Opis:
The general objective of this study was to research the revitalisation of language tourism (LT) activities in Spain. More specifically, the study aimed at describing the LT phenomenon, analysing the global and Spanish LT market, and examining domestic LT options in Spain. A bibliographic and web search was carried out, in addition to a focus group with a convenience sample of four language tourists, and an in-depth semi-structured interview with one study abroad accommodation provider. Qualitative data were processed using content analysis and SWOT analysis, and were categorised before the triangulation stage. Whereas Spanish inbound and outbound LT markets are quite consolidated, only 17 private companies and 5 public programmes have been identified in the Spanish domestic niche, all of them focusing on English as a foreign language. The private offering is very limited and addressed at very specific segments. As for public programmes, in 2019-2020 they received an estimated funding of 4.7 million euros and were attended by over 9000 individuals. This sector has been scarcely investigated to date and offers an excellent opportunity for proximity travel. A more extensive, diversified offering, supported by better promotion is required. This implies the involvement of all stakeholders, as well as the close cooperation of private suppliers and the public administration, in planning and implementing sustainable policies in Spain.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to determine whether potential tourists consider information about a city’s air quality in their assessment of its tourist attractiveness and how this this information affects their travel decisions. Urban tourism is a common and dynamically developing form of tourism. Cities encourage tourists to visit them with various attractions, cultural, gastronomic and accommodation offerings as well as mass events. At the same time, they are often industrial centres and important transportation hubs, which makes them characterized by a high degree of air pollution. The article presents results of a survey involving 509 respondents from Poland. The data were used to assessment to what extent information about air quality in a given city is relevant for people planning a tourist trip. In addition, the survey provided information about factors that could increase the respondents’ interest in the level of air quality in a city they were planning to visit. Particular attention was paid to the respondents’ health. Many diseases can be the result of air pollution, or can be aggravated by substances contained in smog. Therefore, the authors tried to determine whether people suffering from such illnesses were more likely to pay special attention to air quality in their prospective destinations. The results constitute a significant contribution to the knowledge about the factors affecting demand in urban tourism. They may be relevant for entities responsible for managing cities and promoting tourism products. The article also draws attention to the fact that problems arising from air pollution in cities can affect not only their residents, but also tourists.

Medical tourism is no longer perceived as just a new socio-economic trend. Nowadays, various needs and reasons for travelling for health purposes can be realised in many different forms of tourism – to which the author draws attention by attempting to systematize the terminology of medical tourism. Too often this term is used synonymously with such concepts as health tourism, wellness tourism, and sanatorium tourism.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to assess the condition of the tourism sector in Poland and in the Czech Republic. Statistical data from various institutions operating in the area of travel and tourism were compared. These statistics were supplemented with data contained in industry reports. In addition, official tourism statistics from both countries were also used. The analysis shows that the Polish tourism industry does not fully use the its potential for development and performs worse than Western European countries. The Czech Republic, despite a smaller population, has a higher indicator of infrastructural equipment, which, given the country’s geographical location, is the key determinant of the development potential of the tourism sector. The Polish tourism industry needs to continue investing in its infrastructure, which, given the country’s geographical location and conditions for tourism, is one of the key factors that affect tourism and drive its development. Online promotion and advertising should also be intensified in order to reach potential tourists and show them the full range of tourism services. Poland and the Czech Republic are not generally perceived as very popular tourist destinations, so people’s awareness of their attractiveness for tourism must be raised. The Internet is a particularly well-suited tool for this purpose, as it can, at a relatively low cost, show that countries like Poland and the Czech Republic can also provide services that satisfy the needs of various tourists.

Food consumption is one of the most popular leisure and tourist activities, and is essential when traveling. This article discusses online supermarkets as a food tourism attraction in the context of the pandemic-related crisis, which is increasingly dominated by digital tourism and virtual travel. The study specifically focuses on online cheese tourism. The author analyses the cheese offering of an online supermarket in Spain, consisting of 120 kinds of cheese products. Results reveal the potential of online cheese tourism, predominantly based on quality cheeses. Various types of cheeses are described, with emphasis on their country of origin. The article contributes to the conceptualisation of digital food tourism practices in post-pandemic tourism. Online supermarkets are not only potential tourist attractions but they could also contribute to the growth of specific forms of food tourism, such as cheese tourism. The author argues that virtual experience is a driver of future trends in food tourism.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to collect opinions of Krakow’s tourism entrepreneurs about the impact of the pandemic on their activities and their expectations concerning tools of marketing communication that could facilitate recovery. The respondents were asked to assess the drop in sales of tourism services, their opinions concerning the prospect of a tourist traffic recovery, possible measures that could facilitate the recovery and what they expected the local government to do in this respect. In recent years Kraków has become one of Poland’s most recognisable destinations, benefiting from increasing revenues generated by a systematically growing number of visitors. This growth has even prompted concerns about overtourism in Kraków. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected the entire supply chain in the tourism industry, leaving the city empty of tourists and causing a financial breakdown for many companies. In order to diagnose the scale of the crisis triggered by the pandemic, the authors conducted a CAWI survey of Kraków based tourism entrepreneurs in the middle of March. The development of the epidemic and steps taken to protect the tourism sector from mid-March to the end of June 2020 were used to validate views formulated by the respondent. The results of the survey reveal the level of economic losses anticipated by tourism entrepreneurs and their predicted occurrence over time, opinions about the likely sequence in which particular tourism products in Kraków are going to recover, as well as expectations concerning the tools of marketing communication that could facilitate the recovery.

In this day and age, overtourism has become a burning issue and a considerable challenge to tackle. It will remain on the rise as long as the tourism industry continues to grow. It appears impossible to stop or eliminate. Therefore, it only seems reasonable to adopt proper management strategies. Since no comprehensive solution has been elaborated as of yet, tourist destinations have started to take their own measures in order to handle the issue. The objective of the article is to identify the underlying characteristics of overtourism with regard to the strongly promoted concept of sustainable development of tourism, and to analyze the methods of handling overtourism, following the example of Venice. The issue of excessive tourist traffic in the center of Venice is very well-known. The problem is serious enough to serve as a case study in the context of tourist destination management.

The aim of this article is to present biographical narratives about tourist destinations retained in memories of seniors from the period of their youth, i.e. the 60s, 70s and 80s of the last century. The author’s intention was to retrieve those distant memories during narrative interviews with respondents and use them to reconstruct information about tourist destinations. The respondents were not asked any specific questions about their holiday memories and were allowed to choose what they wanted to recall. The preferences revealed during the interviews resemble contemporary trends. It can therefore be concluded that despite the passage of time and all kinds of changes that have taken place over several decades, tourists are invariably attracted to the same destinations.

Opis:
Tourism is one of the main factors that encourage students to participate in the Erasmus programme, and many Erasmus students are eager to travel while studying abroad. The article highlights an important segment of the Polish tourism market, namely foreign students enrolled in the Erasmus programme. The article aims to identify opportunities for the tourism industry associated with Erasmus students in Poland, taking into account experiences of other countries. The study is based on empirical data obtained from the Polish Tourism Organization and from Erasmus Family in Cordoba, a Spanish travel agency for the period 2015-2018. In addition, the author conducted a literature review, analysed relevant documents, and relied on her own observations. The growing socio-economic benefits of the Erasmus programme for countries participating in the programme stimulate competition between them in an attempt to attract more international students, where success of particular host countries and their educational institutions depends on a number of factors, including those associated with tourism. Significant competitive advantages can be achieved in this respect by combining the efforts of educational institutions and those responsible for tourism policy.

The article describes the methodology and methods of examining the tourist-recreational activity in urban agglomerations, also in the territorial dimension. The authors present maps showing the regional development of the tourist and recreational economy of the Lviv agglomeration taking into account its functional zones. They also provide a justification for selecting existent and prospective tourist-recreational complexes and places of interests (tourist localities) situated within the functional zones of the agglomeration – urban, suburban and peripheral ones. A number of possible tourist activities and services (products) are proposed for functional zones and selected places of interest. The authors argue that tourist-recreational regionalization must be taken into account when implementing administrative-territorial reforms in the Lviv agglomeration. In particular, it is important to create a standard set of spatial units and develop criteria for selecting them that account for the development of urban and suburban tourism in these areas.
