The article compares medieval and Renaissance literary descriptions of the mythic land of eternal bliss and prosperity Cuccagna with pictures and texts of Italian television advertisement of the nineties. The characteristic moments of these descriptions such as, for example, abundance, satisfying sensual needs, celebrating and feasting as well as the evaluation of the described phenomena, in these distant texts of culture, are very similar to each other. Italian television advertisement appears as another contemporary image of the land of bliss Cuccagna.

The article presents the classification of symbolic and conventional gestures used in communication otherwise known as quasi-linguistic gestures. The author classified them into two types i.e. direct gestures and indirect gestures otherwise known as linguistic calques. In the present article the first type is presented in detail with a division into the following subtypes deictic, iconic, symbolic and ideographic-metaphoric. Some examples from Polish and Italian are also provided.

Different philosophers pondered on Proust’s novel, including those who formulated a subtle hypothesis that philosophical thought that emerged from the novel went beyond the passages of philosophical character that could be found in Proust’s work. It is difficult to determine precisely Proust’s approach towards the novel which he, alternately, favors or disdains. A hypothesis has been formulated that In Search of Lost Time shapes the fiction in the style of Shelling’s and Schopenhauer’s philosophy; it is pointed out that the novelist developed a kind of rivalry between him and his second cousin Bergson. Proust received a thorough education in philosophy yet philosophy is only present in his novel in an anecdotal form. The debate that he starts between idealism and philosophical realism in his prose takes the form of a discussion between symbolism and naturalism. The reconstruction of Proust’s philosophical culture leads to the observation that it is, without a doubt, significantly influenced in different ways by two philosophers: Leibniz and Kant. Still, the writer does not admit to being impacted by any particular thinker; therefore, his narrator’s line of thought is constantly changing in such a way that any school of philosophical thought that appears in the novel is present only for a short while.

Opis:
Italian dialects occupy an important position in the history of Italian linguistics and are still present and relevant in the linguistic panorama of modern Italy. The purpose of this article is to outline the linguistic image of Italy by drawing attention to its dialects. Through analysis of the situation after unification in Italy in 1861, the author attempts to mark off functions and roles which dialects used to serve. In the second part of the article she concentrates on the phenomena of nuova dialettalità, or the new perspective and collocation of dialect in the Italian linguistic panorama of the 21st century. This article is a part of a research project dedicated to functions and uses of dialects in the Italian cinematography.

Opis:
The paper aims to present pulp as one of the main genres of contemporary Italian literature. This extreme kind of noir was born in the 1990s and immediately gained popularity among readers and caused controversy amid critics: from high and flattering opinions to complete rejection. The author examines the origin of the genre and the story of its development in Italy. She also describes the distinctive qualities of this kind of literature such as dark topics, eclectic form and mixture of languages. In addition, the paper shows various visions of pulp represented by different groups of authors: a serious and uncompromising or a light and amusing way of depicting the violence, inherited from Quentin Tarantino.

This paper deals with the concept of humbleness in St. Theresa of Lisieux on the basis of her texts. Firstly, the author presents the semic analysis of the adjectives and nouns determining human qualities and attitudes. Based on the analysis, the author determines 3 semantic fields: the field of lack, the field of oblivion and the field of inferiority. Then the author aims to present the unique concept of humbleness according to St. Theresa of Lisieux: observing herself as an imperfect being, wishing to remain so, her joy of being imperfect and perceiving it as a source of good.

The following article discusses one of the most characteristic problems of Italian phonemics concerning two vowels ‘e ’ and ‘o ’. They are either open or closed vowels. This relevant feature depends on the vowel position, accent and the vowel nature. However, with regard to the differences in the pronunciation of ‘e ’ and ‘o’ in two main kinds of language (Rome/Florence and Milan/Turin) “happy medium” rules are suggested. The aim of this paper is to analyse Italian nominal groups containing proper nouns. The article discusses two syntagma types with elliptical structure as well as analogical structures where the common and proper nouns are joined by the preposition “di”. The classification and analysis of nominal groups have been carried out on the basis of the function of the proper noun in the syntagma. Two groups of syntagmas have been distinguished: one with the proper noun functioning as a superordinate constituent and one with the proper noun functioning as a modifier. In the former type (where the proper noun is a superordinate constituent), the common noun functions as a descriptive or restrictive appositive. The syntagmas, where the proper noun functions as a modifier, are of particularly diverse character. In such cases, the possibility to paraphrase them by means of the analysed structures constitutes an additional criterion. Consequently, three syntagma types have been distinguished as represented by the following examples: il progetto Leonardo (which does not allow for an alternative synonymous version, *il progetto di Leonardo), il governo Monti (where the prepositional structure il governo di Monti may be used interchangeably) and un quadro di Rubens (which does not allow for an alternative synonymous version with the ellipsis of the preposition “di” *un quadro Rubens).

The aim of the article is to analyze the motif of the river in the novel Il comandante del fiume by Ubah Cristina Ali Farah, which appears on three planes: the level of the myth, of the representation and of the literary device. The use of the river motif demonstrates its literary potential. Furthermore, the river con- firms that the two cultures involved in postcolonial literature yield a new quality due to the acceptance and inclusion of diversity. It also affirms the writer’s autonomy from both her Somali and Italian roots. Finally, the river is established as an indispensable element for the exposition and understanding of the theme dealt by this Bildungsroman.

The paper describes two main methods of teaching text translation, applied in courses of literary and specialized texts translation for a general public, and in a specialized course of translation for MA advanced students. In both methods the use of Polish language as a mother tongue is considered legitimate not only as a language of translation but also as a main vehicle of communication in the process of acquiring translation skills. This role of the mother tongue is extremely important in defining the translation brief and in the evaluation of target texts. The article provides several examples in order to illustrate and justify this thesis.

The article examines the role of food in shaping the Italian national identity based on the example of Italian football language in the most-read Italian newspaper entitled “La Gazzetta dello Sport” (www.gazzetta. it). At first, the concept of identity is analyzed and then its particular shades in the case of Italy and the attitude of Italians toward food, its importance and widespread occurrence within the entire country will be discussed. In fact, the food is a factor which seems to be a bonding element for all Italians and a means of expressing the current Italian national identity. The author identifies it as the Italian culinary identity. The phenomenon can be observed in such presently existing Italian culinary terms as cioccolatino, brodino, biscotto, spezzatino, mangiarsi un gol and the like that are used in Italian football news.
