The paper describes the spatial diversity of 30−year old Douglas fir stands established by planting on fresh mixed coniferous and fresh mixed broadleaved sites. Analysis was carried out with reference to the horizontal structure (type of tree distribution over an area) and the spatial diversity of living trees size (dbh and height). Easily measurable structural indices as Clark−Evan aggregation index, contagion index and the height and diameter differentiation indices were used.

Opis:
Since the beginning of XIX century a considerable number of Douglas fir populations from North America were introduced to many European countries. In France, Douglas fir is still going to increase significantly its participation in growing stock and wood harvest. There are also some countries (e.g. the Netherlands), where the interest in breeding and silviculture of Douglas fir have been decreased in last decades. The data from the European literature was collected to show a current volume stock, growth increment, gene resources and qualified seed sources of Douglas fir in the outlook of the future role of the species in European forest economy. A short outlook on the breeding programs of Douglas fir working out in several European countries was also presented.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the quantitative and valuable potential of wood resources of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in individual regional directorates of the State Forests (RDSFs) in Poland. We used data from the State Forests Information System database (values for the end of 2014) to determine the amount of the resources of the analysed species in forests under the State Forests management. The monetary value of black locust and Douglas fir resources was determined using both the indicator method and on the basis of sales prices of individual assortments. The occurrence, and hence the resources of black locust and Douglas fir in our country are characterized by considerable spatial diversity. Generally speaking, studied tree species are of minor importance in Polish forests as far as area and volume are concerned, but both species can the most often and in the large abundance be found in the western and northern Poland. The average sale price of wood of the tested species varied a lot in individual regional directorates of the State Forests (fig.). In the case of black locust the average sale price ranged from 99 PLN/m3 in RDSF Szczecinek to 151 PLN/m3 in RDSF Krakow, while for Douglas fir the values from 59 PLN/m3 in RDSF Łódź to 277 PLN/m3 in RDSF Katowice were obtained. The total value of black locust timber resources was assessed by the sale price method at PLN 262.4 million, and by the indicator method at PLN 186.4 million. In the case of Douglas fir timber, these values were much higher and amounted to PLN 375.0 and 309.2 million, respectively. The highest value of the studied species stands was noted in the RDSF with the largest amount of their resources.

Opis:
The level of damage to the cell membranes is a sign of aging of the seeds and a decrease in their viability. Conductometric seed testing method indirectly utilizes uncontrolled leakage of ions from seeds with damaged cell membranes to assess their viability. This involves the use of an electrical conductivity of the aqueous solution, in which seeds are soaked. The research was conducted in the years 2011−2014 and aimed at developing the methodology of evaluation of Scots pine and Douglas fir seeds by conductivity test. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between electrolyte leakage and germination capacity of Scots pine and Douglas fir seeds. 402 samples of Scots pine seed and 90 specimens of Douglas fir seed from all over Poland were tested. The research material was both freshly harvested and stored. Scots pine seeds were obtained in the years 2008−2014, while Douglas fir – 2003−2013 as well as ones stored in the refrigerator for 15 years. Conductivity test and standard seed germination procedure of the analyzed species were used. For both Scots pine and Douglas fir, we noted that, as the electrolyte leakage rate increased, the germination capacity of the seed decreased. So we decided to test whether the vitality of the seeds was determined by means of a conductivity test. The best−fit regression model was determined and the mean expected germination capacity in the viability classes was calculated. 95% confidence intervals for the regression function were also determined. Evaluation of the viability of the seeds by means of the conductometric method is especially useful for seeds requiring a long stratification period (e.g. Douglas fir to determine the potential loss of their vitality. Although the ISTA seed evaluation rules do not require conductivity test for evaluating the seeds of Scots pine and Douglas fir, it may be applicable in situations where it is necessary to perform a rapid assessment of viability before spring sowing.

Phytosociological relevés from a natural acidophilous oak forest Calamagrostio−Quercetum, as well as Scots pine, Douglas fir and beech plantations located in the same habitat were analysed. Our investigations did not confirm the negative effect of Scots pine on biodiversity. We observed a decline of species number with the decrease of light availability. The undergrowth biodiversity in the oak forest was reduced by the presence of beech the most. The observed quantitative and qualitative differences among the compared forests resulted from the combined effects of light availability, the character of plant litter, agrotechnical works, as well as dispersal abilities of plant species.

Opis:
The main objective of the research was to evaluate the incremental response of Douglas fir and Scots pine subjected to strong environmental stress to variable thermal and precipitation conditions. We also attempted to determine periods of tree−ring width reduction caused by strong anthropopressure associated with the activities of nearby industrial plants, which are burdensome for the environment. The studied forest stands are located in the Kędzierzyn Forest District, in Kotlarnia forestry (50°27'59'N, 18°38'42'E) approximately 8 km away from the nitrogen production plants. We used standard methodology applied in the dendrochronological studies with the support of the TSAP−Win, Cofecha, Arstan and Quercus 06.01 softwares. We found that Douglas fir and Scots pine stands growing in the permanently damaged zone due to the adverse effects of industry responded to meteorological conditions in a manner typical of the species. In the study of the relationship between weather and growth, thermal and precipitation conditions were more important in the current year than in the year preceding the increment. A similar distribution of reductions and periods of partial regeneration in both species were also observed. In the same multi−annual period of 1961−1991 deeper reductions of annual increments were observed in Douglas fir (>70%) than in Scots pine (in the range of 50−70%). Conditions, in which trees grew in the Kędzierzyn Forest District, contributed to the decrease in annual increments of both Douglas fir and Scots pine, while the previous species turned out to be a more sensitive one, which had been indicated by other researchers ealier.
