Opis:
The aim of this article is to illustrate some of the mechanisms existing in political discourse which employ emotions and humor as a persuasive means. The study is based on authentic texts produced by Silvio Berlusconi. The importance of emotions and humor in political speech is viewed in the light of changes taking place in public communication due to the development of mass media and Internet, leading to, among others, ever more frequent use of the comical aspect of communication as a method of gaining and maintaining political power. That is why the use of emotions and humor in Berlusconi’s speech is analyzed as a strategic choice and a powerful instrument of political struggle. The article highlights the role of emotions and humor in creating a positive self-image of the politician.

We propose here to analyze from an emotional point of view Charlemagne’s Journey, which is undoubtedly the funniest chanson de geste (except the atypical Audigier). In particular, we will try to see to what extent the irony of the text influences the representation of emotions, and how these influence in turn the reception of the text by the reader.

Taking as a starting point the nowadays evident role of media in the process of forming public opinion, our article focuses on the function performed in it by the title pages of periodicals. The analysis of their iconic and textual message (based on the covers of French magazines concerning the so-called affaire DSK) allows to state that it mainly serves the purpose of building up emotions in the receiver, which eventually is meant to achieve a certain persuasive effect

Bénigne Poissenot was the first author to introduce the theory of tragic tales reception, which was a vastly popular genre by the end of 16th and the beginning of 17th century in France. In the prologue of Nouvelles Histories Tragiques (1586) he emphasizes that the reason of his tales is to move the readers deeply and make them choose to go through a moral transformation and to live virtuous lives. This article’s objective is to investigate what methods and strategies the narrator uses to influence a reader’s emotions and to what extent those emotions help (or not) deliver the moral message, which can be found in his first-person declarations (the introduction and the conclusion of the tale). It is done by examining the fourth novel.

Opis:
The French politician François Fillon, for a long time considered the frontrunner in the French presidential campaign, saw his strong position crumble to the third in most of the polls, after the circulation of rumors against him and his family also known as Penelopegate. Such rumors were at the heart of the 2017 French and American presidential campaigns. In fact, the terms post truth, fake news and alternative facts could be seen as symbols of the current information crisis, i.e. the mistrust felt by many readers regarding the media. The present study sets out to investigate the argumentation used to deconstruct and reconstruct François Fillon’s ethos after dissemination of such rumors on social media. Drawing on the theoretical framework developed by Amossy (2014 et al.) and Maingueneau (2004 et al.) on the analysis of self-presentation and in particular on the concepts of (re)branding and scenography, we analyze the discursive strategies deployed by discussants in face management of the French politician’s image. Our data include two different genres (tweets and posts on newspaper forums) and our findings corroborate Amossy’s research (2014) on strategies used in such face work management as denial of responsibility (sympathy), victimization (empathy) or face threats against the opponents (anger). We have also observed the use of a catastrophic scenario (fear), which was not present in Amossy’s data.

Opis:
With the development of political communication over the Internet, a growing number of the French politicians are posting online their New Year’s Messages, which have been so far a genre of political discourse reserved for the President. These speeches have a similar pattern, which apart from wishes include an evaluation of the passing year and plans for the future. This is so, because the New Year’s Messages have primarily a persuasive function, and serve the purpose of strengthening the addressees’ group identity by reminding them of common values. However, while the President’s speech is strongly ritualized and emotionally balanced – as it is addressed to the whole nation – the online speeches are not subject to certain conventions, which allows the politicians to adjust the tone of their speech to the expectations of their supporters. Therefore a whole range of feelings is applied – from the fear of France falling, to national pride – depending on the political aims which are to be achieved. This article makes an attempt at answering the question in which way these emotions are constructed within the speeches, and which persuasive function they embody. The author adopts the perspective of argument analysis in discourse (Amossy, 2000; Plantin, 2011), which perceives emotions as a rhetoric means (pathos) whose aim is to influence the addressee.

Emotions, both positive and negative, are part of our lives. However, until the 1960s, little attention was paid to the role they played in learning foreign languages. It all changed with the development of humanistic psychology, which focused, among others, on the integration of cognitive and affective teaching. Emotions also accompany encounters of individuals representing two different cultures. Intercultural communication is a complex process, which often involves culture shock, conflicts and various types of interpersonal relations. The aim of this paper is to accentuate the role of emotions in foreign language teaching. We will put forward several proposals concerning affective learning viewed from the perspective of intercultural communication. Finally, we will present the results of the study conducted among learners of Spanish, which illustrates the importance of affective factors in constructing students’ positive attitudes towards language and culture.

Opis:
The arrest, trial, and execution of the anarchist activist Salvador Puig Antich in 1974 were some of the most crucial events in the final years of general Franco’s regime. These facts gave rise to an enormous political mobilisation both in Catalonia and in Europe, and turned Puig Antich into a symbol of anti-Franco resistance within Catalan democratic culture. At the same time, due to both this symbolic status and the traumatic nature of the events, as well as the manifest injustice with which they concluded, the Puig Antich case has been the object of regular commemoration in the media and in diverse forms of cultural production. This makes it particularly interesting for an analysis of the uses of the past in Catalan culture. This article proposes a comparative analysis of three books on Puig Antich’s case that have been published in Catalan over a period of thirty years: La torna de la torna: Salvador Puig Antich i el M.I.L., by the Carlota Tolosa collective (1985), Compte enrere: La història de Salvador Puig Antich (2001), by Francesc Escribano, and Salvador Puig Antich, cas obert: La revisió definitiva del procés (2013), by Jordi Panyella. These three journalistic texts, published at different but highly significant historical moments, allow us to reflect on the rewriting of the Puig Antich case and its meaning for Catalan society, especially with regards to the political and national sentimentality they construct around the relationship of Catalan society with political violence and the trauma of Francoist repression.

This article proposes to explore crises from seemingly different backgrounds and periods (the madness of Charles VI of France and the French Wars of Religion) to demonstrate how these elements were used by authors in order to create emotional narratives in support of the failing monarchy. In the two situations, the French community was constructed as an entity which duty was to support the king. However, the authors use different methods to transmit their messages. While Christine de Pizan and the chroniclers advocate for the building of an integrating, all encompassing community around the love of and for the king, Ronsard’s France is tasked at differentiating the Catholics and the Protestants, in an effort to construct France also as a monarchy loving community, of which the protestants are presented as the enemies.

The article focuses on the French philology students’ skills of interpreting emotions in radio debates. Data analysis was conducted with the use of the interactional approach, discourse analysis and the rhetorical argumentation approach. The aim was to better understand the students’ interpretative actions and especially, their perception of ethos and pathos. The second objective of the study was to conduct a pilot test of the methodology inspired by research on argumentation in discourse in order to analyze persuasive discourse in a foreign language.

The aim of the study is to examine the problems of feminine authors’ narratives being excluded from official archives of memory, as well as emotions. The issues are considered in two different political contexts which, nevertheless, reveal quite similar mechanisms of an organization using hegemonic discourses of power.
