    This article discusses the distribution of paternal property within rural communi-ties in the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, through an analysis of familial inher-itance of a widow from Extremadura. As a source for the study, the author draws on the Cadastre Ledger of the Marquis of Ensenada (1761), kept in the General Archive of Simancas (AGS), capturing changes in the family estate of a country widow (living in the village of Alcuéscar) in the mid-eighteenth century resulting from a transfer of property. Using the method of quantitative analysis developed by the Annales School, the author examines the issue from several standpoints; on the one hand, this enables insights into the increases and reductions in the volume of real estate (urban and rural) and the real estate assets of such women through pur-chases and sales. On the other, the author is also able to analyze and outline the distribution ofa widow’s property during her life and after her death.

    It is quite commonly believed that the modern history of Spain begins with the reign of the Catholic Kings-Isabel I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, whose marriage was the cornerstone of the Castilian-Aragon union. Still, many historians are of the opinion that the notion of Spain in times of the Catholic Kings was purely geographic in nature, therefore Isabel and Ferdinand cannot be called rulers of Spain. My article undertakes polemics with such standpoint, and proves that already in the Spanish Middle Ages one spoke of Spain, moreover, not merely in the geographical sense, but with a historical and religious-cultural community in mind. I also draw on the evidence inherent the fact that Isabel and Ferdinand were called “kings of Spain” by their contemporaries, across Iberian Peninsula and beyond it. When analysing the motives behind concluding union by the two rulers, I demonstrate that for Isabel, Spain of the time was identical with what was Castilian, whereas Ferdinand entertained a genuine vision of Spanish unity, which rose above regional and particular perspectives. In equal measure, this dichotomy determined the shape of the monarchy of the Catholic Kings as well as its internal working, which was far from harmonious. In the conclusion, I point out that that the concept of Spain was most completely manifested in the foreign policy of the monarchy which was essentially steered by Ferdinand.

    The article analyses the manifestations of underlying identity conflicts in the social spaces of Catalonia, chiefly Barcelona, encountered in the streets, on the sidewalks, motorways, buildings, or beaches. The study focuses on elements that made their appearance after the illegal Catalan independence referendum of October 1st, 2017. Relying on participant observation, the author shows Catalan public space as a domain of semantic and polysemous game, in which struggle for freedom and free speech is the core element.

    The article addresses the efforts of Spaniards and Poles to give a shape to collective memory associated with the period of dictatorships. One of the upshots of these actions is the Spanish memory bill (Ley de Memoria Histórica) and two Polish acts which invalidate verdicts passed against persons persecuted for being involved in the struggle for independent existence of the Polish State and the Act on veterans and persons who fell victim to wartime and post-war repressions. From the text of the Spanish bill one might infer that it does away with Spain of one predominating official memory which eulogized Franco, and replaces it with another one – a memory which is an elegy to Franco’s victims. In Poland, the bills draw on the tradition of independence movements, so as to convince the populace of the will to make amends and to render justice to the aggrieved.

    In this paper, the author undertakes a critical analysis of the findings relat-ing to the life and reign of Charles V, contained in the monarch’s biography by the English historian Henry Kamen. Particular attention is paid here to those elements of biographical narrative in which Kamen does not go beyond the established interpretive canon (as in the case of the imperial election of 1519 and rivalry with Francis I), those which go against predominant views (e.g. the question of the Reformation or Charles’ relationship with his mother), as well as the most controversial assertions (American policy, for instance). The chief intention of the author, who confronts the findings and the opinions expressed by Kamen with the interpretations of other researchers, is to address and fill some of the gaps in the Polish discourse concerning Charles V, where the es-tablished stereotypes surrounding the emperor continue to the iterated.
