    The author of the article attempts to confront reports concerning the history of Hannibal found in classical literature with selected painterly representations created in later times, i.e. between the late Middle Ages/early Renaissance and he end of the 20th century. This extensive issue, making up a part of a board range of problems classified as the reception of antiquity, requires making references to specific motifs from Hannibal’s history. The author of the text focuses on an analysis of six motifs: an oath sworn by Hannibal upon the Carthaginian gods in his childhood, the dramatic march across the Alps, the exposed motif of an elephant, the personal drama of the Carthaginian commander who finds the severed head of his younger brother, Hasdrubal, the dramatic battle of Zama and finally, the scene of Hannibal’s suicide. As a result of the analyses, the author concludes that painting was inspired by antiquity in a non-obvious manner, as it looked for moral examples based on faithfulness to a given word and religious oath. In those cases, Hannibal’s determination and indomitableness provided the chief inspiration.

    The text explores the connections between the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche and Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt regarding past and contemporary culture. The focus here is on both thinkers’ highly negative assessment of modernity as an era which does not match the great past times of European culture, especially the noble civilizations of ancient Greece and the Italian Renaissance. The lamentable state of modernity is seen and analyzed in confrontation with those sublime past epochs, with their ethos of individuality, immorality, violent passions and common ambition for greatness. The article ends with a conclusion that although both thinkers were disappointed with times they lived in, it was Nietzsche who pushed his critique of modernity to the extreme, calling for a radical and imminent breach with the failed history and founding a new one, one which would create place only for an elite group of outstanding individuals, while Burckhardt was much more reserved. Although a pessimist too, he kept a desperate faith in the autotelic value of European culture’s spiritual continuum and did not negate its heritage.

    Opis:
    The  most important source for the research into weaving products are excavated fabrics. By defining its weave, spin direction of the thread, raw materials used or the employed dyestuff the origin of the fabric may be determined, as well as the loom on which it was weft. Iconography is also greatly useful in the reconstruction of weaving work.  The first loom known inRomewas the vertical warp-weighted loom. This loom, despite offering the possibility of weaving very broad fabrics, quickly went out of use inItaly, probably because weaving on it requires earlier preparation, such as weaving the starting border. Also, we do not know any representation of this type of loom in Roman art.   The vertical two-beam loom resembles the warp-weighted loom, with the exception that the row of weights is replaced with a horizontal beam. It is easier to use, as it does not require preliminary work, so weaving can be begun at once.     We also know representations of this loom in Roman art, which facilitate the reconstruction of its use in antiquity. The most interesting issue is the question of familiarity with the horizontal loom. The written sources do not mention it, nor is there any representation in art that we know of, therefore we must rely on what the fabrics themselves present. However, one may venture a claim that the more complicated the pattern, the greater the likelihood of the horizontal loom having been used.   Furthermore, its knowledge might be attested to by the contents of Diocletian’s edict. One cannot underestimate the evidence for the existence of a horizontal loom, yet it should be assumed that it had not been introduced on a wide scale. Consequently, it appears that the Romans made use primarily of vertical looms, with the prevalence, from the turn of of the two-beam loom.

    Ththe Maya, Central America, water, water management, aguadas, chultunes, water lily, ancient civilisations e main task of this paper is to demonstrate how the ancient Maya solved the problem of collecting and storing water, which due to geological and hydrological conditions was in very short supply at a certain period. For this reason, the indigenous population developed a range of methods which enabled them to resolve the problem; for instance, they built reservoirs or utilised natural hollows to increase the capacity of water storage. This study aims to present their major hydrotechnological measures, which permitted normal functioning of a society in the very demanding climatic conditions.

    This paper is devoted to the humour in Plutarch’s speech De Vitando Aere Alieno (That One Ought Not to Borrow). Although the problem raised in this work appears to be serious, Plutarch included humorous elements. Among the ancient Greeks and Romans, not only was usury a grave issue, but also one which gave rise to humour. Plutarch used the tradition of comedy and Cynic-Stoic diatribe in a rhetorical purpose. His aim was to persuade the listener or the reader to adopt a moral attitude towards usury.
