Opis:
Polish immigrants in Italy, mostly veterans of the Second World War total c. 1,500 settled in nine centers such as Rome, Arezzo, Florence, Forli, Lecce, Loretto, Milan, Naples, San Sepolcro and Turni. In Rome alone there live c. 300 Polish families. Among the immigrants aged 40-60 there- are c. 60 per cent of blue collar workers and c. 40 per cent of white collar workers. They constitute a single personal parish cared for by Bishop Szczepan Wesoły who is represented by Father Marian Burniak. In Rome the Polish priest says masses and conducts services, preaches and confers in the Polish language at St. Stanislaus’ Church at 15, via Botteghe Oscure. He also meets his flock at the parish hall every Sunday. Personal contacts of the priest and his parishioners take the form of not only visits at home, work or hospital but correspondence as well. Other centres are visited by the Polish priest a few times a year. Apart from advantages of religious nature, labours of the Polish priest in Italy contribute to the Cultivation of the Polish language, culture and customs, and prevent integration of Italian Poles into the local society.

Opis:
The increased migratory movement that we may observe today around the entire world, and especially in Europe, is a great challenge not only for states and international organisations, but also for the Church. The problems of refugees require holistic solutions, which is possible only if the Church cooperates with the authorities of host countries and the countries of refugees’ origin, and with international institutions. However, the Church is primarily obliged to organise special pastoral care for refugees wherever there are followers of Christ among the refugees, as well as to seek new forms of dialogue and cooperation with people professing religions other than Christianity. The problem raised in this study can be encapsulated in the following question: How to organise pastoral care for refugees who have a different cultural and religious background and not to lose our Christian identity and, at the same time, respond in an evangelical way to the evident existential and spiritual needs of refugees? For obvious reasons, the answer to this question has taken the form of a short article. Despite this constraint, the author tries to demonstrate possible solutions to this problem in the context of the pastoral guidelines announced in 2013 by two dicasteries of the Holy See: the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People and the Pontifical Council Cor Unum.

Opis:
The Catholic Church in the Polish territories was already at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries aware of the necessity to be more concerned about the pastoral care among our fellow citizens abroad. It was only in independent Poland that the state and church authorities could handle the issues of emigrants. The most important achievement of the inter-war period in emigrant pastoral care was to transmit the full spiritual authorities over the Polish emigrants to the Primate of Poland. Vice-Chancelleries of the Polish Catholic Mission (PCM) were established in order to provide permanent care for Poles in particular countries in agreement with respective episcopates. Polonia in particular countries differs not only with regard to its number, but also structure and character of pastoral actions. In most countries the pastoral institutes are subordinate to PCM vice-chancellors. In Germany they have a greater autonomy and they are within the ordinary bishop's jurisdiction. They are less independent in Australia and the USA, where there is no superior organisational or managerial structure. Now in Brazil the pastoral care for Poles is associated with the local pastoral care. Everywhere, however, the church law demands on the part of a missionary that his pastoral care be ecclesial in character. The migrants in his charge felt they were members of their diocese and of the universal Church. The posts of Polonia pastoral care do not embrace all Polish emigrants. Because of an immense dispersion of Poles and the lack of Polish priests our emigrants in some countries are cared for by local priests. Polish pastoral posts played a special role in the years of martial law in many big cities of the states of West Europe. They became centres of Poles' life outside their Homeland. They not only sought a pastoral ministry in their mother tongue, but also expected their various needs to be satisfied. The priest himself very often became a mediator with the remaining family in the country, helped in finding and joining their families, transmitted correspondence, and served as a contact point. He participated in job mediation or helped to find a flat, to complete all formalities concerning their departure. He was forced to provide legal counsels and explain the decisions of the lay authorities, translated official letters, organised material aid for the immigrants and, together with them, for their families in the country. In that period the pastoral care in the camps for refugees waiting for political asylum in a foreign country was particular important.

Opis:
The relation of pastoral activity to the ethnic identity of emigrants is a current problem. In order to define the model of this relation the Church takes into consideration two basic criteria: the dignity of a person and the unity of the Church. These criteria are, as it were, two poles orientating the Church's teaching and activity in this matter. Hence, four principles can be drawn according to which the pastoral activity: a. respects and strengthens the ethnic identity of emigrants; b. facilitates the openness of the ethnic groups to other societies; c. supports the Church's integration which contributes to the development of the original identity; d. rejects extreme and nationalistic attitudes, e.g.an artificial uniformism (assimilation), or false particularism. The influence of pastoral care on ethnic identity is a complex and many-levelled process. The following pastoral factors play a decisive role here: a. Catholic religion itself which is a symbiosis of faith and culture (inculturation of faith); b. pastoral ministration which has a certain cultural function in the emigrant environment; c. an ethnic parish which integrates the society of emigrants; d. an ethnic priest who is the leader and spiritual patron of the ethnic fellowship; e. different groups and Church institutions which respectively protect and develop the ethnic identity of emigrants.

W artykule autor scharakteryzował najważniejsze aktualne uwarunkowania polskojęzycznego duszpasterstwa w Niemczech. Do społecznych i kulturowych uwarunkowań należą: sytuacja ekonomiczna, system prawny oraz polityka społeczna docelowego kraju emigracji, status pobytowy emigranta, charakter pracy zawodowej.
The article characterises the most important current conditions of Polish speaking pastoral care in Germany. The social and cultural conditions include: the economic situation, legal system and social policy of the target country of emigration, the emigrant’s residence status and the nature of professional work. In terms of religious and ecclesiastical conditions, the pastoral structures of the German Church, the human resources of the Polish Catholic Mission and the elements of religiousness of Polish emigrants were indicated. In the interest of the development of religious life among the emigrants, traditional forms of pastoral care (Holy Mass, administering of  sacraments, pilgrimages) are maintained and new ones are introduced (theological and pastoral symposia, religious competitions, youth meetings, workshops and further education courses).

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the capital work of many Catholic priestes of various nationalities, who tried to organize the centres of ministry for Polish season workers coming to Denmark. Right from the beginning the ministry was confronted with many problems: the specific character of Polish religiosity, psychological and cultural differences between Poles and Danes, and finally the position of Catholics in Denmark who constitute approx. 0,5% - 1% of the whole population. The first 57 years of ministry were conducted practically without Polish priests, those who were there were leaving after shorter or longer periods. The ministration in Denmark can be divided in 3 periods. I. 1893-1925 a very dynamic period characterized of mass immigration of Polish workers to Denmark, changing from temporary to permanent. The economic, social, religious and linguistic problems had stigmatized not only Poles but also Danes having contacts with them. II. 1925-1950 the period of stagnation. The new generation of Poles already born in Denmark was quickly assimilated, including religion. The older generation was automatically embodied into Danish ministration, and the priests of diverse nationalities were not aware of specific spiritual and religious needs of Polish immigration. III. 1950-1978 the restoration of Polish ministration. First the end of 60s and the beginning of 70s were witnessing the vigorous reemergence of some centres particularly in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense. The pioneer of the postwar ministration is pt. J. Szymaszek, the Rector of the Polish Cathlic Mission in Denmark. He was joined by other 9 Polish priests who are active in 7 centres of Polish ministration and are also gradually integrated in the Danish ministration.

Artykuł opisuje zespół publikacji, tzw. schematyzmów poświęconych polskiemu duszpasterstwu we Francji wydawanych jako „Duszpasterstwo Polskie we Francji” w latach 1939-1992 i przechowywanych we francuskim Archiwum Polskiej Misji Katolickiej.
The article describes a collection of writings, the so-called schemas devoted to the pastoral care for Polish citizens in France published as “Pastoral Care for Polish Citizens in France” in 1939-1992 and stored in the Archive of the Polish Catholic Mission in France. Their aim was to show the general condition of religious life of the Polish community in France: the numbers, data and addresses of Polish clergy throughout the country, along with the division into deaneries. These schemas also contained descriptions of the activities of Polish organizations included in the Polish Catholic Mission in France, as well as seminaries, religious congregations and information about Catholic magazines published by the Polish diaspora. The article presents 19 schemas from the collections of the French Archive of the Polish Catholic Mission, their characteristics, summary of content, and the most important information in them. This publication in a cross-sectional way shows the history of “Pastoral Care for Polish Citizens in France” and the changes that have taken place over the decades among Polish pastoral ministers in this country.

Opis:
The apostolic activity of Redemptorists was resumed in the Polish territories in 1883 aside to national missions, and soon crossed the old Polish frontiers. Pastoral care for the Poles abroad started as early as 1891 from the „most abandoned” Polish workers in Germany, mainly in Westfalia and Nadrenia. Later on there were expeditions further into czarist Russia, as far as Siberia and the Caucuses, reaching the then groups of Poles. The first missionary expedition to the Poles in Germany was organised by Fr Bernard Łubieński who lived in Galicia and took up apostolic tasks in the Prussian partition. He soon realised where the Poles wandered „for bread”. In 1891 Fr Łubieński together with Fr Antoni Jedkie conducted a mission for 1000 Polish workers in Langendreer. After that Fr Bernard preached his famous sermon for Poles in the Redemptorist church in Bochum, the church called „Polish church”. Later on there were further missions and expeditions made by Redemptorists in 1899, 1900, 1901, 1910, and 1931. They travelled from one place to another. The German authorities, including some church authorities, were not very happy to see Polish priests who contributed to support the Polish spirit and thereby made the Germanisation of Poles difficult. In the context of the policy of Germanization, German Redemptorists would send from 1899 onwards their subordinates to the monasteries in Galicia and then in Poland to learn the Polish language. Among them we find Henryk Mann and Paweł Porbadnik. They were devoted to Poles with all their hearts. Polish Redemprists restarted pastoral care among Poles in Germany in 1945. These were prisoners of concentration camps: Jan Szymaszek, Wacław Pilarczyk, and Tadeusz Tybor. They were found by Jan Schultz, the chaplain of the American army, amongst several hundred priests from Dachau, and on 8the June they were introduced to Augsburg Bishop Kumpfmuller. The Bishop established pastoral care for Poles in Augsburg, and Fr. Szymaszek was appointed a parish priest. They worked together for a short period. Fr. Szymaszek still worked in Augsburg, Fr. Tybor went to Dillingen and there, on 2nd June 1946, he died in a car accident. Pilarczyk wandered from a centre to a centre, working were he was sent to work. In 1950 Fr. Szymaszek went to Denmark, and Fr. Pilarczyk to Argentina. The third period, the years from 1972 onwards, when the Redemptorists were employed to work in the Polish Catholic Missions in Germany, first in Landshut (1972), then in Munich (1978), and in Stuttgart (1981). Initially, they worked as priests, and then from 1978 onwards as parish priests and vicars. These missions work for several churches (Munich) or distant centres (up to 100 km): Landshut and Stuttgart. There special action in Germany was the „peregrination” of a cope of the icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa in the Polish centres of pastoral care, preceded by missions or recollections (1979-1981).

Despite various restrictions, Lithuania and Latvia were specific republics on the territory of The Union of Socialistic Soviet Republics. In these republics there was a net of parishes and quasi-normal church organization. During the soviet rules, despite various difficulties resulting from functioning in the country with dominant atheistic ideology, the religious life was one of the domains in which Poles, despite various limitations, could make sue of certain rights and cultivate their religious and national identity. It was one of the most important mechanisms maintaining national awareness and preventing the process of assimilation. It should be noted that in the re-born Soviet Republic a considerable improvement in the possibilities of the development of religious life took place. It was evident mainly in the freedom to express and practice one's faith. For pastoral services, although in limited numbers, priests from Poland were allowed to arrive. Owing to this Catholics of Polish nationality could receive a better spiritual care. During this period the number of Polish seminarians increased, which gave prospect for the improvement in access to pastoral ministry in the fatherland language. The democratic freedom was also used by the faithful to undertake numerous initiatives. They created prayer groups, catholic organizations, religious press began to be published and religious issues were presented in other mass-media. This served to spreading religious truths and religious development of society. Despite the change of conditions, the post-war tendency was retained for greater participation in practices and religious self-identification among Poles than Lithuanians. An important achievement was also coming into direct contacts with Catholics in Poland. Owing to this, apart from the visits of priests, it was also possible to receive religious literature, gain theological education in Vilnius and participate in common undertakings, such as symposia, or other initiatives.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the history of Polonia in Luxembourg in the 20th century. First, the history of the Great Duchy of Luxembourg and its economic development were outlined. Then the emigrations of Polish citizens, their pastoral care, educational and organisational activities were shown. The Polish people in Luxembourg immigrated before the First World War. In the inter-war period there were, respective of the labour market, between several hundred to several thousand Polish citizens. The largest communities of Polish workers were established in the southern part of the Duchy with developed industry, mainly in Esch-sur-Alzette and the surrounding. They were employed in steelworks, mining, building, and chemical industry. Some of them worked in the northern agricultural regions. After the Second World War the Polish people in Luxembourg numbered ca. 1000-2000. Most of the Polish emigrants were Roman-Catholic. Initially, Polish priests provided pastoral care. They came to Polish communities from time to time. From the legal point of view, the territory of Luxembourg was subordinate to the Polish Catholic Mission in Belgium, the Mission established by Polish Primate Cardinal August Hlond (by virtue of the decree of 17th April 1930 in agreement with the Polish Catholic Mission in Paris. Its first rector was Rev. Hilary Majkowski who lived in Esch-sur-Alzette at St. Joseph's church. Due to a great economic crisis the Mission declined in the following year. Pastoral ministry was again provided by the priests from France. From April 1948 the Oblates from the Polish Catholic Mission in Belgium began to work, first occasionally and then regularly, among the Polish people in Luxembourg. Until 1995 they relied on the kind help of the priests from Luxembourg who made the places cult available. St. Henry's church in Luxembourg was given to the Polish community from 1995 onwards. The headquarters of the Polish Catholic Mission were transferred there. In 2005 the Poles could participate in the Polish Holy Masses in three places: Luxembourg (St. Henry's church), Esch-sur-Alzette (the chapel of the Italian Catholic Mission), and Ingeldorf near Diekirch (St. Celsius's church).
