    Opis:
    In diesem Aufsatz wird die Reflexion von Dependenz‑ und Konstituenz‑Konzeptionen im Umfeld alterer Interpunktionslehren thematisiert. Es wird demonstriert, dass diese Konzeptionen bereits in der antiken Interpunktionslehre angelegt waren, aber auch in neuzeitlichen Beitragen auf unterschiedliche Weisen weiterentwickelt wurden. Auch aus dieser speziellen Perspektive lasst sich die Geschichte der Interpunktionslehre somit als eine Entfaltung und Prazisierung grammatisch‑syntaktischen Denkens begreifen.
    The subject of this study is the reflection of dependency and constituency conceptions in older theories of punctuation. It is shown that these conceptions were already integrated in the ancient theory of punctuation, but they were developed further in different theories of Modern Period. Therefore, even from this specific perspective it is possible to understand the history of punctuation theory as a process of developing and clarifying grammatical and syntactical thinking.

    Opis:
    Man stellt sich vielleicht vor, dass bei der Suche nach einem wissenschaftlichen Thema und nach einer geeigneten wissenschaftlichen Theorie, dies rational motiviert wird und dass weiter die verschiedenen moglichen theoretischen Ansatze miteinander ausgehend von streng wissenschaftlichen Kriterien verglichen werden. In der Tat durften nicht selten mehr oder weniger auserwissenschaftliche Faktoren bei den Entscheidungen eine ausschlaggebende Rolle spielen. Als Beispiel dienen eigene Erfahrungen bei der Wahl zwischen verschiedenen valenztheoretischen Ansatzen.
    One might think that when choosing a linguistic topic for study and an appropriate theoretical approach, the selection would be rationally motivated, following a thorough comparison of the various available approaches based on stringent scientific criteria. In practice it is not unusual for the choice to be crucially influenced by non‑scientific factors. This phenomenon is demonstrated in the present paper drawing on the author’s own experience of choosing between different approaches to valency theory.

    Im Artikel werden polnische Existenzialkonstruktionen untersucht, die den deutschen es gibt‑Sätzen entsprechen. In Betracht werden folgende Schwerpunkte gezogen: die syntaktische Funktion des Pronomens es in den existenzialen es gibt‑Sätzen, die syntaktische Bestimmung der NP in den polnischen Entsprechungen, die satzfinale Position der verfügbaren NP bei der existentialen Lesart in der Informationsstruktur sowie die Kongruenzmarkierungen in den Verneinungsformen der es gibt‑Entsprechungen im Polnischen. Es wird überlegt, welche Möglichkeiten für die Erklärung das DVG‑Modell anbietet und durch welche andere Vorschläge es ergänzt werden kann.
    The paper presents an analysis of the Polish existential constructions equivalent to the German “es gibt” sentences. The focus lies on the following aspects: the syntactic function of the pronoun es in the existential “es gibt” sentences, syntactic determination of the nominal phrase (NP) in the Polish equivalents of the German sentences, the explanation of the sentence‑final position of the NP in the information structure (in case of existential reading), as well as the agreement markers in the Polish equivalents of the “es gibt” sentences with negation. The author of the paper gives consideration to the possible explanations offered by the dependency grammar model and to how these explanations can be supplemented and enhanced by other approaches.

    Opis:
    Ulrich Engel hat mit seinen Publikationen zur deutschen Grammatik, zur Verbvalenz und zur kontrastiven Linguistik große Wirkung auf die internationale germanistische Linguistik ausgeübt. Weniger bekannt ist, dass er mit seinem Werk auch andere linguistische Teildisziplinen beeinflusst hat, die davon bis heute profitieren. Dependenzielle Ansätze spielen bei der maschinellen Syntaxanalyse mittlerweile eine zentrale Rolle, und bei der Entwicklung von Systemen zur maschinellen Übersetzung haben Engels Arbeiten ebenfalls ihre Spur hinterlassen. Der Aufbau von Sprachressourcen in Gestalt von „Baumbanken“ kann auf Engels Grammatikkonzeption zurückgreifen, und auch zur neuerlich florierenden Konstruktionsgrammatik bestehen klare Bezüge. Im Beitrag werden diese weniger bekannten Einwirkungen von Engels Werk in andere Bereiche dargestellt und in ihrer andauernden Aktualität gewürdigt.
    With his publications on German grammar, on verb valency and on contrastive linguistics, Ulrich Engel has had a great impact on international German linguistics. It is less well known that his work has also influenced other sub-disciplines of linguistics, which still benefit from it today. Dependential approaches now play a central role in machine syntax analysis, and Engel’s work has also left its mark on the development of machine translation systems. The development of language resources in the form of “tree banks” can fall back on Engel’s grammar conception, and there are also clear references to the newly flourishing construction grammar. In this article, these lesser-known influences of Engel’s work on other areas are presented and their ongoing relevance is acknowledged.
