Opis:
The paper focuses on the deterministic model of normal forest, the probabilistic model of target forest and the processes related to the survival and mortality of forest stands suitable for these models. They are the basis for the assumptions, presented in this paper, of two different methods of regulating rotation age adequate for normal forest and target forest. Optimizing the rotation age of a stand is essential for the regulation of forest production. It aims to establish such an age−dependent state of stand, which is the most desirable from the point of view of the adopted forest management objectives. Because of the long−term cycle of stand development, optimizing the age at which a stand is considered mature for felling usually means maximizing the average annual increase in stand volume. Under the conditions of normal forest, the concept formulated in the first half of the nineteenth century, the above optimization criterion has the form of the equation [2]. The current annual increase of timber production (Pb (tu)) at the optimal rotationage (tu) is equal to the average annual increment (Pp(tu)). At this age, the intensity (rate) of thecurrent growth of the production function (Pb(tu)/P(tu)) becomes equal to the fractionof the stand area (1/tu). These relationships are illustrated in figure 3. The model of target forest is derived from the random nature of two opposing processes described as 'survival' and 'mortality' of forests. This is reflected in the transition probability matrix where a forest stand moves from the younger age class to the older or to the youngest age class. The probability function (U(t)) of stand survival in individual management periods (t) developed on the basis of these data, is one of the main parameters of the optimization equation for the rotation age of target forest [11]. Formula [13] indicates that the optimal rotation age (t=tu) is when the rate of growth in the volume of merchantable timber (Pb(t)/P(t)) and the negative growth rate (decline) for a part or the entirestand (Ub(t)/U(t)) are equal to a fraction of the stand area. These interactions are illustrated infigure 8, which additionally presents the effect of the decline in the survival rate on the optimal rotation age (tu). This age may be analyzed separately for natural disasters and for clear−cuttingof stands in accordance with the forest management plan. These two categories of effects mayalso be dealt with jointly.

Based on the literature and on own studies, mechanisms of action of different classes of insecticides on target tissue of insects are reviewed. It may be stated that insecticides acted on insect nervous system covered in 1997 about 93,4% pesticide world market and insecticides with non−conventional mechanisms of action – 6,6% only. It seems however that the last group will be the base of plant protection in XXI century.

Opis:
For a given target diameter and selection cutting intensity there is only one existing diameter distribution at which a stand can fully use the productive potential of the site. In typical market situations when the rise in market price of timber, at least to some extent, goes along with the increase of stem diameter, the enlargement of stand volume and target diameter results in the rise in stand value increment. Too heavy or too light cutting intensity brings about the reduction in the value increment of a stand.

The study presents a system of evaluation of stand conversion needs. The system enables stand classification with regard to conversion urgency on the basis of a combination of six stand characteristics selected for their usefulness for such evaluation. These are: maturity for conversion, degree of adjustment of species composition of the regeneration to the habitat conditions, degree of coverage by a stand, degree of coverage by regeneration, degree of healthiness. The silvicultural rules adapted to the specifics in mountain regions are an integral part of the study.

Profitability of the investment related to the leaving of trees of different diameter in a stand was calculated on the basis of present value expressed in money, calculated gross land rent, anticipated end−of−period (EOP) value and knowledge of tree growth rate for an exemplary fir stand. Assuming the break−even point at 1.5% and 3%, a desirable minimum tree increment was established for which leaving of trees in a stand should be considered economically justified. The impact of the assumed level of anticipated profitability on the vertical structure and form of stands managed under the selection and Swiss irregular shelterwood cutting systems was discussed.

Opis:
The structure and productive potential of selection−managed stands in Slovakia are very differentiated. They depend first of all on species composition and soil conditions. On the basis of recent research, including the present study, three groups of selection stands have been distinguished on the basis of their productive potential. Spruce stands managed under selection system with an optimum standing volume of 300−350 m3/hectare and target breast height diameter of 60 cm occur on poor soils (rankers) performing mainly protective functions. The spruce and spruce−fir stands managed under selection system with an optimum standing volume of over 450 m3/hectares and target dbh of 60−70 cm are typical for most of the selection stands in Slovakia. The multi−species selection stands with dominant fir, and fir stands with an optimum volume of 450 m3/hectares and target dbh of 74 cm are characteristic for the orographic Volovské vrchy region.

Opis:
The paper presents determination of the rotation age in Scots pine stands of 1st site index class on the example of Pisz Forest District (northern Poland). The development of quantitative and qualitative changes in the structure of 10 stands, forming a homologous series ranged between 40 and 130 years was the basis for determining their rotation age. Stand maturity for cutting was determined taking into account three variants of production targets considered alternatively. Traditional criteria and financial indicators were adopted to determine the rotation age. The traditional criteria included the absolute yield of a given variant, the average yield of an assortment per hectare and per year and the percentage share of each assortment group in relation to the growing stock of stands. The financial criteria included the assortment value of the considered variants of production targets, the average change in the value of these assortments, the percentage share of each assortment group in relation to the total growing stock and the average price of one cubic meter of the selected assortments groups.

Opis:
Research was carried out in 13 fir stands representing a spectrum of typical Carpathian selection forests. In most of them, no selection cutting was applied except for Krynica I and II stands. The stand volume oscillated between 384 m3/ha and nearly 628 m3/ha. The maximum dbh age of the stands ranged from 100−120 to over 200 years. Dbh distributions attained the form of a J−shaped curve with the highest number of trees in the smallest diameter class, however, none of these curves showed conformance with Liocourt−Meyer's theoretical distribution. From the analysis of the undergrowth, it can be concluded that three stands showed unsatisfactory amount of undergrowth. In general, the intensity of cuts in the majority of sites was high. This is related to the specifics of these stands which, in most cases, have not yet been managed under the selection system.
