Opis:
In this paper the author is trying to define the notions of semantics and style more accurately, and to establish a connection between them even though at first glance they are incompatible. Semantics as the study of meaning in linguistic terms according to empirical research into the structure and function of signs in natural languages reveals relations between them and the concepts they designate. Thus, in the context of structure, it explores lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, sentential meaning, and with respect to function descriptive meaning and associative meaning. Associative meaning covers several related types of meaning, dominated by the following three: stylistic, expressive and connota- tive. On this semantic plane style and semantics intersect, and partially overlap. Thus style, as the main generator of these three types of meaning, is directly correlated with semantics. Style and semantics are in a causal relationship: style is the cause (the generator of meaning), semantics the effect (the interpreter of meaning).

The article contains the description of temporal relations in encyclicals of John Paul II. Encyclical is an official letter of pope to his church, which main functions are: propaga- tion, elucidation and interpretation basie truths of faith in doctrinal (theological, morał and social) context. As a genre encyclical is on stylistic boundary. It is an apostolic letter, sermon, and from the other point of view scientific tract conceming on theological and morał aspeets.Genre features of encyclicals, transcendental shape of reality described in these texts, character of religious truths (etemal, universal, and forever topical) have influence on temporal relations in analyzed materials. In encyclicals dominates present tense, not in current meaning - but in omnitemporal meaning.Past and futurę tenses play a secondary part, they assist present tense. In encyclical language exists particular all-transitoriness, permanent present, and con- tinuity of current events.

The aim of the article is to analyse Polish interjections which can express emotions. The study is situated in the central circle of issues that are undertaken to be examined by contemporary linguistics, humanities and science of the mind. They let us realize the existence of some qualities of interjections which have not been analysed with a more penetrating insight or at length so far. The list of the examined lexemes contains 200 items and was made by using Polish dictionary and The National Polish Language Corpus, which is the basis of this analysis. The collected data show that we can express emotions using expressive interjections. The author also made use of lexemes connected with laughing or crying and other forms which are conceptualized in sound or motion domains, as well as impressive interjections. Their meaning can be modified and intensified by prosody and other grammatical processes and is highly dependent on the context.

Marcel Proust
Opis:
The paper discusses - against the background of selected philosophical concepts - two basic problems related to the meaning of subject in the well-known novel by Marcel Proust entitled A la reserche du temps perdu. The first of the analyzed problems is related to the question what the meaning (signifie) of subject is, and the second, formulated in opposition to the postmodemistic standpoint of Gilles Deleuze, to the reasons why the significance (Bedeutsamkeit) of the subject is so intensively exposed in the novel. The subject that can be found in Proust’s masterpiece is considered as an egotic, individual, and stratified entity, whose deepest, spiritual layer ensures identity, and, most probably, exists beyond time. The spiritual subject is distinguished by persistent philosophical pursue of the essential truths of human being, and is also concentrated on the role of the author and art. The profound domain of truth remains hidden as long as we are absorbed by everyday life. It is the specific mental power pertaining to the spiritual subject, i.e. our intelligence, that allows us to reveal that domain. Only the non-mimetic literature, as postulated and realized in Proust’s novel, employing the method of “three-dimensional psychology” relying on intelligence, instead of commonly used “two-dimensional psychology”, can present to the eyes of potential readers, as if through the optical glasses, the essential truths of subjective worlds. The significance of the subject finds its expression not only in the application of the first-person narrative form, in the differentiation between the latent and revealed narrator - the fact that creates an aesthetic impression of surprise, in the monophonic character of the novel related to the structural unity imposed by the latent narrator, but also in the specific poeticity of the novel. Determining the style of Proustian prose, this poeticity evokes the atmosphere of clarity and happiness. The poeticity is achieved by such means of style as metaphors, various cultural references shown through the prism of subjective experience, phrasal complexity, melodiousness, and others.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the problem of describing the meaning of a word as a symbolic entity that is considered in the context of the requirements of modern lexicography. The analysis of the selected family words in terms of the cognitive, narrative and discursive aspects are intended to release the role of words as “node access” to the conceptual framework in accordance with the cognitive approach to semantics. The author also considers which model of the definition could best reflect the appropriate aspects of the word. The results of the contextual analysis included in the discursive frame enrich the cognitive dimension of the definition of the linguistic category. They reveal the existential experience of people, their perception and evaluation, that is, different domains interact in the conceptualization, which lies not so much in a single word, but in its discursive relationships with others

Opis:
The paper discusses the problem o f meaning in architecture and its relation to style. First, Roman Ingarden’s aesthetic theory is referred to. It is concluded that the architectonic object can be considered a valuable realisation in the sphere o f art only if it combines artistic values with so-called “metaphysical qualities”, i.e. symbolic reference to the ultimate reality. This artistic and metaphysical mission o f architecture is fulfilled primarily by the medieval cathedral regarded as “imitation o f the cathedral that is in heaven”. The beauty o f church based on harmonic proportion symbolises God’s perfection. The main part o f the paper is devoted to discussion o f three original architects: Antonio Gaudi, the representative o f modernism, and postmodern deconstructivists: Frank O. Gehry and Daniel Libeskind. The work o f the “divine architect” Antonio Gaudi is considered as a revival o f gothic tradition, embodied in eclectic and highly decorative style, with its characteristic organicist elements. For Gaudi, architecture consists in the following o f natural principles, thus pointing to God as the creator o f nature. Frank O. Gehry, on the other hand, dismantles and reconstructs architectural forms in a new and shocking way, introducing contrast with the environment. His works may be regarded a purely formal game, thus indicating the decline of meaningful culture. They are considered as Baudrillard’s simulacra, pointing only at themselves. The other o f analysed deconstructivists, Daniel Libeskind, reintroduces the idea o f architecture as a domain o f deeper meanings. His best known masterpiece, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, provides the visitors with an opportunity o f symbolic participation in suffering o f Jews, which is the purpose achieved by architectural means. His works are characterized by a lack o f one univocal meaning; and are open to ever new involvement o f the subject, who is to constitute the meaning within their own aesthetic experience, in the discourse between history and the present.

Univerbization is a process of word-formation by which the words of a compound lexeme or of a syntactic construction fuse into a single word/one-word lexeme: that one-word lexeme is called univerbizate (in Czech univerbizát - a result of the process of univerbization), for example: světový rekord (world rekord - compound lexeme) - svěťák (an „univerbizate”); mikrovlnná trouba (microwave oven - compound lexeme) - mikrovlnka (an „univerbizate”). The „univerbizates” are almost derived by suffix from one of the word of compound lexeme (světový - svěťák, mikrovlnný - mikrovlnka). Czech national corpus evidences that there are many „univerbizates” in contemporary Czech texts. We are going to find the „univerbizates” in corpora SYN2000, SYN2005, SYN2006pub that have the same language form and different meaning, but we assume that the meaning of the „univerbizates” with the same language form are connected with one another. The univerbizates can have the same language form like: - other „univerbizates”, for example dvouletka means: a) dvouletá rostlina, for example pupalka dvouletá (evening primrose); b) dvouleté období (two-year/biennial cycle); - other words, that are not called „univerbizates”, for example dopravák a) dopravák (an „univerbizate”) means dopravní policista (traffic policeman, transit cop); b) when dopravák means zaměstnanec ve sféře dopravy („some persone working in the sphere of transportation and traffic”), it is not an „univerbizate”. We are going to deal with process of „univerbization” by which words of various compound lexeme or various syntactic structures fuse into the same one-word lexeme. We will compare frequency of them and stylish characteristics.

Opis:
After painstakingly anatomizing in a previous book (s. DIP) the function verb phrase (FVP) in German and tracking down English combinations which display the morpho syntactical pattern, comply with the lexicosemantic criteria and assume the stylistic features, characteristic of “Funktionsverbgeflige” (FVGs), I resume in the present contribution my relentless quest for lexicomorphological conveyors of FVGs, this time in Romaniana Romance language - and then, in a second stage, try to go with a fine tooth-comb through the semantic and stylistic shifts following in the wake of FVPs as employed by the three languages at issue (German, English and Romanian). The opening section of the paper at hand searches in a first phase through the samples of Romanian FVPs extracted from various sources and assigns them to the aspect subcategories which they most fittingly illustrate: ingressive, punctual, iterative and egressive. In a second phase the analysis focuses on type a-§i ie$i din rábdári FVPs which convey a transition from one state to another and, consequently, admit of a double-barrelled interpretation, i.e. both egressive and ingressive - hence the labels ‘contradiction in terms’ and ‘transitive aspect’ I put forward as indicative of their idiosyncratic behaviour. The third and final phase of my survey is devoted to investigating stylistic synonymy as well as defending such intriguing FVPs as fa ll in love and fa ll out o f love. The approach in the middle section is roughly the same, i.e. descriptive in the beginning, with copious illustration of various semantic shifts (active / reflexive > passive, active > reflexive) as well as of the contrasts and similarities observed when comparing the three languages at issue, and interpretive in the second stage, with the focus on two most challenging cases: the ‘implicit’ passive with a subject acting semantically as a ‘minor performer’; the surprisingly divergent semantics of two at first blush similar FVPs {be thrown into ecstasies and go into ecstasies). The third section investigates the involuntary as well as premeditated decomposition of idiomatic meaning in FVPs, which more often than not is to be held accountable for comic effects. The technique at work here is the superimposition of nonidiomatic meaning on the idiomatic one, which in turn triggers off the reaction phase of the listener/reader confronted when least expected with the real intentions of the speaker/writer. The effects of the interference at issue range from ambiguity through a smack of ridicule - when decomposition is unintentional - to the most sophisticated linguistic humour - when decomposition is premeditated. Since the approach is also a contrastive one, the final conclusions would only naturally relate to the rendering into another language of linguicomedy samples. Unfortunately the translatability of interference-effects-generated linguistic humour has been found to be minimum at best in most cases.
