Opis:
The current provisions in the EU directive, applicable to the signatories of the document, assume reaching by 2020 a share of at least 20% of energy coming from renewable sources. The EU Parliament demands changes to the current directive on forest biomass and its contribution to the use of renewable energy. The Parliament considers it expedient to increase the amount of forest biomass obtained, including wood in various processing states, treating this solution as one of the active methods of replacing the energy derived from fossil fuels. The definition proposed by the EU Parliament states that countries and industrial plants in their areas can receive financial assistance and also be included in the group of energy users ‘from renewable sources’ if they obtain it from the combustion of wood, which will be collected only for this purpose. Such a case has led to the protest of over 750 scientists from around the world. In a letter sent from researchers to the EU, it was found that only harvested forest biomass coming exclusively from logging residues and wood waste, and not from wood intended for other use, should be taken into account for the purpose. Signatories of the letter warn that this change puts at risk both the global climate goals and maintaining the sustainability of the world’s forests. At the heart of the argument is the conviction of scientists that the defect of the directive is based on such a construction of regulations that will cause actions that cause expansive damage to forests in the world and accelerate the occurring climate change. The proposed solution is to limit the amount of forest biomass obtained only to the part that qualifies according to the directive, for logging residues and wood waste. The real danger, including concerning the stability of forests, is the possibility of overestimating the forest’s production capacity in supplying forest biomass. This claim is not an expression of academic caution. It is a real threat. The history of overestimation of forest potential is as long as the history of human development and in each case ended up with a total degradation of the forest and the lack of resources that forced migration of the population. This threat, both on a global scale and for our country, is high, first of all, because the implementation of energy policy assumptions, just like an agricultural policy, in each case leads to the direct growth of producers’ incomes. They are always higher, as are profits in other economic sectors, from revenue received from forest management. This income asymmetry may stimulate in our country, and in many countries of the world is already stimulating, changes in forest management leading to the reduction of forest biological diversity, as well as the growth of deforestation.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study on biomass volume and annual production of oak stands in the Niepołomicka Forest. The analysis was based on the material collected from 59 circular sample plots where oak accounted for more than 50% of the volume of the tree layer. In the total biomass of the tree layer amounting to about 225.3 t·ha–1, the biomass of the shrub layer (underbrush) is about 2.3 t·ha–1. In the tree layer biomass (about 223 t·ha–1), wood makes up on average 86.4%, bark – 12% and assimilatory apparatus – 1.6%. The share of wood in the biomass increases with the increase of stand age, while that of bark and assimilatory apparatus declines. The proportion of these elements in the dry mass production (on average 9.8 t·ha–1·year–1) is somewhat different. Almost 35% of its volume is assimilatory apparatus whose share increases with stand age. The increment of bark is about 9%, while of wood it is 56% of the annual biomass production of the stands under analysis and slightly decreases with stand age.

Opis:
The empirical material used in the studies took in measurement results. The measurements were carried out on 221 circular plots distributed systematically in an area of about 5826 hectares of stands in the Niepołomicka Forest where pine accounts for more than 50% of volume in the upper tree layer. The mean biomass of these stands is about 173 t·ha–1 of which 80.6% is pine biomass. The biomass volume and increment depend equally on stand age, habitat conditions and, in some age classes, the share of admixture species. The proportion of wood in biomass production markedly declines with stand age while that of the assimilatory apparatus increased.

Opis:
The understory, a layer composed predominantly of shrubs that perform an important phytomeliorative function, has rarely been the subject of research on the productivity and biomass. The aim of this paper was to specify the occurrence of understory aged ≥10 years as well as its species composition and the share of individual species in the biomass in the Niepołomice Forest (S Poland). The analysed features were related to the age and site conditions of the stands. The research material consisted of dry biomass of shrubs growing within circular sample plots spaced 500 m apart from each other. Dead and live (damaged and undamaged) shrubs of dbh<7 cm were cut at a ground level to determine their wet mass and samples were taken to determine the dry mass. The mass of live shrubs was calculated based on empirical formulas. 368 sample plots were set up in total. Shrubs (13 species) were observed on 76.1% of plots. Shrubs were the most common in the stands of II and IV age groups (87% of plots). No shrubs were observed on the plots with stands older than 160 years. The most common species was Frangula alnus (56.8% of the plots). Quite common ones included Sorbus aucuparia (27.7%) and Padus avium (12.8%). Cornus sanguinea, Prunus spinosa, Salix caprea and Viburnum opulus were observed on less than 1% of the sample plots. Frangula alnus and Padus avium were inventoried in as many as 8 forest site types. The largest amount of shrubs (10 species) were observed in moist broadleaved forest stands, while the fewest (2 species) in boggy mixed broadleaved and ash−alder swamp stands. Over 56% of the aboveground biomass were live shrubs of dbh <7 cm (868.6 kg/ha), almost 29% (444.1 kg/ha) were shrubs of the dbh ≥7 cm, and around 15% (227.6 kg/ha) of the biomass were dead shrubs. The total aboveground biomass of shrubs in the understory of the analysed stands equaled, on average, to 1,540 kg/ha. 94% of the biomass was the aboveground woody biomass including bark (1,448 kg/ha). The dry mass of leaves amounted to 92 kg/ha (6%). Due to high variability of the understory biomass, the estimation error of its average amount was almost 11.4% for total biomass and 13.5% for leaves.

Opis:
Number of carabid beetles, length of C. violaceus elytra and MIB of all carabids were studied subsequent to pitfall−trapping in 14 beech stands of increasing age (1−165 years) in Western Germany. The beech stands seemed to offer fairly constant feeding conditions for C. violaceus (and relatively small decrease in rather low level of degradation in the plantation). In total, 5,536 carabid individuals were trapped, which revealed significant increase of MIB (from 156.88 to 733.63 mg) following the logistic growth function. Due to incomplete degradation of the stands (on 'rich' soil and after using specific beech−harvesting techniques), there is a high baseline MIB at t=0 and an early onset of regenerative succession. The curve's gradient is steep and MIB reaches final value of about 650 mg in timber stands. Such high value may be explained by the good quality of loam soils in the area under study. In conclusion, logistic MIB function was calculated that describes regenerative beech succession on 'rich' soil and may help foresters to identify areas of disturbed succession.

Opis:
The paper describes the accuracy of estimation of silver fir stem fresh mass on the basis of volume to weight conversion factor, derived from samples, collected from few different places along the stem. The research material contained 13 sample trees selected from homogenous 70−years old stand, situated in mountainous area of the Beskid Sądecki in Polish part of the Carpathians (S Poland). Volume over the bark of sample trees was calculated with section−wise method and the whole stem fresh biomass was directly weighted. For each sample tree three stem discs were collected at 1/6, 1/2 and 5/6 of tree height, their weight and volume were precisely determined and the biomass conversion factors (equivalent of stem density) were calculated. The assessment of the accuracy of whole fresh stem biomass was conducted according to five variants: for the biomass conversion factors derived from each individual stem disc (lower, middle or upper), from weighted mean density and on the basis of the constructed mixed model, where relative height and diameter were treated as fixed effects and influence of individual trees was included as a random term. The volume of sample fir stems ranged from 0.15 to 2.22 m3, while their fresh biomass varied between 138.1 and 1896.7 kg. Obtained results show that variation of the density was higher within stems than between them (coefficient of variation amounted to 8.4% i 3.3% respectively). The average density increased along stem, from 835.6 kg/m3 for lower part (1/6H) to 986.8 kg/m3 for the upper part (5/6H). Estimating the biomass on the basis of just lower stem disc resulted in the average relative error equal to –5.8%, while for middle stem disc the error was +1.2%, and for upper disc +11.3%. The use of conversion factors derived from weighted average density of all three stem discs resulted in average bias equal to –1,7% with standard error 1,0%. Despite the presence of mean bias of –2.3%, the constructed density model gave the most precise estimation of the stem biomass (standard error 0.7%), which indicates the reasons for its further improvements and usage.

Opis:
The biomass productivity of individual trees at age 14 years was investigated in the experiment with 8 provenances and 186 half−sib families of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). The aim of the study was to develop allometric equations and estimate heritability of tree biomass. We sampled 28 model trees and measured dry mass of their components, including roots (on 14 trees). A decreasing share of aboveground biomass was allocated to stems, and an increasing share to branches and foliage with increasing tree size. Also a decreasing share of total tree biomass was found in roots with increasing tree dimensions. Allometric equations involving diameter at breast height in combination with tree height were developed to model biomass of all components and whole tree. We used those equations to estimate tree biomass on the subset of research area, involving all provenances and 180 half−sib families. Heritability coefficients for tree biomass were the greatest for provenances (0.84), average for families (0.58) and the lowest for individual trees (0.18). However, estimates of family heritability varied by provenance (from 0.18 to 0.74). These findings suggest that the most efficient strategy for improvement of productivity in pedunculate oak would be selection of provenances and families within provenances.
