    Opis:
    Issues related to identities and ethno-national identifications are more frequently described and analysed in the context of social dynamics. Researchers dealing with the theme point to the evolution of identities, change in their makeup related to the emergence of a different context of group functioning, and also changes connected with the nature of ethnic relations, from habitual relations to ideological relations. The article concerns the Lemko people’s identity. This is a borderline group of multi-dimensional cultural identity, divided in terms of identity. A number of the Lemko people consider themselves as Ukrainians, others consider the Lemko as a distinct ethnic group, while others see themselves as a Carphatorussian nation along with Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians. The article consists of two main parts. The first part presents basic categories of identity that have been reconstructed on the basis of the research results. The study was carried out in the mid-nineties among representatives of this small east-Slavic community. The second part examines the dynamics of the Lemko identity. The dynamics show variability of its cultural content and a certain evolution of identity constructs created by the Lemko ethnic leaders. The text highlights new developments that emerged in the debate on identity after the Lemko were inscribed as a separate ethnic minority to the Act on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Language of 2005.

    The study is aimed at exploring the relationship between migration, religious affiliation and marriage patterns. Drawing on the examples of three religious groups in the USA, i.e. United Brethren (Moravians), Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) and Unification Church (Moonies) the paper seeks to answer the following questions: What were the consequences of religious migrations for family formation? How did marriage migration fit into religious patterns? What sanctioned options existed for adult migrant not in heterosexual relations? How did religious affiliation interact with national belonging? All groups fell outside the mainstream of religious practice of their day with Utopian visions that related at least somewhat to marriage patterns. All promoted family formation along religious lines and in so doing downplayed other categories of identity such as ethnicity or nationality.

    Sport may seem trivial, but it can reveal much about the absorption of immigrants into the ways of life of the United States in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries. Usually, the first generations of immigrants were uninterested in sport “careers”. It was their American-born sons and grandsons, eager to blend into their native surroundings, who took up these amusements and made them their own; and the more they did so, the more they came to be, and to feel themselves “Americans” of European background rather than transplanted Europeans. Moreover, since success in athletics did not require the advantages of breeding, education, or status enjoyed by the Yankee elite, professional sport frequently offered the descendants of immigrants their first opportunities to succeed and receive acclaim from the wider society. The paper focuses on Stanley Ketchel, the best middleweight boxer and the first Polish-American sports champion. Yet in spite of his undeniable sporting renown, one accolade Ketchel seems never to have won was acceptance as a genuine “ethnic hero” of Polonia.

    The article deals with the phenomenon of Pan-Slavism in the Czech-American community, with emphasis on the 1860s. The Slavic idea played an important role in Czech nationalism throughout the 19th century, and continued to do so even among Czech immigrants in the United States. In the 1860s, Pan-Slavic feelings led to two unsuccessful projects for transmigration of American Czechs to Russia. The article attempts to answer why these plans received so much publicity in the immigrant community, what Czech-Americans thought about them in the context of their national, religious and social structures, and what the reasons for the failure were.

    No study of national identity, race, or ethnicity is complete without a consideration of the literature penned by members of the group in question (descent literature) and of the treatment and image of the group in literature penned by outsiders. This essay examines a recently published book for the light it throws on the Polish experience of World War II, on the plight of Poles displaced after the War, on the immigrant experience, on Polish American ethnicity, and, perhaps even more significantly, for the opportunities of genre which it suggests for future scholarship and creative work on all these topics. The book to which I refer is A Polish Doctor in the Nazi Camps by Barbara Rylko-Bauer.

    In the contemporary world we observe rising importance of festivals and other public events in the process of transmitting ethnic identity and forming a contemporary form of a nation. They gain an especially significant meaning in case of nations the development of which has been disturbed by external political circumstances and a colonial hierarchical order. This paper concerns an all-Buryatic festival "Altagrana", the tenth anniversary of which took place in July 2012. On one hand, the analysis discusses the contents of the on-line program of the festival, and on the other hand, all that has happened in Aginsk on July 21 and 22. The article shows the process of building and strengthening the Buryatic canon of culture, i.e. the standardisation of the culture's elements which constitute the core and emblem of Buryatness: images, symbols, and historical references. In the context of intensive globalization Buryatic cultural identity has to be built by modern means, understandable for all generations. Under such circumstances festivals and similar public events organized and designed by Buryatic elites appear to be an extremely effective tool for forming and strengthening ethnic identity. Thus I have used the term "festival culture" in the title of the text.

    The article discusses the results of empirical studies the aim of which was to demonstrate interactions between local social capital (defined by R. Putnam as norms, values, relationships and trust) and international migration at cultural borderlands. It has been proven that international migration affects the quality and type of social capital present in ethnically diverse communities on the fringes of culture, although the direction of this interaction is not clear.

    Wychodząc od ogólnej definicji transnarodowości Stevena Vertoveca, w artykule posłużono się czterema z sześciu wyszczególnionych przez niego ujęć wskazanego pojęcia. Transnarodowość jako morfologia społeczna, rodzaj świadomości, forma reprodukcji kulturowej oraz (re)konstrukcja „miejsca” lub lokalności – każde z tych znaczeń stało się przyczynkiem do rozważań związanych z zagadnieniami oscylującymi wokół szeroko i różnorodnie pojmowanej kultury
    Starting from the general Steven Vertovec’s definition of transnationalism, this paper uses four out of six of his takes on the mentioned term. Transnationalism as the social morphology, type of consciousness, mode of cultural reproduction and (re)construction of ‘place’ or locality – each of these meanings became a contribution to considerations related to issues oscillating around a broadly and variously understood culture.

    Th e article presents the concept of “economisation of ethnicity” understood as a strategy of taking advantage of cultural resources of ethnic groups in conducting business activities. On the example of the Chinese and Indian communities it explores different ways and patterns of using ethnic cultural and ethnic social capital for the development of own enterprises. Such strategies involve for example: attracting ethnic customers, employing ethnic workers, offering ethnic goods. However, “economisation of ethnicity” means using ethnicity in a non-alienating manner. It includes also efforts of integration with the host society, for example good knowledge of Polish language and culture. The article is based on the official statistical data and results of the qualitative research conducted in years 2014–2017 within the grant project financed by the National Science Centre.

    Opis:
    The article discusses family practices and gender relations in the interethnic couples of Polish women having foreign partners. While the theoretical framework engages with conceptualizations of family practice, binational coupledom, cultural diffusion and gender orders, the mix-methods methodological approach combines cases from three qualitative and thematically-linked research projects on Polish migration across three EU destination countries. We argue that spousal attitudes to gender orders shape the degree of cultural diffusion in interethnic couples formed by Polish women in Western Europe. In addition, we propose that gender orders of the spouses must not align with the ethnic belonging, but rather illuminate the pre-existing preferences for a traditional or egalitarian model. More broadly, we observe that women remain the key agents of sustaining or rejecting the Polish heritage and practices in the everyday life. In other words, the women determine the degree and shape of the intra-family cultural diffusion.

    W artykule podejmuję kwestię stereotypu z perspektywy antropologicznej jako narzędzia danej kultury w naznaczaniu rzeczywistości społecznej, będącego jednocześnie – co nie do końca zostaje uznane przez bardziej socjologiczne teorie stereotypu – wysoce plastycznym, kontekstualnym i zależnym od indywidualnych decyzji aktorów w danym polu władzy. Korzystając z inspirującej teorii stereotypu Zygmunta Benedyktowicza, w celu doprecyzowania wielorakich funkcji stereotypów, przyglądam się w artykule stereotypowi migranta polskiego w Wielkiej Brytanii. Stereotyp Polaków jako zaradnych, obrotnych i ciężko pracujących indywidualistów idzie w parze ze znaczeniowo podobnym, ale o skrajnie odmiennym zabarwieniu etycznym stereotypie Polaków jako nie potrafiących się zorganizować egoistów mających jedynie swój interes na względzie. Aby zrozumieć sens i społeczną funkcję tego stereotypu należy jednak – jak podkreśla Benedyktowicz – patrzeć nie na zawartość stereotypu i kogo on dotyczy, ale przede wszystkim na tego kto go wytwarza.
    In this article I look at stereotypes from an anthropological perspective which differs slightly from a sociological one in recognizing its plasticity, context of use and its dependence on social actors’ reproduction in a given field of power. Using an inspiring and refreshingtheory of stereotypes by Zygmunt Benedyktowicz, in order to decode their various meanings and functions I look at stereotypes around Polish migrants in Great Britain. Two similar in meaning but opposite in ethical valuation stereotypes operate there – one that sees Polish migrants and individualistic, opportunity driven, hardworking economic actors, another that treats them as egoistic, unable to organize and inward looking. In order to understand the meanings and functions of these we need to – as Benedyktowicz reminds us – look not at the content and the addressee of the stereotype but who actually produces them.

    In the context of the contemporary civilizational changes and the cross-roads of modernity and post modernity paradigms, the fluid and unpredictable nature of the post-migrant cultural identities is more visible. The author argues that to understand the mechanism of that specificity requires the evolution of theoretical thought as well as new research methodology on the processes of identity creation, since in comparison with the previous migration waves, the situation of post-migrant generations has significantly changed in the area of politics, ethnicity and group mobilization. The paper shows the most important changes in the domain of ethnicity, creating the background for interpreting ethnic mobilization of post-migrant generations.

    Artykuł stanowi próbę opisania mechanizmów codziennego wyodrębniania Swoich i Obcych w oparciu o źródła prasowe. Sumptem dla prowadzonych rozważań jest dyskurs prasowy ukształtowany wokół spraw sądowych dotyczących zwrotu pozostawionego w Polsce majątku tzw. późnego przesiedleńca Agnes Trawny. Kontekst dla współczesnych wydarzeń i budowanych wokół nich narracji stanowią powojenne losy Mazurów i Warmiaków oraz odpowiednie akty prawne. Zastosowanie analizy dyskursu pozwoliło stwierdzić, że treści artykułów prasowych, które w najogólniejszym oglądzie dotyczą relacji ze sporu prawnego rozwiązywanego przed polskimi sądami, przepełnione są dodatkowymi przekazami dotykającymi skomplikowanych kwestii etniczności i narodowości, tożsamości, swojskości i obcości, polskości i niemieckości. Owe dodatkowe treści są wyrażane nie wprost, i to one właśnie odzwierciedlają, ale i kształtują postawy wobec swoich i obcych. Stosowane przez nadawców i zidentyfikowane w analizowanym materiale ramy konceptualne, synekdochy, struktury pojęciowe, implikatury konwersacyjne należy odróżnić od zwyczajnej dziennikarskiej ignorancji albo celowego wprowadzania w błąd. Jednak wszystkie te zabiegi prowadzą do przedstawienia zniekształconego obrazu zjawiska.
    The article attempts to describe the mechanisms of recognizing Folks and Aliens in everyday life based on press sources. The discourse is formed around the release of court cases relating to the recovery of property left in Poland by so-called late resettler, Agnes Trawny. The context for contemporary events and narrative is built by post-war history ofMazurians and Warmians and relevant legislation. The use of discourse analysis concluded that the content of newspaper articles relating to the legal dispute solved before Polish courts are filled with additional messages about complicated issues of ethnicity and nationality, identity, familiarity and strangeness, Polishness and Germaneness. These additional contents are expressed indirectly; they not only reflect but also shape the attitudes about Folks and Aliens. The conceptual frameworks, synecdoches, notional structures, conversational implicatures, etc. used by broadcasters and identified in the analyzed material must be distinguished from ordinary journalistic ignorance or deliberate deception. However, all these treatments lead to present a distorted picture of the phenomenon.
