactorum), but nowadays they are also isolated from forests (e.g. oak stand in the Krotoszyn Plateau). It suggests the pathway from nurseries to stands with plant for plantings and attached soil. There are also new species, that have not been isolated so far in the world (P. polonica) or found far away from Poland (P. fragaliaefolia in Japan on strawberry). The possible natural pathways are birds and water courses. In Mazowsze and Wielkopolska regions (C and W Poland) the polyphagous P. cinnamomi was found on pedunculate oaks (Quercus robur). This species causes significant damage to red oak forest in France, but also threats Jarrah forests in the Australian ecosystem (it attacks ca. 1000 species of plants). Fortunately, in addition to time consuming and laborious classic methods of Phytophthora identification, based on morphology and physiological properties, molecular methods that are based on immunological tests and chromosomal or mito− chondrial DNA markers identification have come into common use. Despite morphological similarity to true fungi, oomycetes are more closely related to diatoms and brown algae, and have several structural features that differentiate them from fungi, including the cell wall composed of cellulose instead of chitin. That is one of the reasons that fungicides have a limited use in the fight with Phytophthora infections. Additionally, type of ecological niches that are settled by pathogenic oomycetes (root remnants in soil, watercourses) hinders the chemical combating. Biocontrol, i.e. the use of interspecies interactions between microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) to limit the growth and development of pathogens, seems to be a reasonable alternative.

The paper provides an analysis of four volume increment indicators in a 50 year−old pine forest and changes in their value over time. Major statistical characteristics were adopted for each indicator in 5−year incremental periods jointly for the entire stand and in Kraft biosocial classes and similarly for dominant and suppressed stands. Moreover, the authors examined if the analysed volume increment indicators comply with the theoretical (normal) distribution.

The authors established how many times the number of sample plots of a given size at a given age should be increased in relation to the last measurement to attain the same result accuracy. Moreover, the optimal size of small sample plots that can grant the most accurate results was calculated.

This review is based on our observations and detailed studies conducted in more than 100 bare−root forest nurseries in Poland. We concentrated on recent work on ectomycorrhizal community structure of most common forest trees (pine, spruce, larch, oaks, beech and birch). The following issues are addressed: fungal diversity, host specificity and age, ascomycetes or basidiomycetes predominance, and exploration types of mycorrhizae as well as edaphic factors.

The effect of the snow cover on the survival of beech seeds from the time seeds fell onto the ground until the appearance of seedlings was investigated during two seasons at the study sites in the Babiogórski National Park and in the Ojcowski National Park. The obtained results show that snow cover has influence on the shaping of a spatial pattern of seed survival, and on the appearance of germinated seedlings. However, no decisive influence of snow cover was shown on the appearance of seedlings. The drying of the germinated seeds is the main cause of their mortality.

Naturally regenerated silver birch is one of the most abundant competitor for planted seedlings in central Poland. The effect of the interaction between planted oak seedlings and naturally regenerated birch was studied in 14−17−years−old sessile oak stand. The experiment was established at stand age of 14−years. At that time, there were around 4000 oaks and 10000 birches per hectare. A sample of dominant individuals of oak were selected and one of three treatments were applied to each individual. The treatments included: (i) removal of all naturally regenerated trees in a radius of 1 m (W1), (ii) removal of all naturally regenerated trees in a radius of 2 m (W2) and (iii) untreated control (K). Breast height diameter and height of selected oaks were measured during three years following the experiment establishment. The release of competition resulted in greater diameter and height growth. The diameter growth was increasing with an increment of free space from oak and was the greatest in the W2 treatment. The increment of height growth was similar regardless of the treatment radius. In practical forestry, silver birch can be recommended as admixture in pure oak stands with low survival rate as replacement for dead oaks. However, a minimum distance of 2 m between oak and birch should be kept.

We examined growth of oaks after cleaning carried out in a 11−year−old stand in Kolumna Forest District (central Poland). The purpose of the treatment was to remove naturally regenerated species mainly birch. Four different cleaning variants were applied. They differed in time of application and height of unwanted trees i.e. spring cleaning at ground level in every second oak row (W1) or over the entire surface (W2), breaking at a height of 1 m in spring (W3) or in summer (W4) and control (K) where trees were not removed. We analyzed height and its increment, dbh and its increment as well as slenderness, i.e. h:d ratio, in 4−year−long period after treatment. The study reviled that the cleaning, regardless of the applied method, significantly improved oak growth, while lack of cleaning led to increased competition of birch. The pressure from the other species firstly reduced diameter increment and later the height increment (tab.). As a result, the h:d ratio of oaks increased. The 4−year height and dbh increment were similar in all the applied treatments but in the last year of study the dbh increment in variants W2 and W4 was significantly higher than in W1 and W3 due to greater competition of birch in these variants (figs. 1 and 2). Cleaning done on a limited area provides satisfactory growth and stability for young oaks, but it is probable that such a stand needs more frequent intervention than the one from W2 cleaning variant.
