Opis:: The paper presents some features of contemporary international migration from Podlaskie voivodeship on the basis of on statistical data and biographical materials of labour emigrants from that region. The classification of the Central Statistical Office focuses on two main forms of emigration: permanent migration and temporary migration. Biographical materials suggest that integration processes depend on the form of migration. Permanent migration facilitates integration with host society. After the EU accession temporary migration from Poland, as well as from Podlaskie voivodeship, has increased considerably. Main migration directions have changed: emigration to USA has decreased while the number of trips to European countries has increased. Migration stories (both biographies and autobiographies) show the development of migration culture and transnational life style. Increasing number of Polish temporary migrants fosters the creation of new Polish colonies with specific characteristics. This phenomenon is discussed in the framework of the socialization theory of Berger and Luckmann.

Opis:: All European societies have massively intermixed in the course of history. Migrations and wars were not unusual. The stability of the ethnic composition of specific groups is thus a myth. Nationalistic ideologies which present their countries as nation-states most often do not take into consideration the numerous “admixtures” which have come into existence due to migration. Similarly, the idea of cultural “purity” has no sense. Also the idea of an eternal national territory is senseless more often than not. There are nations with the predominance of emigration processes and there are nations with the predominance of immigration processes. There are also nations in diaspora and nations which are entirely composed of immigrants who recently arrived in a given place. The phenomenon of migration has great influence on the characteristics of the nation which it concerns, on its culture, and national consciousness. The perspective on migration processes was at times one of the fundamental elements of a nation’s self-identification.

Opis:: The article aims to present how the classical American western formula is used to build and preserve memory about Silesian history. Jozef Kłyk, one of the most recognizable amateur fi lm makers from the Silesia region, adopted the classical western form to tell stories based on Silesian emigration to Texas in the nineteenth century. He was inspired by Andrzej Brozek’s work: Ślązacy w Teksasie. Relacje o najstarszych osadach polskich w Ameryce (1972) and since late 1970s, together with the local community members of Bojszowy village he has been making films telling the stories of Silesian emigrants and, through these stories, presenting Silesian culture and tradition. Kłyks’ activities exemplify Alison Landsberg’s observations on the crucial role of mass culture in creating memory, which she calls the prosthetic memory – a new form of cultural memory in which mass culture texts act as a prosthesis between an individual and a historical narrative about the past.
