The $L^p$ boundedness(1 < p < ∞) of Littlewood-Paley's g-function, Lusin's S function, Littlewood-Paley's $g*_λ$-functions, and the Marcinkiewicz function is well known. In a sense, one can regard the Marcinkiewicz function as a variant of Littlewood-Paley's g-function. In this note, we treat counterparts $μ_{S}^{ϱ}$ and $μ_{λ}^{*,ϱ}$ to S and $g*_λ$. The definition of $μ_{S}^{ϱ}(f)$ is as follows: $μ_{S}^{ϱ}(f)(x) = (ʃ_{|y-x| < t}| 1/t^{ϱ} ʃ_{|z|≤ t} Ω(z)/(|z|^{n-ϱ}) f(y-z) dz|^2 (dydt)/(t^{n+1}) )^{1/2}$, where Ω(x) is a homogeneous function of degree 0 and Lipschitz continuous of order β (0 < β ≤ 1) on the unit sphere $S^{n-1}$, and $ʃ_{S^{n-1}} Ω(x')dσ(x') = 0$. We show that if σ = Reϱ > 0, then $μ_{S}^{ϱ}$ is $L^p$ bounded for max(1,2n/(n+2σ) < p < ∞, and for 0 < ϱ ≤ n/2 and 1 ≤ p ≤ 2n/(n+2ϱ), then $L^p$ boundedness does not hold in general, in contrast to the case of the S function. Similar results hold for $μ_{λ}^{*,ϱ}$. Their boundedness in the Campanato space $ε^{α,p}$ is also considered.

K. Nikodem and the present author proved in [3] a theorem concerning separation by affine functions. Our purpose is to generalize that result for polynomials. As a consequence we obtain two theorems on separation of an n-convex function from an n-concave function by a polynomial of degree at most n and a stability result of Hyers-Ulam type for polynomials.

Let Γ be a closed set in $ℝ^n$ with Lebesgue measure |Γ| = 0. The first aim of the paper is to give a Fourier analytical characterization of Hausdorff dimension of Γ. Let 0 < d < n. If there exist a Borel measure µ with supp µ ⊂ Γ and constants $c_{1} > 0$ and $c_{2} > 0$ such that $c_{1}r^{d} ≤ µ (B(x,r)) ≤ c_{2}r^{d}$ for all 0 < r < 1 and all x ∈ Γ, where B(x,r) is a ball with centre x and radius r, then Γ is called a d-set. The second aim of the paper is to provide a link between the related Lebesgue spaces $L_{p}(Γ)$, 0 < p ≤ ∞, with respect to that measure µ on the hand and the Fourier analytically defined Besov spaces $B^s_{p,q}(ℝ^n)$ (s ∈ ℝ, 0 < p ≤ ∞, 0 < q ≤ ∞) on the other hand.

Moser's Inequality states that there is a constant $C_p$ such that $sup_{a≤1} sup_{f∈B_{p}} ʃ_{0}^{∞} exp[ax^{q}|F(x)|^{q} - x]dx= C_p$ where $B_p$ is the unit ball of $L^p$. Moreover, the value a = 1 is sharp. We observe that $F = K_1$ f where the integral operator $K_1$ has a simple kernel K. We consider the question of for what kernels K(t,x), 0 ≤ t, x < ∞, this result can be extended, and proceed to discuss this when K is non-negative and homogeneous of degree -1. A sufficient condition on K is found for the analogue of Moser's Inequality to hold. An internal constant ψ, the counterpart of the constant a, arises naturally. We give a condition on K that ψ be sharp. Some applications are discussed.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the weights w and v for the weighted norm inequality (0.1) $(ʃ_D [M_φ(f)]^q wdμ)^{1/q} ≤ c(ʃ_{∂D} |f|^p vdν)^{1/p}$ to hold when 1 < p < q < ∞, $σdν = v^{1-p'}dν$ is a doubling weight, and dν is a doubling measure, and give a sufficient condition for (0.1) when 1 < p ≤ q < ∞ without assuming that σ is a doubling weight but with an extra assumption on φ. Another characterization for (0.1) is also provided for 1 < p ≤ q < ∞ and D of the form Y×(0,∞), where Y is a homogeneous space with group structure. These results generalize some known theorems in the case when $M_φ$ is the fractional maximal function in $ℝ^{n+1}_+$, that is, when $M_φ f(x,t) = M_γ f(x,t) = sup_{r>t} 1/(ν(B(x,r))^{1-γ}) ʃ_{B(x,r)} |f|dν$, where $(x,t) ∈ ℝ^{n+1}_+$, 0 < γ < 1, and ν is a doubling measure in $ℝ^n$.

The problem of the existence of extension maps from 0 to ℝ in the setting of the classical ultradifferentiable function spaces has been solved by Petzsche [9] by proving a generalization of the Borel and Mityagin theorems for $C^{∞}$-spaces. We get a Ritt type improvement, i.e. from 0 to sectors of the Riemann surface of the function log for spaces of ultraholomorphic functions, by first establishing a generalization to some nonclassical ultradifferentiable function spaces.

The classical level function construction of Halperin and Lorentz is extended to Lebesgue spaces with general measures. The construction is also carried farther. In particular, the level function is considered as a monotone map on its natural domain, a superspace of $L^p$. These domains are shown to be Banach spaces which, although closely tied to $L^p$ spaces, are not reflexive. A related construction is given which characterizes their dual spaces.
