Opis:
The paper is an attempt to determine the testing standard of root growth potential of European tree species: pine, spruce and larch. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse during the dormancy season (February−March). The experimental variants consisted of two methods of seedling storage: the cold store and traditional storage pit. The obtained results revealed that the tested species had poor root growth capacity when compared to Burdett scale and their response range is between 0 and 3. It was noted that the storage method stimulates root production. As a rule the seedlings stored in the pit had higher root growth response than those stored in the cold store.

Opis:
Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is among the major managed tree species in Europe. In Poland, oak woodlands cover 6.9% of forest area. Furthermore, the significance of native oaks for Polish forestry is rising because the Polish National Forest Strategy predicts a growth of forest cover from 28.5% to 33% by year 2050 with the primary focus on the increase in contribution of deciduous tree species (from 22% to 33%). Therefore, for establishment of new stands, oak seedlings are grown for 2−3 years in forest nurseries. For optimal growth and development all European oak species are critically dependent on ectomycorrhizal fungi. The objective of this study was to describe the temporal dynamics of ectomycorrhizal community of pedunculate oak seedlings during the first year of growth in bare−root forest nursery. Experiment was conducted in forest nursery Miranowo (western Poland). The species structure of an ectomycorrhizal community was assessed every 10 or 15 days from May till October. Mycorrhizal colonization of tested seedlings changed from 0 to 85% depending of the time of sampling. Based on combination of morphological and molecular techniques, nine ectomycorrhizal fungal taxa were distinguished. The first ectomycorrhizas formed by Scleroderma verrucosum were detected 50 days after acorns sowing. In the next sampling days ectomycorrhizal community was dominated consecutively by Inocybe curvipes and Hebeloma sacchariolens (with maximum of abundance 60.98 and 75.55%, respectively). The obtained results were strongly influenced by the infection with the fungal biotroph Erysiphe alphitoides and resulted in a dramatic reduction in the abundance of living ectomycorrhizas down to 7.5%. Our investigation revealed that ectomycorrhizal fungal community of pedunculate oak seedlings during the first year of growth in bare−root forest nursery is rich in terms of number of species and a temporal changes are very dynamic. Thus we suggest, that in case of pedunculate oak artificial inoculation in general is not necessary for oaks seedlings in nursery practice.

Opis:
The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between the dimensions and increment of the aboveground (easy to determine) and the belowground biomass of fir undergrowth in different shelter conditions. In the examined samples, the length of taproots (DKp) up to the age of 30 was dependent on its increment during the first three years of development. Later years saw an intensified growth of taproots. However, the differences from the first years of growth did not compensate for the differences in the first years. Reduced DKp growth was observed in the group of seedlings incrementing to a height of less than 4 cm. The height increment of fir undergrowth at about 20 years of age should not be less than 20 cm. The growth of roots and aboveground parts depends on other factors. The growth of roots was related to the growth of aboveground parts only to a small degree. Under the conditions of suppression, the extremely poor height increment of firs was compensated by the development of the aboveground biomass. With a moderate height increment (sufficient light availability) root growth was more intense. No clear relationship was found between the development of taproots and horizontal roots.

The paper presents investigation on influence of root shortening on growth of 2−years−old Norway spruce seedlings after their development in the nursery. Measurements of basic morphological features reveal that strong length reduction increases regeneration of spruce root system. Together with that, slight decrease in height and diameter increment of the main shoot can be observed. Shortening of spruce roots improves significantly the balance between above− and belowground parts of the seedlings as well.

In the paper the authors compare the growth of plantations established with 1−year−old container−raised small root−ball and bare−rooted pine seedlings. The planting dates were: late summer, early spring, late autumn and spring. The experiment results showed that irrespective of the type of seedlings used the growth of plantations originated from the summer and autumn planting was not inferior to those established in spring. The percentage of root−ball seedlings was higher. After two years they showed better height growth than the bare−root seedlings however the effect depended on planting date. The obtained results proved sufficient to begin experimental planting on a large commercial scale. The establishment of plantations in summer and autumn can make the seedling storage unnecessary and reduce nursery production costs.

Opis:
Optimisation of patch selective cutting, especially the interaction between size and shape of artificial gaps and biotic factors influencing tree regeneration, is rather sparsely documented in Polish silvicultural textbooks. The removal of trees can increase availability of nutrients in artificial gaps. Establishment of root gaps and vigorous development of vegetative cover (weeds) is another consequence. This paper presents review of investigations that describe interactions between mentioned factors influencing regeneration growth and parameters of gaps. The special attention is paid to potential application of cited results in practical silviculture.

pedunculate oak
Opis:
Pedunculate oak is a species of major economic importance in Polish forests. This species seedlings constitute 18.9% of the nursery production in the country. One of the most widespread fungal disease these oaks face is the oak powdery mildew induced by Erysiphe alphitoides. Nursery production is on the lookout for environment−friendly means of plant protection as well as growth simulators capable of raising levels of productivity. Our objectives was to assess two preparation treatments regarded as biostimulators (registered as fertilisers under the names Apol−Humus and Apol−Hum Chelat) in the raising of seedlings of pedunculate oak in bare−root nursery conditions. The experiment included 6 variants with seedlings treated with the above agents, protected against mildew in the traditional way using Falcon 460 EC, treated with fertiliser and fungicide at the same time, or left as control specimens with no measures taken. All preparations were applied by means of foliar spraying 5 times in the course of the season. Survival of seedlings was then assessed at the season end, along with biometric features like root−collar diameter, length of main root and stem, dry mass of leaves and stem, and degree of oak powdery mildew attack. Results indicated curtailment of mildew infection of oak seedlings thanks to both of the biostimulators, albeit to a more limited extent than when fungicide was applied. No stimulation of seedling growth was achieved, however, though the most favourable biometric parameters characterised the oaks supplied with both biostimulator and fungicide. Significantly higher survival rate was noted for oaks offered effective protection against mildew, in the variants with the fungicide or with simultaneous application of Apol−Humus or Apol−Hum Chelat with Falcon. The research points to the two biostimulators under study (based on natural components) being suitable for use in the nursery production of pedunculate oak seedlings, with it being presumed that either or both can allow for reduction in amount of fungicide necessary to be used to safeguard seedlings against mildew.

The paper evaluates seedling performance in a forest culture five years after its establishment. Three pre−winter and one spring planting dates have been tested using root−balls and bare−roots seedlings. Both types of seedlings planted before winter showed the same quality, while the quality of seedlings with root−ball planted in spring was higher. Seedlings with root−ball were not affected by the time of planting. Differences between root−ball and bare root seedlings planted in spring increased throughout the entire five−year test period.

Opis:
The effects of pine and oak forest litter on mycorrhizal status of 2−year−old Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings grown in a bare−root nursery was investigated. The research was carried out in the nursery of Vilnius University Botanical Garden in Lithuania. Ectomycorrhizal communities were assessed by a combination of morphological and molecular techniques. Statistical analysis revealed significant effect of litter treatment on some growth parameters of seedlings: seedling height, needle dry weight and total seedling weight. The survival rate of seedlings was significantly highest for oak litter, intermediate for pine litter, and lowest for control soil. Pine seedlings were colonized by indigenous ecto− and ectendomycorrhizal symbionts. Seven mycorrhizal species (Suillus luteus, S. variegatus, Wilcoxina mikolae, Tuber sp., Tomentella sp., Cenococcum geophilum, Amphinema byssoides) were distinguished on the roots of pine seedlings as well as one ectomycorrhizal symbiont not identified to species level. In total, 6 mycorrhizal types were found in control soil, 5 in pine litter, and 8 in oak litter. Suilloid (S. luteus and S. variegatus) and Wilcoxina mycorrhizae were dominant on tested seedlings, irrespective of litter addition. Seedlings grown in untreated nursery soil were 34% colonized by W. mikolae, while suilloid mycorrhizae were dominant after litter treatment (81% in pine litter and 63% in oak litter). We may conclude that suilloid mycorrhizae are better adapted to the conditions related to litter addition than W. mikolae.
