Artistic communication is a multistep process. Readers’ conversance with Der Steppenwolf, a novel by H. Hesse, realizes at two communication levels. The first one is represented by the surface existentialist world view. The second level is situated deeper. It should include Hesse’s reception of works by F.M. Dostoyevsky, with whom the German writer begins a dialogue. It is obvious that Hesse is much affected by Dostoyevsky’s style in the field of a plot formation, the type of a hero, various techniques and even language peculiarities. Considering of this layer gives an opportunity to notice a conceptual difference among subjects and motives that are at first glance similar. Hence, the effect of original shift and diffraction, or “reflectivity”, arises. The phenomenon forms other communicative strategies and highlights different key points in Der Steppenwolf. The “reflective” subjects are the theme of friendship and contention, venereal passions, play, art and life sense as a whole.

The article is an attempt to analyse the novels The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann in the context of the category of illness. The author undertakes a comparison of the characters suffering from turberculosis: Hans Castorp and Ippolit Terentyev. It is claimed that in both of the works illness acquires the status of a value and opens before the characters a path to self-knowledge. However, while Castorp’s illness develops in comfortable conditions and he finally decides to cease his fascination with death, for the terminally ill Terentyev it is far too late to fight for his life. For this reason, the sacralisation of death is alien to Dostoyevsky’s character. In his case, death can be perceived as the Lacanian Real that interrupts the self-narrative. The noted phenomenon can be attributed to Dostoevsky’s maximalism that urges the Russian novelist to bring the disease to the limits, and take it out of control. Mann, in turn, portrays the disease as a kind of safety valve, keeping the fascination with the dark sides of life in a healthy framework.

The paper focuses on the analysis of F. Dostoyevsky's and V. Nabokov's metanovels as the phenomenon synthesizing all core values of artistic consciousness and the world of a sensitive reader. The examination of Dostoyevsky's and Nabokov's metaprose shows the coexistence of languages and cultural systems characterising both writers. The comparative method of the interpretation is utilised in order to show the unique model of intertextuality in 19th century and modern Russian literature.

The paper deals with the meanings of the name Makar according to Florinsky's metaphysical conception which, with reference to the symbolic representation of simplicity in the oeuvre of Dostoyevsky and its problems of eschatology, make it possible to reveal the universal and cosmological message hidden in the symbolic content of the name. The name Makar as a symbol of the organic unity and the integrity of man's personality is rendered as a biblical universal model of the whole creation of which man is its expression. Man is meant as “God’s temple” which is “holy” i.e. ideal, as ideal is innocent man. Therefore, the name Makar in the oeuvre of Dostoyevsky is meant as the only valid conception of man's life and creativity which corresponds to God's Universe and protects man from further decline and degradation of life and culture because of its extreme measure.

The article The function of a crypto-quotation on the basis of the picture of “Quod est veritas. Christ and Pilate” by M. Ge and “The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor” by F. Dostoyevsky aims at highlighting the relations between the analysed phenomena found both in the picture of Ge and in the legend. It reveals the mutual correspondence between the picture and the legend. To make such comparison possible, the author holds a view that methodological assumptions of the so called art correspondence and semiosphere may become sub-codes, which allow mutual influence and explanation of one sign by the others. Common ground for the two texts (the picture and the legend) may be a dialogue and a mythical approach. From the analysis, the author comes to a conclusion that the crypto-quotation (a hidden quotation) may be perceived as the polyphony of the word and the picture, which, to a certain extent, can be associated with Bakhtin's theory of the polyphony of the word in Dostoyevsky's novels.
