Opis:
The article presents the results of the survey on the preferences of disabled people on wheelchairs for selected features of recreation in forests. The study was conducted in 2015, including a sample of 108 people over the age of 18 interviewed simultaneously in the Poland and Czech Republic (52 interviews in Poland, 56 in the Czech Republic). Respondents were questioned both at the premises of the activation organizations as well as activation by email. The questions in the survey were designed to determine the preferences of the respondents in terms of the frequency and duration of the rest in the forests, the size of forest users groups, the choice of means of transport and certain equipment of forest recreation management. The results show that there is quite a lot of differences between the preferences of respondents from both of the analyzed countries. The statistic differences relate mainly to the choice of the means of transport enabling the rest of the forest, the frequency of recreation visits in the forests and the scope of necessary recreational infrastructure in the forests. The results indicate also significant differences in the profile of the respondents. They were associated with the place of residence, time of moving on a wheelchair and the use of a particular type of wheelchair.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine the frequency of horse recreation in the forests and the awareness of threats resulting from this kind of activity for the forest ecosystem. Horse recreational activities were analyzed in terms of gender, age, education, place of residence, and occupational status. The research used an original questionnaire and was conducted in 2016 among 1203 inhabitants of Poland, who were able to ride a horse. During the initial stage, a random selection was used using a layered sample. The population was divided taking into account their place of residence into rural, small towns up to 20 thousand, and cities over 20 thousand inhabitants. At the subsequent selection stage, the number of women and men was proportionally determined. These actions allowed to determine the sample size with the maximum error probability at 0.05. In the next stage, the non−random selection was used, consisting of responding to the respondent’s availability, up to a certain number of respondents in individual groups. Statistical comparisons were carried out using chi−square test. Forest areas are an important place for practicing recreation and horse tourism due to the large space, specific microclimate and a small number of acoustic stimuli, thus creating a friendly environment for the rider and horse. The frequency of horse riding in the forests depends on age and occupational status. The most frequent users of forest horse trails are students and pupils (9.94% of responses ‘very often’ and 12.50% ‘often’), young people up to 30 years old (8.20% of responses ‘very often’ and 12.48% ‘often’). It should be noted that these are people with high ecological awareness, who know the dangers to the forest resulting from the practice of horse riding (8.34%). On the other hand, the least ecological awareness is held by the unemployed (30.77%) and people practicing free profession (48.94%). In order to increase the ecological awareness among tourists and horse riders, it would be necessary to set along the trails signs with information about the risks that horses bring to the forest and how to behave on the designated paths and horse trails.

Opis:
The aim of the work was to show the expectations of the Polish society towards leisure time as well as tourist and recreational activities in the forest environment. We tried to define the reasons for staying in forest environment, indicate the most valuable qualities of forest area and factors that disturb the presence in forest. We indicated the greatest threats to the forest environment and expectations of the population regarding the facilities for using the forest environment for leisure purposes as well as recreational and tourist activities. The diagnostic survey method was used. The questionnaire included 10 closed questions, half of which were used for the purpose of this work. The attitude was measured with a five−point Likert scale after the use of activities related to the construction and validation. The sample consisted of 1068 adult respondents, who were chosen according to the place of residence (village, town up to 30 thousand and over 30 thousand inhabitants), age (up to 25 years, from 26 to 40 years, from 41 to 55 years as well as older than 56), gender and 6 regions of Poland. We applied the analysis of discriminant function in statistical analysis. The classification function was used in the form of calculating coefficients that were determined for each of the created groups. The main goals of stay in forest are group trips, running and cycling, as well as health values of this environment and observation of fauna and flora combined with the collection of forest undergrowth. The main advantages of this environment are healthy and fresh air, and peace. Factors disturbing stay in the forest include its littering and too many visitors, while the biggest threats are forest fires and its excessive exploitation by visitors. It is expected that the infrastructure supporting relaxation in the forest environment will be developing. Polish forest resources through the richness of natural values and with proper supply of tourist and recreational infrastructure can be the main area of creating tourist and recreational products. The education of visitors is expected to improve the perception of forest resources as a place of rest and regeneration of vital forces.

Opis:
The study was designed to determine current recreational value of the state forests in Poland from the viewpoint of their administrator (i.e. the State Forests National Forest Holding) and to compare this findings with the value estimated by other researchers. The research was conducted in 31% of all the forest districts administered by the State Forests. The survey was sent to these units by e−mail. It contained two questions about: (1) what part of the total annual expenditures of the forest district is connected with recreational development and use of forests, and (2) what part of the total annual revenues of the forest district is generated by recreational use of forests. Afterwards, the current recreational value of the State Forests was calculated. Budget related data come from the annual financial and operational statement of the State Forests. The findings show that operations linked with recreational use of forests in majority of the forest districts generate losses and only in some of them measurable financial gains are recorded. Costs linked to recreational use of forests are incurred by nearly all districts (97%), yet in the most cases they account for up to 3% of the total disbursements. Only 25% of the forest districts recorded revenues from this type of operations. The current recreational value of the State Forests in Poland is estimated to circa 8 USD/ha. Notably, this is a mean value for all national forests in Poland, yet not all of them are equally attractive to visitors. The relevant value for only urban and suburban forests equals 94 USD/ha, which is approximately 10% of the estimated value reported by other researchers. It can be assumed that the remaining part of the revenues generated by recreational function of forests represent earnings of local businesses (accommodation, catering, grocery shops, souvenirs, transport and other services). The present findings provide important information for the State Forest administrators and for the public. Forest administrators should seek the possibility to change above mentioned disadvantageous ratio to at least one of 3:7. Given this, a change in the national forest policy would be worth considering; a proposal for such transformation is presented.

Tourism and recreation within Natura 2000 areas are supposed to be an important branch of social activity and source of income for local inhabitants, organisations and self−governments. Because of natural value of forests within Natura 2000 areas, they should be made accessible with care, also especially because they are protected by national protection forms. Both EU and Polish law regulates principles of Natura 2000 areas accessibility. Model of safe tourism (ecotourism) should be promoted to reduce conflicts that arise at the edge of nature protection and utilisation. EU funds will be very helpful to realise that as on one hand they enable to prepare sufficient infrastructure and on the other – they help with promotion of the region.

Opis:
The article presents the results of questionnaire survey, which aimed to determine social preferences in relation to running as a form of active leisure time in the forests. In 2016 the survey covered 346 people over 18 years of age. As a research tool we used an internet questionnaire, which included questions about such issues as: the frequency of running in the forest, the preferred season and the views on advantages and disadvantages of running in forest areas. The questionnaire was distributed via social media (eg Facebook) among people interested in running. Statistical analysis of the impact of personal characteristics (gender, age, place of residence) and experience in running on the respondent preferences was carried out using the chi−square test. Men dominated among the respondents. The majority were people aged 35−44 and urban residents. Over half of the respondents declared that they are doing athletic or recreational running for more than 4 years. Results show that forests in Poland are an attractive place for running. The most preferred season for running in the forest was summer and spring. Most respondents run in the forest several times a week. The most frequently mentioned advantages of running in the forest included: contact with nature, clean air, and landscape – pleasant environment. Subsequently, the respondents pointed to the lack of traffic control infrastructure, and lack or a small number of other recreational people. Among the disadvantages of running in the forest, respondents mentioned mainly: the presence of tick, hunters, and lack of clearly marked and illuminated routes. Other factors limiting the comfort of running in the forests were: uneven road surface or problems with phone connection. The results showed that the preferences varied significantly, mainly in terms of gender, age and experience in running. The age and experience of respondents have an influence on preferences regarding the frequency of running in forests. The preferences of the respondents referring to the advantages and disadvantages of running in the forests are different due to gender, age and number of years of their experience. The analysis of respondents’ preferences leads to the conclusion that for the development of running in forests, promoting the forest as a friendly running place, it is important to have appropriate recreational forest management, including, first of all, proper layout of forest road networks and their markings.

Most respondents in Poland run in the forest several times a week, whereas in the Czech Republic – several times a month. The most frequently mentioned advantages of running in Polish forests were: contact with nature, clean air, landscape – pleasant environment. In Czech forests among the most frequently mentioned advantages of running were: contact with nature, good quality surface and clean air. Subsequently, the respondents pointed to the lack of traffic control infrastructure, and lack or a small number of other recreational people. Among the disadvantages of running in the forest, respondents in both counties mentioned mainly: the presence of tick and hunters. Other factors limiting the comfort of running in the forests included: uneven road surface or problems with phone connection. Only the views on the subject of the attractiveness of the forests for running and disadvantages of running in forest areas were not significantly important.

Opis:
The purpose of the paper was to determine the impact of the most popular form of recreation and tourism (i.e. walking) on the environment in selected forests that were made available by the means of educational trails. The research was carried out in south−eastern Poland, in the forest reserves Bór (RB) and Polanki (RP) as well as in the economic forests of the Kołaczyce (NK) and Brzozów (NB) forest districts. A 1−km−long transect was established on both sides along each educational trail with control points determined every 10 m. In total 200 points were distinguished and data on the degree of soil damage was collected at research plots with an area of 1 m2 each. Based on these 200 plots, damage of young trees and soil were measured. The studies indicate that the damage to the soil and trees in the immediate vicinity of the routes available for recreation and tourism are very large. In all objects, 53−99% of the soil surface and 28−56% of trees were damaged. Slightly damaged soil earned the highest fraction on all studied trails (for NK it was 62%, RB – 49%, RP – 35.5% and NB – 26.5%). The most severe soil damage (packed soil) was recorded in as many as 37% of the measurement points in RB, 9.5% in RP and NB and 7% in NK. The most common form of damage to the trees was bark rub without damaging the pulp or partial damage to the needles or leaves. In case of NK, such damage was observed in 41% of trees, while 30.4% of RB, NB in 20.9% and RP in 13.9%. Trees ranked as the 2 most severe degrees of damage accounted for as much as 9.2% in NK, while 7.2% of RP, 6.4% in RB and 5.6% in NB. The damage level of the examined components of the forest environment determined in the study as a result of tourist and recreational use should be considered as high.
