    Acquiring a knowledge that goes beyond sensual experience (for example, looking through a microscope or telescope) and beyond categories rooted in language, requires a lot of courage, crossing the safe boundaries of the domesticated and designated world.The poetic porte-parole of Wis³awa Szymborska struggles with the experience of crossing these boundaries, which leads to undermining the customary categorisations established in our common language. The author of the paper interprets these poetic transgressions – evoked in the works of the Noble Prize winner – from the linguistic perspective. Namely, she refers them to two concepts of the linguistic categorisation of the world: logical (scientific), originating from Aristotle’s theory, and cognitive, alluding to Immanuel Kant’s philosophy focused on the popular (naïve and culturally determined) image of the world. The paper presents the manner in which devices of artistic expression, such as a metaphor, negation, tautology, gradation, etc., are adopted by the poet to undermine both the popular (stereotypical) qualification of phenomena and scientifically determined category boundaries.

    The aim of this paper is to present the US–THEM opposition (which is important in the study of the linguistic image of the world) in a particular autobiographical statement, that is, in the notes of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska written during the years 1939–1945. After the reconstruction of the image of her family, countrymen, and foreigners captured in the text, one may conclude that the boundaries between the US–THEM categories seem to blur. Thus, the US–THEM status is not constant. It is important to emphasise that the choice of specific markers of foreignness and closeness is strictly related to the author’s value-system. It can be seen from the data that the US comprises a small circle of people, to whom she is bound, and who share similar ways of perceiving the world, and who give her a sense of security. The THEM, on the other hand, are those people with whom the poet is unable to communicate – in the literal and metaphorical sense. The analysis also allow to see the influence of external conditions on the author’s various style choices. The text is strongly marked by subjectivity and reveals emotional and evaluative attitude of the speaking subject towards the reality presented. It is due to the use of such stylistic devices as: emotionally coloured lexicon, metaphors containing evaluating elements, code-switching, interjections, etc.

    The detailed studies conducted in the article are based on the issue of heroic narrative. Heroic narrative is a type of writing concerning serious subjects significant to the Polish identity, cultural context and national history. These notions are implemented in language through linguistic features showing pathos and loftiness, uncommon tragedy, violence and vividness of the presented characters and historical events. The aim of the study was to establish a set of features determining the way heroic narrative is written. These features are mainly implemented by literary works and by texts which are strictly literary, but their author was the direct participant of events which were crucial for a given community. The basis of the article is Oblê¿enie i obrona Saragossy w latach 1808 i 1809, ze wzglêdem szczególniejszym na czynnoœci korpusu polskiego. The text can be classified as fiction because its author, Józef Mroziñski, was not a writer but a soldier (a captain) taking part in the military actions described in the text. The idea of “linguistic picture of the world” has been used in the article. It has allowed showing how a direct participant of the battle interprets the reality through the language, which features of people and things he notices and emphasizes and to what extent the linguistic features he uses are typical of heroic narrative. The main tool of description was the notion of attribution, which is understood as a semantic category covering different kinds of features ascribed to the analysed object. The conducted studies have shown that when talking about heroes and crucial historical events one does not always use the features of heroic narrative typical of literary tradition and Polish culture.     The introduction into contemporary linguistics (the linguistics o f discourse) o f such new terms as discourse picture o f the world and discourse picture o f cortege interactionbroadens the possibilities o f folk-tale discourse studies and simultaneously enriches the research database on national styles. The author reconstructs discourse pictures out ofBelarusian and 1 Ikrainian folk-tales and projects them onto existing models o f current civilizational development (those centered around one o f four key composing elements:dialogue, conflict, parallel existence, and centrism). The methods of reconstructing discourse pictures of the world and interaction together with the methods of analyticalcommenting and projecting help to extend research ffames ffom the functional to the dynamie. This is especially important in the research on folk-tale discourse, as it presentsprototypical texts in the dynamics of permanent change o f content focusing, and thus as truły alive and socially involved.

    The author presents the analysis of a feminist discourse from the perspective of contemporary stylistics. The discourse is treated, according to the M. Foucault’s concept, as a type of communicative practice, institutionally and culturally conditioned. The writer emphasizes that in the description of style, the cultural context and the place of feminist discourse in relation to other varieties of communication have to be considered. A feminist discourse is an open category that is dispersed and expansive, with numerous sub varieties, which decide about its dynamics and multiplicity of styles. The author differentiates between a women’s discourse and a feminist discourse. The indicator of that difference is the attitude of the subject. In a feminist discourse the subject is deeply involved ideologically. The presented description of the style includes: the selection of the expression genres, viewpoints of the subject, the vision of the world, various profiles of a woman and femininity, characteristic range of values (difference, openness, body, maternity, care...), their contextual valorization and the complex of metaphors. In conclusion the author states that the characteristics of a feminine discourse are not linguistic features but the sphere of values, ideology, attitudes and strategies of the subject.

    On the paper the conception of a rhetorical device (RD), suggested in the author's previous publications is being developed. The RD means a deliberate and pragmatically motivated deviation from different varieties of the norm, which is regarded too widely asan onthological category. The onthological typology of the norms and the corresponding typology of RD are constructed on the basis of a fragmentation of the «naive world picture», which is given not by philosophical theory, but is drawn directly from the whole complex of the texts that served as a matter to research (mostly anecdotes, some Russian folk tałes, fantasy and post-modemistic fiction). As a result of the research some particular onthologies and corresponding RD types were pointed out and new terms suggest. Besides the RD classification on the onthological basis the author offers the idea that the most important significance for rhetorics is their operational classification which could disclose the system of principles (mechanisms) of RD construction. This idea is being illustrated by the examples of RD which are organized according to the principles of economy, redundancy and contamination. In addition to what is said above the paper gives a systematical characterization of the elocutive devices inherent to the genre of newspaper anecdotes.
